USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

It stands up really well. She was well ahead of her time.

Way ahead. If anyone's seen "The Filth And The Fury" (Sex Pistols doc, the best one I've ever seen) she was in the background in an interview with them, on some British talk show. You could tell she was a bit advanced.

The punk scene was typical for a revolution: a few people who were really interesting bobbing along in an ocean of followers, sycophants, posers, con artists, and gawkers. Decline of Western Civilization shows this very well, too.

Saw Siouxsie at the first Lollapalooza and they killed it that day!

Same, saw the Chicago stop of the first lollapalpoza. All the bands were great but I just couldn’t and still can’t get into butthole surfers. Not sure why since I love most touch and go releases.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

This was one of my favorite bands back in the day. Rolling Stone, back when they actually meant something, named them the best unsigned band back in 1987 when this album came out. I feel fortunate that the first time I got to see them, in a tiny club in Portland, Maine, they had Mary with them playing violin. Her playing was a huge part of this album. Come to find out, she's teaching music now at a small college over in Vermont, living in the town she grew up in.

Not sure if this video isn't of the exact same take that ended up on the album. If it isn't, it's a masterful editing job, as this sounds exactly like it.

Not sure if RS does or doesn't mean something still, but I still check out their music reviews to look for artists I have not heard of (or know next to nothing about) and if the review piques my interest I'll seek the artist out to see if it's worth buying any of their material. I also use Spin and last.fm quite a bit to do the same.

They mean nothing to anyone anymore. There may be half a dozen of you who do this in the entire country at this point.

Oh nice! I'll check this out.

I'm hoping to start yet another project next weekend. Doing a modern grunge thing, maybe a little doom in it (me and the guitarists are doom guys at heart).

Cool! I really do not get that genre, like, at all, but I love that there are people out there doing sh-t like this, and I can't help feeling that, like good punk, it's at least 50% inside joke.

It isn't. Doom and stoner/doom have become super trendy lately, but there's still a significant amount of people that just love the old Sabbath vibe.

Cool. Hubby also has his personal project coming out sometime in June. More progressive, almost rock opera Tommy-like, feel.

Going to see Better than Ezra tonight, and I'm the driver so I can't even get drunk. Wish me luck.

You'll be Desperately Wanting to get drunk, but it will be Good that you don't. This Time of Year is good for concerts, though. When you get home, you can get drunk in the Summerhouse.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

The only reason I get RS is because many years ago they offered me a 50 year subscription for $50. I think it runs out in 2052. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. There may be one article every 2-3 months that I read, and the reviews are outdated by the time the mag prints/releases.

As it turns out I had a great time. They aren't any good purely as musicians, but the front man is infectious and all four men are unaffectedly enjoying themselves. Their set was 67% covers which ranged from the Stones to Naughty by Nature. They also did a lot of stuff by Dr. John because they're from Louisiana. They know how to give a fun concert. I'm glad I went.

There may be a half dozen people left that read music reviews as a means to seek out music they've not heard before?

Anyway something I knew was coming out was Craig Finn's final release of his solo trilogy so I look forward to digging into that.

I think he meant actually reading Rolling Stone reviews.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Correct. I'm consistently stunned that rags like Rolling Stone and Spin still exist in print form. I understand the lower-circulation niche magazines like Revolver and whatnot. But the pop-focused ones... that audience simply doesn't pay for music period, let alone for publications about it. This is to say nothing about the bull**** RS heaped upon itself for that nauseating tribute to the Boston Marathon bomber, and the totally bogus frat gang rape story.

Anyway, this new project of mine is starting to come together. We actually found a time when three of us can jam, we have a bunch of riffs ready to go and have all been listening to the same few records for theme and inspiration. I guess some day we'll figure out who will sing?
