“Fare Thee Well – Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir will reunite at Chicago’s Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last-ever Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue. “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead” will take place over three nights – July 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2015 – and mark the original members’ last-ever performance together. The band will be joined by Trey Anastasio (Guitar), Jeff Chimenti (Keyboards) and Bruce Hornsby (Piano), and will perform two sets of music each night.

Yep. I'm in.

Haven't seen any of the living members of the Dead since 2002 when they did a couple of reunion shows at Alpine. I mentally said my fare thee well at those shows and have stuck to it.

This is different though. Pretty much every Head I know is going - both people that I used to tour with as long as 20+ years ago and newer friends that I have yet to see a show with but were on the same path as me back in the day. One last chance to get together in a community that at one time in my life helped to define who I was.

Excited that it's at Soldier Field too. Saw all 9 Grateful Dead performances there and it will be cool to get back in that space.

One more ride... :)

Oh yeah and having Trey and Hornsby there helps to cement my decision. Two favs of mine on their respective instruments.

I so wish I could go to that. I haven't seen them since Brent passed, and following them around the summer of '89 rivals the backpacking I did through South America for an overall extended adventure.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I still have that last show on CD. That weekend, I was in MIL to see Pearl Jam for the first time.

The Mars Volta: De-loused in the Comatorium

Now I need to listen to At The Drive-In...

Oh man, that's such a good album. (I haven't listened to it in about a decade but I still remember the first time I heard it back in college.)

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Long Beach Dub Allstars - both of their albums.

The drummer and bassist from Sublime formed this collection of musicians a year or three after Nowell died and released these two albums over a span of a few years.

While I love the idea and attitude of Sublime, I find their recorded work to be limited in terms of listenability. They certainly have a few absolute classic songs within their genre that I love love LOVE, but the rest of the catalogue hasn't aged all that well imo and I struggle to get through it when the mood takes me to revisit it.

The Allstars are a much more complete realization of the vision. Great stuff.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

A playlist of 200 or so Surf-Roots-Reggae-Dub songs that are pulled from my collection - does not include traditional, contemporary or roots reggae.

Bands/artists including Slightly Stoopid, Indubious, Iration, Stick Figure, Alific, Boss Rebel, Audiodub, Dub Pistols, Dirty Heads, Pepper, Stick Figure, Close Enough, Lefty at the Washout and on and on and on.

Am I too old for this to be the primary music that I listen to for the past couple of years? Probably what I listen to 80% of the time.

Puts a smile on my face.

Has the sunshine of reggae while being far more diverse and upbeat and at times edgy.

Hello midlife crisis! :D

Here's a new discovery for me in this genre:

Cydeways https://soundcloud.com/cydewaysmusic

Their (his) music isn't on iTunes yet but can be downloaded for free at the above link. I believe there are 14 songs... so an album's worth.

Check out: "Get On It" "Good Vibrations" and "Better Day" for a good taste.

Seriously catchy and well produced stuff. A punk kid of that age/attitude should not be able to craft songs of this quality. Been listening to it over and over for the past few days since finding it.

:)

Tom Petty took home a lot of Grammy's last night.

I only learned the name Sam Smith last week, and that was someone complaining that his song was a direct rip off of Petty's. Then the station played the two songs, and there's no way that Smith didn't directly rip off Petty regardless of how many times he claims otherwise.

According to the media, I'm supposed to be upset Beyoncé didn't win. And yet, I don't like any of Beyonce's music.

And if he wasn't blatantly trying to rip off Petty, don't you think someone somewhere along in the recording/mixing/mastering/promotion process might have said, "You know, that song sounds just a little too much like I Won't Back Down, you might wanna think about coming up with a new melody for that one."

I mean, artists steal riffs and licks from each other all the time, but at least they put a new melody on top of it, and that's what a song is, the melody. Here's one I just discovered fairly recently.

ELO, 10538 Overture from American Hustle

There are an incredible number of songs that are essentially the same structure and/or same chord progression.

If you can play three chords, you'll be able to play an awful lot of songs.

Like pretty much every Rolling Stones song ever produced... :)

If you can play three chords, congrats! You're a punk rock band!
