And Slap, I listened to Feel Good Ghosts by Cloud Cult. Hadn't listened in so long, but a good majority of the songs were something I needed to hear this morning.

I listened to Back and Forth by Aaliyah last night. An underrated party jam from the 90s.

And I noticed R Kelly was executive producer on that entire album, which might explain tracks like "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number."

I found "Ohio" by Over The Rhine at a used music store a few days ago. I've listened to it before, but today, the themes of loss, pain, regret, and wanting to go home again hit hard.

Was recently thinking about how much the Blind Melon song "No Rain" perfectly aligns with my grandfather's current life. With my grandmother committed to memory care for the last couple of years, and most of their friends now dead or having fallen out of contact, he has basically no one left, very little common interests with the rest of the family, and the resulting depression and struggle to cope with the reality of living his last years alone is very easy to see.

Some of you may or may not recall that one of my faves is Scottish folk/jazz/blues what have you guy John Martyn. His album One World was recorded at island Records boss Chriss Blackwell's country estate, on the edge of an old rock quarry that was now a lake. They set Martyn up in one of the guest cabins, ran his guitar out through several different amps, and a multitude of effects pedals, all running abck to the control panel where they could pick and choose which sound they wanted for the final mix.

One song, Small Hours, they mic'd up the surrounding lake, and then blasted Martyn's playing out over a huge PA system, and recorded that. So you hear the lapping waves of the lake, geese flying overhead, and late in the track, the sound of the early morning ciommuter train whooshing by from right to left across the speakers.

A few weeks ago, I came across this Robert Smith cover of that song. It's amazing.

And if, after that, you care to hear the original, you can find it here.

And this was my most wanted release from Record Store day this year, first release on vinyl, his album of covers The Church With One Bell. This one's a Portishead tune.
