Would have been sweet to be at the Hollywood Bowl last night for Willie Nelson's birthday party. More than a few one-ounce doobies passed around, I'm sure.

Stumbled upon Dream Wife on Spotify. They're somewhat of a cross between Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Runaways. I'm digging it so far and they have some very solid songs across at least 3 different albums so far.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World

2011 Scorsese documentary. Obviously about Harrison which for many fans was their favorite Beatle. I haven't seen it since the year it came out and I'm really glad I watched it again. Yes it meant a bit more Phil Specter air time, but it also meant more Billy Preston which can never be wrong. Wonderful film whether you're a Beatles fan or not.

Concert season is looking solid. Clutch next Saturday 5/13 for my wife's birthday weekend (one of her favorite bands) and Alter Bridge in August, both in Grand Rapids. Mustard Plug in September and Mudhoney in October, both at the same indie/punk venue in Ferndale. I might also grab Collective Soul in July for the fuck of it, since I could get Mezzanine seats where they're playing in downtown Detroit for $35-45/ea. I see they've got 3 out of 5 original members, but I have no idea if they've still "got it" or not.

Ed Sheeran is Billy Joel with slightly more talent, but he won his lawsuit and that's good.

Also, this is the coolest job in the world:

Joe Bennett, a forensic musicologist at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, told the AFP news agency he was “delighted” that “sanity prevailed” in the case.

“In music copyright litigation, cases involving one or two bars of music, the plaintiff’s allegation of plagiarism is almost always wrong,” he said. “Coincidental similarity happens all the time, particularly with chords and short melodic fragments.”

I realized I had only listened to about 11 hours of Billie Holiday so yesterday I began listening to her entire catalog.

What I've realized is that America produced at least three geniuses in music. She is every bit the equal of Ellington and Davis.

One of the local NPR stations highlights some local artists with upcoming performances in the area. I'm probably way late to the party, but this was the first time I heard the term "math rock". The song was titled Illustrious by a band called Sincerely. I really enjoyed it. It had me grooving while relaxing on my lunch break.

well now I have to talk husband into going to see Mustard Plug. I've had crappy experiences at the last few concerts I went to (I hate crowds) but they might be worth it, and a smaller venue won't hurt.

I've thought of coming to MN in the summer and if I do the timing likely will not lineup with this, but I'd definitely be up for the Friday night lineup if I were.
