University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Joe Gasparini, assistant hockey coach at the University of Vermont and the team’s director of operations, and John Gobeil, will be joining former UVM coach John Micheletto at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Micheletto, who was with the UVM hockey program for 10 years, is replacing Don Cahoon.

Micheletto was the Catamounts’ associate head coach. He had served as an assistant to UVM head coach Kevin Sneddon when Sneddon was the head coach at Union. Micheletto was an assistant coach at Notre Dame before joining Sneddon at UVM. Micheletto also served as the program’s director of recruiting. He also worked with the team’s forwards and power play, handled video analysis and assisted in planning practices.

Oh boy. Wrong time of year to be rebuilding a staff... Kids arrive in ajust a few weeks. UGGH

Actually, I hope this won't affect their decision. Anyone who's been paying attention the last couple of years might question Sneddon's grip on the program.

As we have learned, some recruits feel their tie/relationship to the school that has recruited them is determined by their relationship to the Assistant Coach who recruited them. That coach is the person who had nurtured the relationship and is largely responsible the recruit's signing with the school.

At this late date, it would seem unlikely that you'll lose anyone unless the Juniors are really on their case.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

This is the best news the program has gotten in years. Most of the players cant stand Gasparini. He has no idea whatsoever what he is doing. The only reason he got the job is because Micheletto relies on his brother for his recruiting so he doesn't have to travel as much. This is not a big loss at all considering who I am hearing is coming in as the two new assistants one of which has been hired.

From the Mack report:
That will leave Vermont with two open assistant positions, one of which will be filled by Kevin Patrick, the sources said. Patrick was the head coach of the Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) last season. The other position is likely to be filled by Kyle Wallack, who also coached in the USHL last season with the Indiana Ice.

Chris Warner is reporting that Patrick and Wallack will be UVM's assistants. If he says it, I'd take it to the bank.

Would think that wouldn't hurt your future recruiting at all, with the contacts they both have in the USHL (and I'm sure elsewhere).

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Addition by subtraction IMO! Joey never impressed me at all.

If you look at this closely, I really got to believe that this whole thing with Mick annd Joey leaving if for the best. Joey likely left, knowing Sneddon's contract is up soon and given then current state of things there is no guarantees. So he goes to Michelleto and gets a job which likely gives him certain security. But, why would Michelleto hire Gasparini? I think we know why. To me it seems as though Michelleto while a super human being has been complacent in recruiting and coaching and still it. Sneddon goes and gets two vets as assistants with great resumes and Michelleto takes a young Joey. If Wallack does come on board, Sneddon gets an assistant who while at Yale, had Yale scoring in bunches. Can't wait to see that in our power play. In Patrick you get an NCAA defensmen who was a head and assistant coach.

Look at our bench, three guys who led teams, with great resumes, connections andn work ethich and we lost Joey who was NEVER a coach before UVM and Michelleto who I think has been lazy on the trail. Look at all the really good players they recruited. Zemgus played in VT and they fell on him early. Brickley and Paliotta were good recruits. Stalberg came because of his brother. McCarthy fell to them. Pollesero fell to them. Fallon fell to them. Michelleto was in charge of recruiting. Word was also out that UVM was rarely at prep schools or those tournaments, yet BC, Providence, BU get on those kids early.

Just my thoughts. Anyone know how the injury situtations are with Lukkoo, Brickley and McCarthy? Need them healthy.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

yeah, this can definitely be spun glass half full or half empty and leaking

I agree that it is probably a good thing medium and long term, particularly if the new hires bring some elevated talent and energy (recruiting, game planning, motivation tools)

Gaspirini brought his brothers recruiting system, otherwise he never gets hired in the first place

Probably a bit of a tough transition though, tough to be recruiting players at the moment with no staff

Roy brothers would be good additions about now

Purely conjecture but if Wallack joins the coaching staff, knowing the issues he had here in Indy ... I wouldn't be surprised to see Fallon or Polesello leave.

Falloon loved Wallack (from his mouth).

Wow, that's a surprise ... his playing sucked during the first 2/3 of the season. When Wallack was let go & Skjodt took over, he turned into an entirely different being on the ice.

Color me amazed, and if it's true, glad for Jake.

FWIW...

Still waiting for an official announcement but I know @Roy_K15 HAS settled on where he will play next year. Sources suggest @GoNUathletics

Also, as expected, Derick Roy will join Kevin. I know the school has been decided because Roy told me so, but he wouldn't say which H.E. one

Rumors are pretty heavy that the Roys are going to NU.. you can also color me unimpressed with the hiring of two asst. coaches that were recently fired from the USHL.. I would call the glass more than half empty

Thanks for the heads up on this. If true, what a ****ing bummer--it's like getting kicked in the nuts, over and over. Who knows, maybe we can be competitive this season, but I'm inclined to agree with VTinNY. Half empty may be a little harsh, but the glass is not nearly as full as I'd like!

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

I'll let the product on the ice this season decide for me whether the glass is half full or half empty. I'm concerned that the prospective assistant coaches may not be what I was hoping for but they are possibly an upgrade from what we had.

Not picking up Kevin Roy would be disappointing on top of losing Girgensons, Deluca and Stalberg but one player does not make a team. This team has talent, if they have goaltending and pull together and play like a team they will be fine.

And here was nothing at this time last year that told me UML was going to end up anywhere other than with PC in last so anything can happen if they pull together.

Agreed. Wallack is a very good hire. When he was at Yale they were scoring in bunches. His team at Indiana was 19 games over .500. Patrick was at Wisco when they were the #1 seed. Him over Joey is a HUGE upgrade.
