Kerry has the worst job in the world for the next three weeks.

Here's the punchline:
Netanyahu’s government (and in turn, his allies in the GOP) has effectively framed all criticism of current Israeli policy as “anti-Israel,” and often as anti-Semitism, an ironic stunt considering the terrifying rise of actual anti-Semitism that’s aligned itself with right-wing parties in the U.S. and Europe.

Likud is old hat at hiding behind "anti-semitic!" whenever their Draconian policies are criticized. They invented Political Correctness.

Yeah, but history will bear him out. We are going through a weird period in which the dunces and barbarians are gathering at the starting line. The intelligent and kind will be heckled if not lynched by the coming wave, but in the long run they'll be the only ones who are remembered as having any sort of vision.

1st shots fired in the Russian hacking

@BBCBreaking: US expels 35 Russian diplomats in wake of cyber attacks http://bbc.in/2hwYNAc
----
I expect Russia to PNG 35 US diplomats soon.

That's the way it works. Then Trump can kiss Putin's arse and reinstate them.
It's all a game with a clear set of rules.

Nah. The game says they get reposted to somewhere else.

Meanwhile the new Russiann cultural attaché will be setting up shop within a month.

EDIT: Just a (off the wall) thought -- since San Francisco is a sanctuary city, do the Russian diplomats have to leave? :)

Turns out Putin doesn't have to do anything. He already has his man in Washington come January.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

This was a lose-lose scenario for Obama, so I'm kinda surprised he took any action at all. Putin can just laugh at him, call him a lame duck, and say he's looking forward to working with Trump.

No, you never stop fighting. Because it makes the successor look bad when he or she rolls things back. Even if it's not apparent right away, you set the narrative. 2018 isn't that far away.

There's no way the American public has the attention span to remember or care about Russian hacking in 2018, let alone 2020. It is a losing issue with half the country anyway, unless it happens again, or he really does turn out to be The Manchurian Candidate.

All liberal issues at this point are losing issues. They don't know how to market and the other side does.

Obama doesn't care what the politics are anymore. This is just one step in a slow diplomatic escalation. I'm sure he has also back-channeled with responsible Republicans who will try to see that we keep slowly increasing the pressure on Moscow after Obama is out of office as best they can. The incoming administration will probably f-ck it up, but Obama can't control that.

The same can be said for allowing the settlements to be condemned. Having the keys about to be turned over to a toddler is weirdly freeing. We don't have to worry about continuity because we know the children are about to ruin everything, so we do a few things we always should have done because they're the right thing to do.

Add WaPo to the list of purveyors of fake news.

Despite what you might have read in this alarming story in the Washington Post, Russia did not hack Vermont's power authority.

Here's what really happened: in the aftermath of the US government's statements about Russian state-implicated hacking of the US election, government departments across the country audited their systems, looking for instances of the malware that was implicated in the DNC hack. One laptop at the Vermont utility -- not connected to the grid -- was found to have been infected by this malware, which is available for purchase by anyone through the criminal, underground marketplaces for hacking tools.

There's a lot of room between "Russia pwned Vermont's power-grid" and "a single computer was compromised by Russian-made malware that anyone can buy and use."
