US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

I agree with the last two posts. Has Selects developed players.... not to the point Wizard is attempting to make but I would argue raising a player's level of awareness of what some of the best competition in North America looks like and actually playing with these kids on the same line, team, or against does assist in developing them- it raises the benchmark. Granted this is not weekly skill development or private power skating sessions that parents pay significantly for to an instructor that is for profit. I can only say my daughter has played with them for several years and all it amounts to a few spring hockey events, a vast number of new friends on both sides of the border, great parents, solid competition (from other groups that also make a profit), and oh yes the showcase in Buffalo was as good as anything I have seen. My daughter looks forward to playing with her "friends" every spring because it is fun and the kids love playing together. Isn't that what we are here for? I think their fees are reasonable for what they provide.

I am not familiar with Selects and looking for a little more information - it appears the girls are mostly of high school age. So they would be playing on a club team in the Fall (i.e. Assabet, Wizards, etc) and high school team in the winter. So is it correct to say they are a spring team? What tournaments do they do? I thought most players went back to their club team to do Spring/Summer Tournaments. Thanks for the info in advance!

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

SamB, check out their website. They actually start the kids on these teams in 7th or 8th grade I believe. Most all play winter club hockey and also HS hockey. They are a spring / summer team. They normally play three or four tournaments over the summer finishing off with Beantown. There is an overnight camp and showcase event in Buffalo in early July. There is also the European tour which we have never done but from many that I have spoken to have said it was a great experience. It is just a little outside of my budget.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

It is just a little outside of my budget.

Speaking of Budgets, Let me understand this… 30 of the top U18 players in the US have $3,500 to spend on a limited seasonal team? Something isn't adding up. Perhaps they let the top players play for for free thus allowing them to put on their web site, "blah blah blah"?!

welcome to 2014

while hockey certainly isn't the only sport that this applies to, volleyball is another, and if you want your princess to be a softball player like the other families of lesser SES you'll have to take your vacation so it coincides with her teams spring break trip to Florida ....

but of all the sports, women's college hockey probably has the highest family SES, OK, maybe polo or some other sport with even less participation that I, being merely a member of the middle class familiar with public universities wouldn't even know about, is higher.

Look at the roster of any women's college hockey team and their previous team/school.

even public universities like the U of MN or WI half the players went to private schools and a good number went to one of the hockey factories.

Your budget number is likely close. This would be for four tournaments, travel, hotel, meals and gas so long as you are not flying. Add plane trips in and budgets could go north. Many of the kids do not participate in all four and kids rotate in and out. Regardless of which organization the kids play for- Pro hockey, Selects, Vipers, Hurricanes, Oakville, MN or Quebec teams.... that attend these spring/summer tournaments- parents are going to be spending money- about $900 per event all in. I would find it highly unlikely that kids are given a discount unless there is financial need at home versus star quality on the ice. "Most" of these kids are all top caliber players on these teams. I am guessing that a couple of the kids on each of these teams get a break somewhere along the line but it isn't because she is really good, it is because mom and dad don't make enough money to afford the event and then secondly.... she is really good and all the kids like her. More logic than politics.

Any word on who made the roster for the U22 team? Was supposed to be announced this morning. Hux, I'm looking at you here...

So, wait, Kendall Coyne and Rachael Bona cut? I didn't see that coming. Wonder is Coyne hurt as well, I would have thought she was a shoo-in.

You have Alex Woken on your cut list, but she's listed on the U-18 roster.

Taylor Wenczkowski also made the U18 team.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Thanks all for the corrections. Corrected version. I think this is right, I caught a couple of cuts that I'd omitted. Also, Skarzynski was listed as a D on the festival roster, but as an F (but out of alphabetical order) on the team roster, so I've put her as F.
