If you know anything about George Harrsion beyond just his time in The Beatles you'll understand why this performance from a tribute concert in his honor so perfectly encapsulates first George the man, then George the friend and finally George the artist. Brings a smile and a tear, and not to mention Billy Preston kills it.

You got that right. My god that whole album. Also: no rehearsal. What you are hearing is those guys' first look at the melodies. They are working it out as they record. They did multiple takes but all in one day.
The little meandering modal intro on So What that opens the album, where the bass and piano are just wandering down a stair, is one of my favorite phrases of all time.
To put that album in perspective, Bill Evans, who is one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, is only the 4th best musician on that album. I am going to go listen to it now.

Went to see a Steely Dan tribute band ("Hey Nineteen") at the Met in beautiful Pawtucket RI the other night. I'd forgotten what an incredible catalogue of music they had! Fagen and the late Walter Becker were interesting cats (beatnik reference is purposeful).
