Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

What else do you expect out of a Sioux fan? :p

Where did I say I was cheering for another country? :p

Reading comprehension...difficult for certain Tech and Gopher fans, I guess. ;) :D

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

I didn't read the last page of this thread, so excuse me if someone else has already said this.

In terms of the game not being shown on the broadcast network: I think NBC calculated that more people would be interested in seeing a large number of different sports that are only ever shown on TV every 4 years in this country, and I think NBC was right. The simple state of things is that people who aren't hockey fans the rest of the year aren't going to tune in and watch a single 2-2.5 hour game that they don't know anything about. People want variety. They want to see a few different sports as they relax on their couch. They want to see a few medal ceremonies. They want some touchy-feely packages in between the action. Next Olympic cycle, parts of this game will be replayed on the regular network. They can show a few clips, set it to some touching music, an over emotional narration, and some crafty editing of interviews from players and coaches. And people will eat it up. But very few (proportionally speaking) people would want to tune in and see the whole thing get played out. That's just the state of American television viewers.

Also, to the guy who said he didn't watch the game because he didn't have cable: You have an internet connection, right? If you look hard enough you can find the games streaming on-line. If you can't figure it out shoot me a message on here and I'll help you hone your search;)

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

At the very least NBC should have cut to the game for the 3rd period.
Exactly and this is the point.

Newspapers all over the country (even in the sunbelt) had USA hockey on their front page today. This upset is easily twenty times bigger than any Stanley Cup final, so far as mainstream media coverage is concerned.

Women watched the Super Bowl in record numbers this year. Why? The Saints, New Orleans, Katrina angle. The hockey game could of been packaged along those lines.

The hockey game could have been cut into at any point in the third period.

NBC blew it pure and simple. You better believe there are meetings in NYC today and a bunch of TV execs are covering their azzes.

Face it, NBC spent $820 million for the Olympics and then missed the biggest story of the entire event. PRICELESS.

The NBC executives are too busy celebrating because these Olympics have already surpassed their wildest dreams...they beat AI head to head...no other TV event has done that for 6 years. It would have been great if NBC switched and covered the third period, but they're in this for the numbers. They aren't there for hockey.

Dan Patrick put it this way: The Olympic Games aren't for you, you're already going to watch. The Games are for your mother, your wife, your sister and your daughter. They're not going to watch hockey, but you put people on ice whether it's the men, the pairs, ice dancing or the women and the numbers are going to be huge. They're going to watch. And NBC is going to be able to sell a ton of commercials in between their coverage and fluff pieces.

Hockey fans got to see the game on MSNBC, on high-def where available, with NO commercial interruptions and LIVE in all time zones. Oh, the humanity.

NBC is the 4th rated network for a reason. They are going to lose $150-250 million on these Olympics, so beating AI came at a pretty step price.

30 years later, ABC is still receiving grief for missing the Soviet-USA hockey game. Its was a blow to their prestige. Now NBC is having their turn at the trough.

We'll see how NBC covers the hockey for the rest of the Olympics. I'm guessing the won't be so cavalier in the upcoming games. The irony is that that they showed the Czech-Russian game on NBC and then blew it by coughing up the USA game.

Seriously, no one who wanted to see the game missed it. Doesn't NBC stream everything on USA and MSNBC/CNBC online? Regardless it was great to watch that game with no commercials.

For someone who mentioned ratings earlier it averaged 8.2 million people.

Team USA's upset of Canada was the second-highest rated hockey game on American television history since the Miracle on Ice and tied the MSNBC ratings record for Obama's 2008 election victory.

It was the most-watched sporting event in Canadian television history, according to the partnership of Canadian networks airing the games. An estimated 10.6 million people watched the game north of the border.

So more than any Stanley Cup game in BOTH countries. Interesting to see what a possible USA vs. Russia/Canada Gold Medal game might get.

Yes, and no. If you have a cable package, you can watch online. But you have to login with your carrier and a password given by your carrier. Which is ridiculous. If I had cable, I wouldn't be trying to watch it online. Either way, it's not difficult to find a pirated stream of the games.

Re: US Olympic Hockey - Let's Stick It To The Canucks Again!

I will say this, this USA team is set up well for 2014 but there is no reason they can't do some damage this year, its all set up for them.

None of these players will be on that team. The NHL isn't going to let them play anymore.

We'll see. I think the NHL is holding the Olympics over the NHLPA in the upcoming CBA talks. I think this will get worked out if the players give something back to the owners, say no trade clauses, etc in return for Olympic participation.

Someone else mention this somewhere (either in the main Olympic thread in the Cafe or on GopherPuckLive) but NBC knows that hockey fans will find the game(s) they want, no matter what channel. However, how many soccer moms/etc will go searching for ice dancing/etc or complain enough to the network to make a difference?

NBC got 8 mill US viewers, who KNEW the game would be on a secondary channel, and put in the work to find that channel. That was a safe bet on their part.

Do I like it? Nope. But, at least I've gotten to see hours and hours of hockey (and curling, another small hardcore fanbase), and for that, I am happy.

If all you had to do was log in with a password or your account number, then I would have watched it on the computer. I tried to. BUT YOU CAN'T GET THE FEED UNLESS YOUR CABLE OR SATELLITE PACKAGE INCLUDES MSNBC!!!!! My package includes NBC and CNBC, but not MSNBC, so I can't watch ANYTHING online.

NBC did cut into the Olympic coverage for the end of the game. It wasn't the whole third period, but it was the last minute or so. They interrupted whatever they were playing (bobsled, I think) with a hockey update and showed the last minute.

So yes, they still suck and should have done a better job, but they did do SOMETHING.

They will have to or they risk losing more players to the KHL and other leagues. A lot of these players consider medaling in the Olympics to be just as important as winning a Stanley Cup. Who would make up the Canadian and American teams? MJs and NCAA players? AHL players? In the middle of those seasons? Even if that did get worked out, the European leagues would still bring over their players, and it would be a slaughter. The NHL has less power on this issue that they'd like, they'll start feeling pressure from IOC, Hockey Canada, USA Hockey, NHLPA, etc. and will cave with minimal tradeoffs.

Exactly. Ovechkin has already said he will bail on his contract for that season if the NHL doesn't allow their players to play. Do you really think the Caps or the league will allow that to happen?

Well, the Capitals owner said he'd fly Ovechkin there himself. And Malkin already said something similar as well.

Every single Russian NHLer will do the same to play in the Olympics in their home counrtry. Think the Swedes might just follow suit? And the Fins? And the Canadians? It would be an absolute embarrassment to the league. Then they'd try to impose heavy fines and suspensions on their superstars when they come back? Yeah right. It would be a PR disaster that would kill the NHL.
