US Foreign Policy 4.0: making the world safe to flee to if the MAGAts win here

France was unusual, if not unique, in that they granted full French citizenship to their conquered colonists throughout the colonial period. For example, St. Barts is not a wholly owned subsidiary of France - it *IS* France. French passports, euro as currency, the works.
So…it’s Ancient Rome but with crepes, croissants and a funny accent.

LOL. OK, so how did they do that, and why? Were they reserving land against an AFB or something? That seems like more than just avoiding taxes.

I found a fun one: La Tuque, Quebec. 11,000 square miles -- 6x Anchorage. It includes an entire hydroelectric dam and its reservoir.

This is like those comparisons of stars where each is 10x the size of the former and it goes on for like 12 jumps.

Maybe the best of all: the municipality of East Pilbara, Australia. It is larger in area than Japan. 143,850 sq mi.
Anchorage is really just a case of combing a city with a borough, and boroughs in Alaska are pretty massive. It happened back in the 70’s when they combined the city and borough governments. There are more conservative portions like Eagle River that keep threatening to break off, and get the response of mostly “ok, go ahead”.

Kinda seems to defeat the purpose of local government when cities are the geographical size of small states.
I would argue the opposite is a problem. Dividing contiguous areas into arbitrary areas contributes to a lot of problems with racism, policing, housing, city planning etc.

Suburbs should not exist.

People vote with their feet. Suburbs exist because many people don't want to live on top of their neighbors or next to cows.

Let me rephrase, Suburban governments should not exist.
Just watch a suburban city clowncil meeting sometime and it's hard to disagree.

While we're pipedreaming, I would posit that all suburbs should at least be planned smaller and denser. Acres of subdivisions full of McMansions as far as the eye can see should not be a thing. Americans need a mindset shift.

They only exist to undercut the major cities tax structure.
Oh, what you are saying is people can move to the burbs for the living conditions, but they should still pay taxes to keep the city where they work running?

Yes I agree with that. White flight is fine. Green flight is not. Assholes in Scarsdale should pay property taxes to keep schools in Harlem running.

Not just property taxes, but business taxes as well. Come to (Neighboring Township) and avoid (City) taxes. It is a race to the bottom for whichever municipality is willing to give businesses decades of tax exemptions in the hope that they can recoup it on property taxes later. Then a sizeable amount of the employees choose to live in a more rural township letting the current residents make up for the new strain on services the business created.

I'd rather see metro areas combined so the tax base can be distributed across the region. Then allow the townships/cities to use the funds to support services (fire, school, water, etc.)

Jesus I swear if you guys understood how ridiculous you sound (or if you heard people say this stuff and be serious about it) the shame you would feel would be palpable.

And before you protest...you are all agreeing with Kepler and his nose in the air takes...

:p
