USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

I believe Mr. KRACH, Miss Pairwise, Mrs. RPI and "LakersFan Rutter" would agree that the answer should be "zero". But, despite all of our shortcomings and varying degrees of bias, we humans can be a little more forgiving. ;)

Speak for yourself. It's North Dakota.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

1) Minnesota
2) Wisconsin
3) North Dakota
4) Clarkson
5) Harvard
6) Cornell
7) Boston College
8) Robert Morris
9) Quinnipiac
10) Mercyhurst

The gap between #3 and #6 is infinitesimal. I'm trying to decide whether BC has put it together and figured out how to play like the team we thought they were going to be they're winning but UNH seemed to give them some trouble.

Take note you Easterners...your conferences are beginning to require way too much thought when attempting to rank.

We've been doing the same thing all year! haha

but UNH seemed to give them some trouble.
True, though keep in mind that BC has won its last 4 games without Haley Skarupa playing. The BC fans I know were just going to be thrilled to get out of Durham with any win as that place has been horrible to us over the years.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

This is getting messy... I did a lot of shuffling in the 3-6 range this week over my own selections last week.

1) Minnesota
2) Wisconsin
3) Harvard
4t) Clarkson
4t) North Dakota
6) Cornell
7) Boston College
8) Robert Morris
9) Quinnipiac
10) Mercyhurst

Dropped out: Boston University

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Once you get past the 1-2 spot things get very interesting in the 3-8 placings. The teams in 9 and 10 are not in consideration (IMHO anyways) for the top 8 at the moment. The divide lines are between 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 8 and 9

1 - Minnesota (1).....W,W.......Winning two games they are expected to win.
==========================================================================
2 - Wisconsin (2).....W,W........Winning two games they are expected to win.
==========================================================================
3 - Clarkson (4).......W,W.......Big win over Cornell, moves them up to the three spot. They are hot.
4 - BC (6)..............W,W.......Keep moving on up, 2 solid wins
5 - UND (3)............T,W........Dropping a point in two games they are expected to win.
6 - Harvard (7)........W,W......Winning two games they are expected to win.
7 - Cornell 5)...........W,L........Recent losses to Harvard and Clarkson has them below those two now.
8 - RMU (8).............W,L........Split with MU
==========================================================================
9 - Quinnipiac (9).................Did not play.
10 - NU (NR)...........W,W......NU looks to be on their way to second in Hockey East.

Only other team under consideration is MU.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Tony -- can you enlighten the masses as to what funky algorithm you used to come up with this gem? :rolleyes: :p

I used the same Funky algorithm. Right now they are clearly the second best team in HE AND on a four game winning streak. Since the break they have played four games against top 10 teams and only lost twice overall.

It all depends how much consideration you give to their whole body of work over the course of the entire season vs. their most recent results, i.e. who you believe to be the stronger team(s) today. I try to give consideration to both, but tend to place a little more weight on recent results. However in so doing I found this week to be perhaps the most difficult of the season, all the way from No. 3 to No. 8. Maybe if I was smarter and remembered how to do algorithms I wouldn't be so confused! :confused: ;)

It is great to see this fluidity from week to week and the tight race for the "right" spots in the bracket. Makes for good fodder for discussion. I face the same challenge from 3-8. You can make good arguments for many different orders in that cluster.

Don't fall victim to the Index checker math. It is both lazyness and boring. Use the math numbers as a guide, not as the gospel. There is a reason they play the game on the ice.

I declare this thread a GREAT SUCCESS!

As for NU -- it was either NU or Mercyhurst. NU got the edge because of their recent body of work and the fact that they've been putting up really good results despite playing with 1.5 F, 1 D, and no goalies.

BU are having a horrible month, but I like them more than Mercyhurst to come good. Also under consideration: Northeastern, Mercyhurst.

you must be calculating the Pokechecker Index, although I'd add an additional break between Harvard/the University of Northwestern Minnesota and Cornell/Clarkson

1) 1-1-1-1=4 Minnesota
====================
2) 2-2-2-2=8 Wisconsin
===================
3) 4-4-4-3=15 Harvard
4) 3-3-3.5-6.5=16 Northwestern Minnesota
=====================
5) 5-5-6-4=20 Cornell
6) 6-6-4.5-5=22 Clarkson
=====================
7) 7-7-8-6.5=28.5 Robert Morris
8) 8-8-7-8=31 Boston College
========================
9) 10-9-9-9.5=37.5 Quinnipiac
10) 11-10-10-9.5=40.5 Mercyhurst
11) 9-12-12-12.5=45.5 Minnesota Duluth
12) 12-11-12-11.5=46.5 Boston University

In your math method the natural separation between each placing is 4 points, so unless the point delta is more than 4 there should be no extra separation line. If applied it would remove three of the lines in the above order.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

In your math method the natural separation between each placing is 4 points, so if the point delta is less than 4 points, the ranking is inconslusive and the teams should be considered at an equal rank.

glad to see that somebody understands

you aren't as stupid as your posts would lead me to believe

... oh, wait a minute, you really don't understand, but it's not your fault, it's your inferior Canadian education
