USA 2010 Olympic Team

USA GOLD 2010
The roster for the 2010 Olympic team will be announced in two weeks during the Winter Classic broadcast. What are your expectations/roster predictions/etc for this team?

Brian Burke indicated that they'll bring 12 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 3 goalies to Vancouver. Here are my picks:

Parise - Stastny - Kane
Ryan - Pavelski - Kessel
Malone - Kesler - Langenbrunner
Brown - Backes - Callahan

Suter - Rafalski
Whitney - Komisarek
Orpik - Goligoski
J. Johnson - E. Johnson

Miller - Thomas - Quick

This is a well balanced lineup and if they get stellar goaltending from Miller, they have a shot at Gold. I particularly like the hard hitting 3rd and 4th liners to compliment the skill on the top-2 lines. Dominant faceoff abilities/size at center worry me a bit.

Drury, Gaustad, Okposo, Gomez, Connolly, Steckel, and Byfuglien come to mind as other potential selections. Slow recovery from injury for Booth, Martin, and Gionta spell their doom.

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Not sure when JMFJ is supposed to be back from his injury. I think they have approximately zero chance at gold. If Russia or Canada don't win something crazy will have happened. I also don't see how Drury could possibly end up on the olympic roster, so I would take him off the other names that come to mind list. (now that I've said this i'm sure he'll end up the team)

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

This USA team is blue-collar. They will be a lot like the Islanders compared to the giants of Canada/Sweden/Russia. However, as the Islanders have proved this season. It is possible to win games and I honestly think if Miller has a good tournament and the US's 3rd and fourth lines do their job and not worry about scoring first but checking, blocking shots, clogging up the neutral they have a chance to be very successful.

Parise is one of the best goal scorers in the NHL. Sure Parise/Kane/Stastny isn't as flashy as Canada or Russa's first or even second lines. But they do put goals in and for the most part are consistent.

This USA team can definitely make the medal round if things go the right way. I wouldnt be so quick to discount them.

They just need to make sure Thomas goes nowhere near the net. I'd rather have Quick and Anderson as the back-ups than him.

Canada did finish seventh in 2006. Stranger things have happened but this Olympics is a bit lame for me. None of the games are played on international sized ice and that's what makes this different than everything else. Playing everything on the NHL sized sheet makes it easier for the US and Canada but tougher for the rest of the countries.

I'd love nothing more than to see Canada fall on its face again but with them having home ice I just don't see it happening.

The US is going to have its hands full like crazy regardless of who they put on the ice. That said, if Chris Drury lands on the roster... What a joke. The US is going to be a major pain in the arse kind of team to play against, but the optimistic view for them should be aiming for bronze unless Miller can get scorching hot and steal some games. Canada, Russia and Sweden are going to be sick, sick teams and Finland is going to have goaltending to steal games like crazy.

I don't think that's really true. Take a look at the 2006 rosters, for instance. The Czechs had two guys (third and fourth string goaltenders) playing outside the NHL, the Finns had six (four of whom had played at least a season in North America), the Swedes had five (all of whom except their third-string goalie had played in North America before). The vast majority of the players from the nations that have a shot at gold shouldn't have any problems with the NHL-size ice.

Bobby Ryan and Phil Kessel are two of the better goal scoring talents in the NHL as well. canada and Russia will have more talent from top to bottom but we have a lot of guys who are a living hell to play against. Kesler, Brown, Backes, Langenbrunner, and Callahan are very good players who fill other vital roles on a hockey team too.

Zach Parise and Ryan Miller will be the reason why USA wins a medal. Parise is somehow still underrated but this will all change in the world spotlight. No goalie has been better than Miller this season and he needs to stay hot in Vancouver!

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

I find myself rooting for the Slovaks often. They play a run and gun offensive style that is fun to watch, and they aren't one of the usual powers. Their goaltending often lets them down, however.

Uh huh.

Gomez and Drury will be the on the team barring injury, those two plus Kane and Parise are our best players. That roster is an epic fail waiting to happen.

Re: USA 2010 Olympic Team

Why would they play him when they have Backstrom, Kiprusoff, Rinne or even Niittymaki that they could put in before him?

Leafs fans always think their guys will get picked for everything.

You obviously didn't watch him in "action" against Miller and the Sabres last night. Talk about a tale of two different goalies.

Lyndman's goal (about 40 secs into the video) should get him nailed to the bench -- or sent down to the Marlies.

Have you seen Drury play this year? He can't even play defensively anymore. Like I said, if he makes the team its a joke.
