Utica College 2010-11

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Looks like the game was closer than the score indicates, but whatever....

My apologies to EC;they are back in the saddle, apparently.(Looking forward to seeing them in Utica, though.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Yes, as always my good friend Prez is right, and Elmira's 9-5-3 record will lower UC's SOS some more this weekend. :p (Not that there is anything wrong with that..:D )

Once teams start playing an all conference schedule, everybody's OWP regresses towards 0.500 - It's a mathematical fact because those league teams that you've already played, play each other and one wins and the other loses, and before you play. That's just the way it is.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I don't think the game was closer than the score indicated. Utica didn't look like a top ten team and I have no idea how they beat Manhattanville. The only thing that impressed me was their second goalie who kept the score from being 7 or 8 to 1.

We played much better against them. Sorry that you have the impression Utica sucks, because they have been pretty impressive in the games I have seen. The truth clearly is somewhere between your impressions of UC and the impressions of Pioneers#1. As far as goal tending goes, just the opposite happened in the first game. Smith got the start and Therrien finished the game.

I'm guessing you guys wish you had taken Thanksgiving break off instead of going to the Skidmore Invitational. I am guessing that really hurt EC in the rankings. Other than that, I don't see why they aren't ranked let alone not getting votes.

That weekend might have been one of the worst weekends in recent Elmira hockey history.

I wasn't there, and I've spoken with no one else who attended...

Having said that, being outshot 40-38 while serving 7 penalties v. 4 doesn't smack of being dominated.I fully realize that SOG totals can be deceiving, but they are a fairly good yardstick of territorial advantage,as a general rule.

I wouldn't be surprised if EC generated better shots, but I also have to wonder if 'tending was the difference,as it so often is.Thierren is wont to give up juicy rebounds;Smitty, not so much.

Whatever;UC will host Elmira in a few weeks,in front of a crowd of 3,000+,and things might well be different then.(Or not.)

In any case, thanks for stopping by our humble little thread!

:D

Down to the nitty gritty...all conference games remain. Utica needs two wins this weekend and they'll be in great shape. Such a young team, Coffman a Jr leads in scoring, the next ten or twelve scorers are all frosh and a couple of sophs. I like the future of this team. My D1 team is having such a bad season I'll be there Fri night. Even the goalies are frosh. Go Pios !!!

Fewer than 3 points at home this weekend will be a disappointment, but it could happen. This team has the talent to get to the NCAA's this year, but I agree with the above that the next couple of years could be really special...(But only if the team stays together, which has been an issue for years and years at Utica.)

Golly gosh,I guess I'm just a little *touchy* about the issue of transfers, since UC has lost so many talented underclassmen to that over recent years. My bad.

(But if Heenan keeps this Freshman class together, watch out..!)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Fish a question....Do alot of players transfer out of UC ??? I didn't know that. There are very few Jrs and Seniors on the team, sixteen frosh. If so, what do you think the reason is ??

Probably a lot of reasons. #1, by a long shot, is the sheer cost of Utica College. It ain't a cheap school by any means. Also playing roles in the process are things like location, distance from home, ice time, or relationship with the coach. (Coach Heenan has a reputation in some, but not all, circles as being a "hard-***" and "nutcase". My general understanding, albeit based only on heresay, is that Heenan can at times have a tendency to run practices and such much like a drill sergeant at boot camp).

But above all, cost and ice time would very likely be the top 2 concerns, just like any other school.

What he said,basically.

Though, from what I've heard,in seasons past the problem has much more often been about "interpersonal relationships" than it was about money issues...And the fact is that UC has certainly lost a lot of productive/promising players early over the past 5 years or so.

Happily,no murmurs of discord to be heard this year.Winning helps a lot,but Gary's demeanor on the bench is much more mature these days, too.I think the program has turned a corner.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

#8 Ranking...Is this the highest ever ?? I think they deserve it !
