US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

The Four Nations Roster is set:

Pos. Name Ht Wt Birthdate S/C Hometown 2011-12 Team
...
19 D Gigi Marvin 5-8 170 3/7/87 R Warroad, Minn. Minnesota Whitecaps
Gigi a D? I'm guessing this is just a USA Hockey admin problem, like when they'd reverse the hometowns for Potter and Darwitz.

No current collegians; I appreciate that USA Hockey realizes that in the big picture, they are better served by minimizing the time players have to be away from their college teams and school in general.

It also seems a lot of 94-95s are included in the camp roster (may or may not make final team) but maybe usah is evaluating them for future considerations (ie u18s)

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Also, it looks like they'll be way more competition at goalie than at defense and forward. Will they have enough pre-tournament ice time to properly evaluate 6 goaltending candidates?

It seems very unlikely that a 94 or 95 goalie will upset one of the Olympic silver medal goalies from Vancouver as all seem to still be playing in top form. None of these goalies were in the top 6 invited to the NATl team tryout in Aug and I don't believe any were at the Warren Strelow Camp which is for the top HS and NCAA goalies. I stick by my earlier prediction, and 2 of those girls will be named to the US under-18 team. This is a good way for USAH to evaluate girls as they're playing against better competition in this camp than they normally face in their regular season.

The roster for 4 Nations is already set (see previous page - too lazy to link :) ). This camp is to give the non-NCAA players a chance to practice to get ready for the camp. USA Hockey then fills in the remainder of the camp with high-schoolers.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

ARM - I think the Gigi on D thing is for real, not a mix up on the USA hockey website. I was at the first Boston Blades game a week ago and Gigi played D the whole game. She looked like a natural back there - not sure if she ever played D at Minny or not. I thought she was the best player on the ice that night...not to mention that she scored the OT game winner on a sweet move / top shelf backhand finish to win the season opener for the Blades.

I agree, she looked **** good back there. A lot better than Cahow in fact.

No -- I don't even remember her playing the point on the PP. I never saw her play in HS, but I did see video of her back at the point in a HS game. She has the skill set to play anywhere, but I'm not sure what USA Hockey's fascination is with offensive D. Personally, I think they could use another forward with size, strength, speed, and hands more than they need yet another person lining up at the blue line thinking "score" instead of "defend". That said, I hope it works out well for both Gigi and the U.S. Thanks for the info.

Yes, too bad the supreme benevolence of USA Hockey doesn't reach all the way down to the High School kids. It's apparently OK for them to be missing a week of school and the first week of practice and scrimmages (in Minnesota) with their HS teams.

I'm sorry but "Whah!!". I don't know a single elite player in HS who would rather miss the experience, exposure and opportunity to play in a national team camp than goto her HS practices or scrimmages.

Mr Pa Kidney:
Well, Duh! The point was that USA hockey intrudes into the academic and hockey seasons of the college players. Now they seem to be solving that problem by substituting HS players instead.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

The real purpose of the HS kids out there is two fold, (1) they are looking at goalies as Miller is out injured and the need a replacement "They should have had Ashlynne Rando out there!! Hands down the best at that age" (2) to evaluate and potential for the 18s and show continued interest in better players. There are players who are invited that can't make it for varying reasons as well. anyway that is what I heard from a reliable source.

This is what I could find - either Team USA's live blog or the Hockey Sweden site, which looks a bit too Swedish for me at this point.

http://www.usahockey.com//Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=TU_02_02&ID=23940

I looked on the Swedish Hockey site, and found lots of info on the four nations event. (You have too look under "Dam" and then "Damkronorna" ), but could not find anything in there about Video Feeds.

"DamKronorna" is the Swedish Female National Squad.

Here is the link:
