US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Considering there's a good chance that Poland, or Ukraine, represent a good percentage of my genes, what exactly do you mean by that?

I mean there are enough Poles in Chicago and Pittsburgh to stand up against the Russians, but there aren't enough Ukrainians, Belarus, or Ruthenians. And before you invoke your ancestors mine are Slovak and they're not on the right side of the line, either.

We're actually in much better shape than during the Warsaw Pact. The East Germans, the Poles, and the Czechs are all safe and sound. Baby steps.

Are you just talking about immigrants? That's what I get out of this. In which case, you're probably right.

Yes. Senator Bedfellow aint taking a tough vote for the Torbesh and the Crimean Tatars in his state.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Didn't Russia "steal" Poland first?

Those guys go way back. There was a time, and not even that long ago (400 years) when the Poles were serious badas-ses. The Poles had bad timing and ran into Peak Gustavus Adolphus the Great, or it might have been they and the Lithuanians running Eastern Europe from the Baltic all the way to the Black Sea instead of that backwards Muscovite trash.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Huh. Wiki says it peaked in the early 17th century, so 1600s. And they had joint rulers? Wow.

Do you know if there are books about it?

I suspect there are, but I haven't run into a good one yet and I really hunt hard for histories of Eastern Europe (some people collect stamps...). If you find one please let me know.

Sadly some of the best historical information is in books about the Prussian push east and the Russian push west. Poland was caught in that vice and the Habsburgs weren't smart enough to realize a strong Poland was their only way to stay relevant.

The other interesting thing is the Poles had a moment when their throne was up for grabs (as it often was) in which they could have chosen to go with the Bohemian elector. Had they done that, they might have been able to build a very strong commercial power with access to the Baltic and the Danube, and they might have been in the running for the smaller German states when Prussia and Hanover started rolling up the small fry into the German Empire. Bavaria at least would probably have gone with them, and that's a pretty strong secondary right there. Woulda coulda shoulda.

I'd give them 2 weeks, tops, Senator.

@haaretzcom: McCain to Vladimir Putin, 'You will never defeat the Ukrainian people'
http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europe/1.762442

And that's being very generous to the Ukes. ("Did he say 'Ukes'?") Ukraine looks like an excellent place to test Russian T-90 tanks: 3/4s of the country are Northern Lowlands and Coastal Lowlands, including a straight shot from the Soviet, er, Russian border to Kiev. Not to mention that Moldova to the south has a Russian minority that wants to rejoin the Motherland, and Belarus in the north is a Stalinist leftover more obsequious to Putin than Trump.

The West of the country hates the Russians but the East is pro-Russian and would probably welcome them as, well, you know... In all probability you'd get a partition where the West would call itself the legitimate Ukraine and join NATO and the EU, and the East would join whatever Putin is going to call his Co-Prosperity sphere. He's 65 this year and not getting any younger. If he wants to make the Big Move, clock's ticking, and he'll literally NEVER have a better opportunity with his unwitting dupe in the White House.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

At this point, can we just agree that to the incoming administration, ALL policy is "foreign?"

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Interesting.

The editor of one of France’s most popular newspapers has said he will stop commissioning opinion polls ahead of next year’s presidential election, citing pollsters’ failure to predict Brexit or November’s US election.

Stéphane Albouy, who heads Le Parisien and its sister title Aujourd’hui en France ... said he wanted his journalists to focus on “on the ground reporting” instead of relying on surveys.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Nothing wrong with polling; just don't oversample, like they got caught doing in 2016.

No, but any changes that might draw some of the media's attention away from the pure horserace aspect of campaigns might leave room for a little policy discussion. (Ducks down for Scooby incoming)

Media polls (like anything else about media) is about drawing interest and related publicity. He may be advancing a subtle philosophy, but he's making a small but bad business decision.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Putin wants all the 'Stans under his thumb just to prevent Afghanistan from becoming another terror breeding ground that could spill over into Turkmenistan, which has large, untapped reserves of oil and gas that I'm sure Russia and China have been plotting to loot for years. Also, so maybe he'll be in a better position to exert more influence over Tehran. Particularly if the Trump administration tears up Obama's deal, and the US goes back to square one with Iran.
