USA 2010 Olympic Team

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Ultimately, this team has just 3 people with previous Olympic experience. Like it or not, there is a distinct need to have people in the dressing room who have that experience, the motivation and the drive to know what to do and say to help the young, new guys out. Yes, most of the new guys played for previous juniors teams, be it U20, U18, U17, but the Olympic games is a bit more intense.

Drury might be able to shoulder some minor portion of the blame of the rangers struggles, especially having such a large contract as has been said, but theres 18 skaters and 2 goaltenders for every game, and Drury isn't the only one underachieving in the Big Apple.

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Why do I have the feeling that this team was crafted to simply roll over out of Canada's way?

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Congrats to all the USA Olympic Team Guys, quite an honor.... especially love to see so many college names. :)

Disappointed the fans booed Kessel, not appropriate in this instance, IMHO, PLUS he wasn't even there, it was the poor nervous kid who took the brunt. Ouch :p

I agree on booing the little kid who wore Kessel's jersey...poor kid.

Bruins fans, get over it already!

This team was created to get a lot of guys experience for the next Olympics...which they will get as they get rolled in this Olympics ;)

I am sure forsberg will tell us the team will win Gold but if they finish 4th I would consider that a success!

The next Olympics where they will get rolled by Russia in Russia?

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Probably...but I would bet on us doing better in Russia than in Canada :p
To be honest this Olympics will be our best shot at a medal for sometime. Playing in North America, on NHL-sized ice, against some seemingly weaker Euro teams, with 2 of the best goaltenders this country has seen since Richter in his prime.

In 2014 you're looking at possibly having zero of these players (no guarentee of NHL players). Playing in Europe on the big ice, against competition that will be remarkedly better than now.

Just for clarification, you're saying that there's a good chance that, in 2014, the Olympics (at least the Hockey) will return to an amateur competition like it was originally?

That would be neat.... it'd be like watching a men's version of Women's Olympic Hockey but with better rules (like checking).

I do not consider USA to be the favorites but I do believe they can win. Brian Burke is doing a good job of sandbagging. It's not like we're sending a bunch of scrubs to Vancouver.

Russia, canada, and Sweden have more talent and more experience at this point in time. 4th is a reasonable expectation for USA.

The NHL has claimed that they will not allow players to compete in 2014 (or at least not take an olympic break). Ovechkin and I believe a couple other russian players have come out and said they are going to play anyway, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I imagine it will be one of the bargaining points for the next CBA.

Didn't the NHL mention that they'd like to revive the World Cup of Hockey in future years?

If the NHL does stop sending players I hope the olympic tournament adopts the amateur restrictions as mentioned in an earlier post or has age restrictions like the olympic soccer tournament does. If not, Euro nations would most likely dominate future olympics by sending players from their own leagues.

Which is exactly what happened prior to 1998. Granted, the only time the North American teams dominated was in 2002.

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

The NHL will be going to the Olympics in 2014. It's a bargaining chip for the owners in the next CBA. Otherwise, I wouldn't be shocked to see some of the elite Russians blow off the NHL and go home for it anyway.

If there's a medal for skating fast handed out, I like our chances there. :D

Frankly, I'd prefer to see a return to an amateur roster for ALL nations, not just the western ones. (Looking squarely at you right here, Russia.)

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Same here. I think I'd have more of an interest if it was college kids...

It would be a huge advantage for the U.S. (and the Canadians if MJ counts as amateur), because Europeans tend to sign pro contracts at much younger ages.

As a Bruins fan, I completely agree. Kessel is a great goal scorer who is playing for the team that I assume at least 95% of those in attendance at the Winter Classic are cheering for at the Olympics. The booing was completely uncalled for.

Boo him when he's playing against your favorite (NHL) team, not when he's playing for your country.

Sounds about right to me.

I laugh at the Buffalo fans that were booing Max Afiniganov last night.

Last i checked, you guys didn't want him! So boo him when he comes back after he's having a good season with Atlanta? Be happy for the guy that he got a chance with another team and is doing well with it.
