USCHO.com Men's Division III pre-season poll

Re: USCHO.com Men's Division III pre-season poll

If, when the ECAC West gets an autobid, I would expect the league to give their tournament champion the autobid and not the regular season champ.

If and when that happens, that decision still won't stand up to any genuine logic... It'll just constitute another stupid/cynical gimmick designed to lend more credence to a little weekend tournament, which might or might not mean a thing. (Sure, D-1 hoops does it that way, but that fact alone is completely superfluous in this argument.)

"Sample-size" is far more significant in this regard, and the much richer RS-schedule is a better vein to mine... There is no cogent argument to be made to the contrary, if one has the slightest clue as to how stats shake-out.

It's valid to say that they SHOULD improve, but it's by no means a guarantee. Look at Gustavus Adolphus last year. They lost only one senior after a season that brought them to the second round of the NCAAs. They were widely seen as a powerhouse coming into last year that would make the MIAC into a formidable conference. But they failed. They lost 8 games, lost their conference championship, and didn't make the NCAAs.

I simply don't put teams in the top 3 unless they have both a proven body of work and are returning the majority of their team. Since there are at least 5 teams by my count that could fit that description, I wouldn't put Plattsburgh in the top 5, let alone the top 3.

It should be noted that in the second semester Utica may lose some of their Canadians that transfer due to their lost scholarships. If that occurs I would no longer consider them a top 5 team.

Toto, you have a supporter ;)

That's what I'm sayin! Potsdam is TERRIBLE. 3-0 is great, but top 3 teams in D3 great? Not convinced yet. If they can produce a convincing win against Genny and lay the smackdown on Brockport next week, I'll be convinced, assuming that no other teams surprise me with outstanding performances.

Your interest is misplaced. Have you no other team of concern to you? Please.. spare us the critique. It is a tad early for such detailed criticism don't you think?

You don't know Bob to well to know his motivational tactics and his coaching (while considered controversial by some) techniques. Bob preaches defense and you hold a team scoreless, give up only 14 shots on goal (of which maybe 2 were decent shots) and he wants heads. I've seen Plattsburgh up by 7 or 8 goals and a defensemen misses and assignment, goaltender bails the team out and the player gets benched. So the first thing most of us Plattsburgh fans said when we read this was "yup, typical motivation by Emery". Instead of 14 shots against, he wants 8. He could win every game 1-0 and be happy. Scoring goals is not what Plattsburgh preaches, so try and get it out of your head.

I guess SNC should have beat Marian by more then 1 too right? Utica should have been able to beat a .250 Naz team by more than 2, and Brockport by more than 3? Norwich gave up 4 goals to Plymouth State. Plattsburgh has only beat Potsdam by an average 2.25 goals over the past 4 games and by 3 or less 7 of the past 9 games. I'd say holding a team to 14 shots on goal, a shut out, and a +37 SOG difference is a pretty good start.

So next weekend...just so we have this right...

Plattsburgh beat Geneseo by a combined 11-2 last year at home, how "big" do they have to win by? And lay the "smackdown" on Brockport...So to be better then Utica they only need to beat them by 4 right?

Re: USCHO.com Men's Division III pre-season poll

Brockport has some really good goaltenders so laying the smackdown on them isn't exactly easy anymore. Oswego only beat them 2-0 last year at the Tuttle.

If Platty stays 3-0 through the weekend, I would strongly consider them for a top 3 spot assuming no other teams surprise me in the meantime. SNC is struggling to get started, that's true. Still not enough info for me. Adrian is tossing around some lesser teams like toys, which is to be expected. Whenever those two play each other I think we'll get a much better idea as to where those teams lie. As for Utica, they just need to prove some consistency and I like them for the NCAA tournament. They've got some solid teams in their conference (Hobart, Neumann, Manhattanville) that they're going to be playing on a regular basis. If they can pull off some convincing wins against them, they're a #1 contender. In the end, all the teams in the top 10 are contenders, in my opinion. After a few weeks I think we'll have a pretty good idea as to where those teams stand.

Re: USCHO.com Men's Division III pre-season poll

You do know that nobody cares if you win by a goal or eight goals as long as you win , right? In college hockey, a win is a win and a loss is a loss. Teams never get punished in the rankings if they beat a bad team 3-2 in overtime...THEY WON THE GAME.

However, fans of certain teams call for coach's heads on a platter when that happens. Won't name any names here...

I think maybe USCHO might use the "a W is a W", but the "other" site pollsters seem to look more into the stats then just a W, and acknowledge good wins and bad losses more then the USCHO poll. They also look at what other teams did/didn't do in regards to where teams are put. Probably because the people voting on the "other" site care a little more and put a little more thought into a poll then the 5 minute (max) research it seems the USCHO people do...

I don't know anything about Brockport's other 'tenders, but Green was stellar at Utica on Saturday; best glove I've seen in a long while.

Could have easily been an 9-2 game if not for his excellent play.

Re: USCHO.com Men's Division III pre-season poll

bak draft…what is your top 15?
I was just breaking B$@#....I dont think there should be a poll until maybe a third of the games have been played,as has been mentioned b4,teams change dramatically when you lose certain seniors and of course in my teams situation losing 14 guys....i think the poll seems to be more of a predication of what may happens this yr?? Which is fine, keep us in the game...this is after all about having fun, rooting for your team and giving it to Fishman 81:p
