Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

You can say that we all should be socialists or there is no God and get away with it. Say that someone is a better drummer than Peart and the Rush Mafia will be asphyxiating you with cut off body parts. Run. Run very fast. It won't help but at least the rest of us won't get spattered on by the blood. :D

All true but did you hear him?

Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

In the NHL thread I linked to a collaborative song by Foo Fighters and noted that most of the artists that contributed I could not name. So there's an alternative video that shows who each artist is as the song progresses.

Anyway one the acts that participated is a band called Bastille. So I searched them on YT and found they have 2.2m subscribers, and a video from 2012 called 'Pompeii" with 560 freaking millions views? I swear I've never heard the song before. I did the same for every artist I knew I could not name at least 1 song. Man I'm getting old. :p

^Hailee Steinfeld

*recognized before
#recognized a song or two after searching
&recognized only because they participated as judge/coach on Songland or The Voice
^no freaking idea
That one is perhaps more famous for her acting roles.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

Dr. Mrs. and her drunky drunk friends are currently doing some Facebook thing where they give the 10 albums that most influenced their taste in music. It's an interesting question because you are supposed to list them based on your whole life; so for example if you really loved that Bee Gees album when you were 16 but grew out of it eventually, be honest and include it.

Mine (in order of age at which I was first influenced):

Quadrophenia, The Who
Animals, Pink Floyd
Teenage Head, Flamin' Groovies
One Nation under a Groove, Funkadelic
Entertainment, Gang of Four
Remain in Light, Talking Heads
The Clash, The Clash
We're Only in It for the Money, Frank Zappa
Discipline, King Crimson
OK Computer, Radiohead

To go top 10, even top 20, it's tough. Depends on the mood of that day, or your stage of life...one prob has a top 50 overall, no ranking, just 50 NEED albums.....

Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

I cannot be constrained to 10. My tastes have evolved well beyond these and nothing below is from music I learned to love from high school forward, but I think this summarizes the foundation.

Styx – The Grand Illusion
Boston - Boston
Rush – 2112
The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East
Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Street Survivors

Van Halen - Van Halen
Led Zeppelin - IV
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Cheap Trick - Dream Police
KISS - Destroyer
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
Van Morrison – Astral Weeks
Prince - Controversy

R.E.M. – Reckoning
The Cure - Pornography
Midnight Oil - Red Sails in the Sunset
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Suburbs - Love Is The Law
The Replacements - Let It Be
The Clash - London Calling
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
U2 - October
The Police - Regatta de Blanc

Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

Live at Budokan was my final cut to get to 10.

That one came to mind as well, but Dream Police was in my first Columbia catalog set. :)

I slightly redid my list - I tried to keep it to my earliest years which omits a lot of very influential music as I got older. A lot of artists that I love dearly didn't make the list - especially some of the more obscure acts.

I think mine might have had it too! I'm not joking! Along with Breakfast in America and probably some Kansas album. And ELO!

Oh god, the feels.

I am almost positive Breakfast in America was in mine too along with Little River Band, Boston and Yes. :)

Mine definitely had Boston.

At 16 I hadn't found Yes yet. A toast to you.

I'll give myself credit: no Frampton Comes Alive and no Eagles. Not even once.

My dad gave me Dark Side of the Moon and Frampton Comes Alive as presents for Christmas of '76. I still have one of them.

I'll be honest, I think the absence of Columbia House and BMG and whatever other "clubs" there were for music is a real loss for today's generation. They've got their streaming services and whatever else, but I thought those clubs were fun.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: We All Have A Crush On Shirley Manson

Had a bad youth.

Boston's first album
Elton John- Captain fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
Kiss-Alive
Kansas- Point of Know Return
King Crimson-Discipline
The Clash-London Calling
Elvis Costello-Armed Forces
The Replacements- Let it be
The Waterboys-A Pagan Place
Blue Rodeo- Nowhere to Here

Bonus
Wilco- Being There

I got armed Forces while still in HS, and London Calling during my freshman year of college, but the one album that marked my transition from my high school of mostly Journey/Styx/Foreignor/Kansas/ BOC/Steve Miller/Kiss vein of classic rock was that King Crimson album. Saw them on an ABC network alternative to SNL called Fridays(where I first saw Michael Richards, also) and never been the same since.
