US Foreign Policy 3.0: We're The Mets of International Diplomacy

For what it’s worth (and it ain’t much!) my contacts in state dept don’t think macrons intelligence is off.

that doesn’t make me feel any better

I literally don't know how you can come to that conclusion. Putin isn't controlling every minute detail. It takes time to filter this kind of info up and back down. Wouldn't be surprising if he had zero knowledge of this for hours. We have literally zero idea.

and no, we don't have to go in and stop him. The west has every intention right now to watch this play out and hope it takes longer and longer. There's a very clear line we've drawn in the sand and that's the first Russian soldier who crosses into Poland. Before then, there's literally nothing we can or should do.

You really think Putin isn't managing this war in every detail? Come on man he has been building to this for months. He controls all aspects of what Russia does he doesn't delegate especially a friggin war where his legacy is at stake.

I think the line has to move based on context...if we think nuclear war is a legit possibility the west can't just stand by and watch. I am not saying invade yet (or for the US hopefully ever!) because im guessing we think he will still show a measure of restraint but the second we don't think that anymore we can't just sit back and observe...we would be no better than the West was watching Hitler commit genocide. History will not judge us kindly.

Again we aren't there as of now and i am hoping we won't get there but we are a helluva lot closer now than we were 12 hours ago. The second a western NATO ally feels they are in danger the so called line gets erased. We can't expect them to hold back when war is on their doorstep and it is our duty to help them.

The next few days are going to be very scary for a lot of Europe. Let's hope this was a mistake and Putin fires a bunch of generals but if he doesn't that ain't good. I mean when people he bought and sold are even saying it that isn't good.

Putin is starting to remind me of those cult leaders who try to prove their deification by getting killed like Koresh.

Last time someone said something about macron's comments on Putin, they received quite a bit of flak :-P

Situations have changed...Putins actions are getting more upsetting. Still not sure I buy their intelligence but it is more believable now than 72 hours ago.

Imagine how stressed we would be living in Europe or if we were traveling abroad...i k ow my Jewish DNA would have me fleeing ;^)

The US intelligence here has been off the charts accurate. We may joke about macron, but he knows how accurate we’ve been, and he’s talking to putin. Macron is running his fee fees through intelligence before reports come out on his calls.

No, I don't. The same way no one can manage all of the minutiae on a massive project. It's literally impossible. He may give general directions, "take Kyiv. Don't care how." But he's not saying blow up the largest reactor in Ukraine a mere 350 miles upwind from my favorite dacha.

You haven't been around a true micromanaging boss, have you... hahaha.

I will agree that minute by minute details aren't his thing. (See: expired food rations, rotted rubber tires, fuel shortages) But knowing landmarks, key facilities, and people to get access is more his thing. He also is leaning more on that intelligence gathering source instead of trusting the more progressive/moderate politicians to smooth things over. Someone get too close? Make em dissappear. Need to cover your tracks? Feed em some bullsh** cover story.

The problem is, you can make one person dissappear. You can make one person believe your bullsh** story. It's a lot harder when hundred, thousands, or hundreds of thousands need to dissappear or be forced a bullsh** story.

This also goes to he's always had a good life. KGB job out of college, assigned a pretty easy East German post, earns money and accolades, gets a pension, Soviet Union collapses, lands a sweet gig as a politician, earns more money and accolades, becomes president, earns more praise and power, and it starts to go off the rails when more and more countries become less corruptible and more democratic.

Putin sees the clock ticking. Time is running out and he doesn't want to willingly cede power.

Hitler micromanaged his forces in era when the speed of communication was nothing like it is today - even during times when lines are temporarily severed. He's not going to make every single decision but I don't doubt he's as immersed as humanly possible.

Yea looks like it was a spontaneous firefight which, by all recent indications (including video), was actually initiated by the Ukrainians.

I understand they’re in dire straits and are reaching out for any help, but Zelensky milking the nuclear psyops angle with this, particularly in light of Putin’s recent comments, is playing with fire.

Having worked for the ultimate micromanager before (and took a 7 percent pay cut to get away from it which was worth every penny), just because it may be impossible doesn't mean he won't try.

Humans had a good run (at fucking up the world). Maybe the world would be better off after a nuclear winter kills most of us off. NATO should just flop their dick on the table (no fly zone) and dare Putin to do something about it.

That's not what happened, here. This was a local firefight. It wasn't grand theatre strategy.

Then that is different...and also why I said if ;^)

I don't want us to ever act rashly, but since we (as in you and me) are observers all we can do is comment on what we know in the moment and reassess as things go forward.

Thankfully for all of us the people in charge know more than we do :^p

Sorry but I'm not convinced her criticisms here are valid or even necessary regarding what it is she's protesting.
