Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

Not sure how to take this

Neither was I.

Shocked the f-ck outta me to realize that their music is, in Twain's words about Wagner, "better than it sounds." There's a reason it took them months to get one track done. Becker and Fagen were as demanding, talented, and rigorous as Fripp or Zappa. They did everything those guys did -- they're basically doing higher mathematics -- and, on top of that, it's a hit that Flyover housewives like.

How many geniuses also sell? Without compromising?

If you can't listen to Aja, and at least recognize the craftsmanship behind that record, there's something very wrong with you. I mean, I bought the thing when I was 16, and my taste in music was pretty much mediocre, and even then I recognized just how great that album was. Fit in real well with my Kiss, Kansas, BOC and Steve Miller records.

Yes, it's smooth, and mellow, and perhaps soft jazz even. But it's a work of art, done by true craftsmen. And it's beautiful. Watch the Classic Albums doc on it, if you haven't already.

And the drum solo in the title track may be the best drum solo ever. And don't give me that Neal Peart crap.

Kep, have you heard Kid Charlemagne? "is there gas in the ca-aar? Yes, there's gas in the ca-aar!!""

I went from age 14 to age 44 thinking Aja specifically and Steely Dan generally was elevator music. Technically proficient of course but inane and dismiss-able. I didn't tweak to it, or them, until way, way later than I should have, in large part because of a dogged insistence that popular equals crap.

Something I learned, albeit late in life: just cuz everybody believes something doesn't make it wrong.

I went through a Steely Dan phase, but after awhile I realized that even craftsmanship can be boring. Peg is probably the only song from Aja I don't have to be in a mood for to not turn off unless I'm blazed.

Opinions vary.

You're not as tall as I thought you'd be".

Gurbled from a booster seat.

rufus I can confidently say my musical tastes are extremely varied and I don't begrudge what others do or don't enjoy. Steely Dan is simply uninspiring to my ears. Que sera, sera.

"Gosh, I've never heard that."

The line is actually "You know, for that line of work I thought you'd be bigger."

Contrast with The Big Sleep:

"You're not very tall."

"Well, I try to be."

Alternating between praise and worship and the Wu-Tang Clan today. A bit weird to go from "In Christ Alone" to "Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothing to **** with."

Wow. Normally I'd say all your taste is in your mouth but from what I've read about your eating preferences that can't be true :)

Here is a newer Fagen song, once again the band behind him is excellent, Wayne Krantz on guitar. Maybe You have heard it, maybe not

Nice. Much more Bluesy than Jazzy. Still has that easy listening vibe but underneath it's so solid and interesting. Though, put some more work into lyrics there, Don.

An easy band to dismiss, like the Beach Boys. Way, way, more than first glance.

Fagens Best solo CD is his first Nightfly, its great from start to finish. His 2nd one is one Becker produced, Kamikriad. The sound quality is off the charts.Like Aja, took forever from start to finish.

Painting bathroom, started out listening to Alice Cooper Killer, awesome CD and finished with Dwight Yoakam Live CD, little rockabilly, good stuff also

Picked up a used vinyl copy of that last year, as it wasn't a huge priority for me when it came out, as yes, the last Dan album and this were rather on the sleepy mellow sideSurprised me as to how many of the songs I had already heard on the radio. All but 1 or 2.

cc to Slap Shot... I downloaded all of Soccer Mommy's stuff this morning. Clean, Collection, For Young Hearts, and Color Theory. Apparently that was more important than writing an overdue paper and starting on the next one.
