The European Commission has taken the unusual step of equipping its staff with burner phones and plain laptops for their upcoming trips to the U.S., emulating precautions typically reserved for travel to countries like China, insiders report. The news comes amid reports of a major strategic decision made by Europe towards China, which could represent a blow to the United States.

The instruction applies to Commissioners and high-level officials going to the IMF and World Bank spring meetings next week, according to four sources familiar with the briefing.

Just like guidelines for visits to Ukraine and China - with Russians also 'caught spying' on US military bases and 'plotting attacks' in Germany - where fears of surveillance are high, staff won't carry their usual IT gear due to concerns over American espionage attempts. "They are worried about the US getting into the commission systems," one official disclosed to the Financial Times.
 
Multiple companies based in Germany, mine included, have been giving employees burner phones for at least the past month when they travel to the US regardless of what level the employee is. Even US citizens have access to them if they want one to be safe.
