Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

I know the whole, "Hitler hears about X" videos on YouTube got old awhile ago, but I couldn't resist looking for one about last night's game. I just found it and I would post it, but the preview screen happens to include a subtitle with an f-bomb, so I'm going to play it safe and advise people who want to see it to just do a YouTube search for "Hitler hears of the Canada-USA game".

Trust me, the last subtitle is hilarious (though the joke is in poor taste ;)).

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

What does everybody think about the USA vs Canada game not on the big NBC network last night. Instead it was put on MSNBC which lessens the availability of seeing it in HD. I know charter doesn't offer that horrid channel in HD, although i must admitt this is the only time i'll ever watch MSNBC anyway.

Also thought about the overall broadcast, i'm glad we didn't have to listen to Pierre during the game but i could see his bald head between the benches again, must have been working for CBC...

There were virtually no commercials. It was awesome.

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

It was in HD on my DirecTV feed. Looked great! :D

I'm sort of a videophile, I thought it looked pretty terrible for an HD feed. Maybe just be because content providers don't think they need to allocate the same bandwidth for a HD version of a news channel that shouldn't be showing sports anyway.

I did like the lack of commercials, but they actually could have had commercials with the frequent breaks for guys to sweep the ice (I'll bet CBC was taking commercial breaks then and somehow convinced them to take 60 seconds or something, even though they're not supposed to in Olympic games).

Anyone notice that Sid the Great was a -3 last night, too?

It's Sid the Kid and Alexander the Great. Get it right. :p

And yes, he's soft. Odd though considering he was out there with Rick Nash (who was doing a good job backchecking) and Mike Richards for part of the game (who's pretty darn good defensively). They just didn't play well as a line and the defense/Marty stunk it up, too.

Like the draw the USA gets, veterans may need to keep the younger guy's egos in check at this point, but they're all NHL players and should be able to get focused.

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

1 US vs winner of 8 Switzerland 9 Belarus
2 Sweden vs winner of 7 Slovakia 10 Norway
3 Russia vs winner of 6 Canada 11 Germany
4 Finland vs winner of 5 Czech Republic 12 Latvia

What a route to the finals, can't play Russia Sweden or Canada until the gold medal game.

Its easy to look ahead and the way Fin played against Swe last night, USA seems to have a easier road to the GMG but you can't take anything for granted int his tournament. the swiss have Hiller who if he isn't getting burned out can take over a game. Finland and CZech are very good teams, so i'm keeping my finger crossed the stars line up for team USA.

I missed the Swiss game against the USA...but I did see them against Canada. Even though Hiller is playing well, Miller is playing equal to him and maybe better. I dont think Switzerland has anywhere near enough offense power to take care of the USA.

Speaking of the olympics and uscho...is there an Olympics belt being tracked??

Very true but they have this guy name Roman Wick, unbeleivable player and USA will have to track him close, he has played awsome all tournament, any Swiss offense so far in this tournament he has had a hand in one way or another. If i were an NHL GM i would look into getting him signed, legit 2nd liner... plays like pavelski but a better skater...

If we're adding total college team points, shouldn't we also include points for players not on Team USA? :)

That would bump up UW and UND's point totals a bit (not sure on other teams).

I thought of doing that...but the work day is over, and it's time for me go home...I'll leave that as an excercise for the reader.

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

I think it is high profile only to NHL or other hockey fans. Ski jumping, luge, etc appeal to the rest of the population because they are not seen on tv on a regular basis. If someone wants to watch these guys play hockey they could turn on the tv any given night of the week. The sad reality is that the Olympics provides great entertainment for hockey fans, but with NHL players, it does little to help grow the sport outside of the existing base.

I agree with your last sentence, but not the first part. It's the Olympics, it's the host country/favorite/next-door-neighbor against a US medal contender. This was a big deal to everybody. The NBC Olympics website had it on their front page, billing it as "The Game of a Lifetime" while they were busy not showing it. Luge doesn't have a following before the Olympics, or after the Olympics. People watch because it's the Olympics. They watch to see Americans compete, and they watch the high-profile events. NBC showed the Russia/Czech Republic game, for crying out loud (which was great).

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

women don't care about hockey, and they are paying most of the bills for NBC.

have you seen NBC's ratings the last 4-6 years. They can't pay there bills. knowone watches NBC. The olympics every 2 years is probebly what keeps the network running, no joke.

It boarders on the line of crazy when the network hypes this game as the biggest sense 1980 and then burries is on MSNBC behind Ice Dancing on NBC. This had the chance to have a bigger viewing audience then it did if it had been on the Big NEtwork. I havn't looked at the ratings but it probably came close to beating out the NBC primetime olympic coverage even tho it was on MSNBC. had it been on the big network it would have gotton unreal ratings, way higher then the stanley cup final i'm sure...

One side note about the USA win last night. If USA doesn't make a medal run or canada goes on to win the gold this win will go down i the hockey world as a fluke, unfortunatly. I jsut have a feeling thats how it will be remembered if USA gets nothing out of it or if canada ends up rebounding and winnin the gold. I will say this, this USA team is set up well for 2014 but there is no reason they can't do some damage this year, its all set up for them.
