US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

They should ban Michael Phelps too while they're at it, because he's won more way Olympic medals than Canada and the U.S. women's hockey teams put together.

Yes, excellence has no place in the Olympics! ;)

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Former Yale head coach, and most recently Northeastern assistant, Hillary Witt has joined the Women's National Team staff:

National Festival schedule and rosters are up.

http://www.usahockey.com/National_Festival.aspx

Note that the "veteran" roster has a second page.

I may have to skip church on the 19th. :o

Hux - See your Burlington girl Kali Flanagan is on the U18 roster for the national festival - good for her! Saw her play at the Beantown for NSA and thought she looked good. Her sister also played well, but is a little raw still - plenty of time to develop though. Kate Flug missing from U18 team - very surprising - wonder if she is injured.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Can anyone comment on what seems like several late invites to the August Festival? Were there several injuries or did they just wait till the last minute for reasons only known to them?

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Thanks for the post. Full rosters are available here: http://www.usahockey.com/073112FestivalAnnounce.aspx

Hard to argue with any of the selections, but it's interesting that 3 of the top 5 points leaders from the u17 national camp didn't make the cut for the u18 team. I know they're looking at more than just points...

Hey - a chance to bring up the Minnesota bias theory! :)

Of the 5 top scorers at the U17 camp, 3 were from MN and 2 from elsewhere. One of the elsewheres didn't even make the U17 all star game (after being the leading scorer and assister in the camp - really!!? the national team program doesn't like playmakers??). One of the MN top 5 scorers didn't make the all-star game. Of the 3 that played in the all star game, 2 made the festival - both from Minnesota.

Let's look deeper.... there were 16 players who scored 2 or more points at the U17 NDC this year. Of these, 8 were from Minnesota and 8 from elsewhere.
- of the 8 Minnesotans, 6 played in the all star game (75%) and 5 were invited to the National Festival (63%)
- of the 8 elsewheres, 2 played in the all star game (25%) and 0 were invited to the National Festival (0%)

Why WOULDN'T you think that USA Hockey has a bias towards Minnesota girls based on this?

USA Hockey does have a bias toward MN, cause most of the best girls come from Minny. You do however bring up valid points. How does Kate Flug get cut? Is she hurt?

The East has a girl at the U18 Festival that had no points in 4 games at camp. Thus the MN bias ends, maybe? Actually, many of the girls at the U18 Festival this year had no points during their camp games, strange. How does that even happen at the forward position?

How about Team Minny vs Team 49 States? Serious!!!

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

I think the most telling part of your statistics is:

"there were 16 players who scored 2 or more points at the U17 NDC this year. Of these, 8 were from Minnesota and 8 from elsewhere."

8 were from MN. Of 16. Half of those who scored 2 or more points were from Minnesota. No bias.

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Blah, blah blah...Not fair...Minnesota bias...Eastern bias(years past) In my opinion most of the best US players are from Minnesota and out East. It will go back and forth in any given year. A ton of great players everywhere and many who deserve the chance aren't even considered. Most of the time it's who you know or who recommends.

Does it really matter who's on the team. It's Canada vs USA in most tournaments. Of course you get a GREAT goaltending effort and have a few close games where shots are 50-14 which to me is ugly hockey. I guess I would rather watch a tournament with Canada, USA, Team Minny, Team the rest. Not taking anything away from the Europeans. Wait I guess I am.

It is what it is...Someone always claims no fair and you know what it probably isn't and no matter who complains it won't change. Life's tough sometimes!

Here's a question I'll throw out. Should Colleges coaches be a part of the process? Wouldn't a college coach want his/her player or recruiting player on the team or trying out? Doesn't a player want to go play for a National team coach?

To answer the question Team Minny vs the rest. I'll take team Minny :D

Who was the highest scoring Minnesota kid in the NCAA's last year?

IMO there is bias against Minnesota girls. With Minnesota having the most players and the best facilities and training in the country, there should be more Minnesotans on the team. I think the USA bias is to gain broad acceptance of the sport in the US. USA Hockey doesn't necessarily pick the best overall players for the camps. They pick the best players from each region in proportion to the numbers. This gives more opportunity to other parts of the country. Otherwise I think you'd see a lot more Minnesota girls at the National Camps.

College coaches are part of the process already (and coach national teams) and that is part of the problem - they favor/select their own recruits sometimes at the expense of other, more talented players. Case in point this year - Princeton coach is the U18 national team coach. Girl who is committed to Princeton suddenly is at the National Festival - but has rarely been at NDC (only 1 other year) and never selected to the all-star game before (as a side note - she committed to Princeton to play soccer, not hockey - perhaps they will pick her up when the soccer season ends - Princeton always seems to have a very short bench). Possible she had a breakout year, but seems to be a pretty remarkable coincidence.

Sorry, but you are making assumptions and really have no clue. That player probably is more physically capable than anyone else that attended the camp (combination of size, speed and strength that few forwards have). Not to mention her hockey skills and sense are very good as well.
There was actually a player who is a recruit of one of the coaches of the u18 that was left out who probably deserves to be there.

There will always be questionable picks and omissions but it's all based on what a particular set of coaches are looking for.
