University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

anyone else notice that in the uscho poll we dropped from 8th to 9th? UNO stays at #4 even though we were the better team most of the weekend and get a split in their barn..... I really don't care about the polls but seems fishy to me.

Nothing strange about it at all. You have to look at each team's position, and what happened around them. UND basically swapped with Michigan, who had a nice weekend. UNO stayed in 4th because Maine, who was ahead of them plunged after being swept, and the two teams immediately behind UNO, Miami and UNH either split or had victories over soft competition. If Maine had split and UNH swept, both would likely have knocked UNO back to 6th.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

They now have a chance to put together a nice little run, with their tougher games at home and easier games on the road, for the most part, for the next month plus. Let's hope that happens.

This weekend's series has a lot of importance tied to it. We haven't put up the best numbers in true Non-Conference play (1-2-0)* and after this series, we have only a home series against Robert Morris. If we can sweep this weekend, it will help make up some of what we lost from the series against Maine.

*We play two "non conference" games against WCHA opponents. (Tie against Anchorage and upcoming Hall of Fame Game at Minnesota-Duluth).

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Polls are based on votes from voters who only see a tiny number of games each weekend, and make decisions largely on scorelines and local preferences. Add up all the ignorance and it's little surprise that teams can move up or down unpredictably. The only poll that matters is the PWR, and that ranking isn't relevant until January, when there are enough NC games to make up comparisons.

+1

I've witnessed one voter go through the process. It's ridiculously complicated. And there's so much that gets weighed in.

ECACHL_Writer gets to vote in the poll, so that should give you an idea of how worthless it is. That guy's a hack.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

The Sioux need to have a good weekend against ND to make up for their disappointing series against Maine.

That's for sure. PWR will take a beating with anything less than a split, and probably a nice boost with a sweep.

A sweep would be a big help come March and PWR time. Notre Dame has been impressive so far, and look like one of the top teams in the CCHA. Added to that, we only have two other true non-conference games left this season, and none against any of the other top conferences. While a split would be acceptable, a sweep would do wonders for seeding. It's very possible that BC will be a #1 seed come tourney time, and I'd prefer to not to meet up with them until the Frozen Four at the earliest. The best way to avoid them is to get a #1 seed as well. If we sweep this weekend, and play up to our potential the rest of the year, we'll have a very good chance at getting one of those #1 seeds.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Four big games coming up against teams currently below UND in the WCHA standings.
If UND can win at least 3 of the 4 against SCSU and MSUM, that'd be great.

Considering that these games are at home, anything less than 3 wins would be very disappointing. SCSU has played well below expectations and the Sioux should be fired up for this series with Genoway playing for the first time against SCSU since he was injured last year. Two wins against MSUM is a must.

The SCSU series is at home, but the Mankato series is on the road.
I think your point still stands though. :)

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

We need some WCHA sweeps, especially against the teams we are "supposed" to beat. Its going to be essential to prevent us from falling too far behind Duluth, Denver, and/or Omaha.

I concur, especially since we don't play Denver or Duluth in league play again this season. We have a chance to gain points on UNO, when we play them in Jan. I agree with Brian, we need 3 of the next 4 games to keep up with the Joneses. It would be nice to get off to a home sweep this weekend, especially with all these home games coming up...

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Has anyone considered how embarrassing it could be if UNO takes the league championship in their first WCHA season? They are already clipping along at a hot pace and if mean dean can keep them churning after the xmas break alot of teams including ours will either be trying to hold pace or looking at UNO's backside saying "a-bwhaaa?"

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

I know polls don't mean crap but if you look at the most recent poll North Dakota has played against the Number 1 (UMD), 4 (UNO), 9 (Maine), 10 (Denver), 12 (Notre Dame), 14 (Alaska), and 15th (Wisconsin) ranked teams so far. Their only games against unranked teams were against Bemidji State and Alaska Anchorage. We beat all of these teams except Maine. Now we need to finish off the first half of the season with good showings and some wins against St Cloud and Mankato. If we do that we will have had a decent first half of the season against a lot of good teams. On paper the second half of the season should be easier but who knows.

The WCHA meatgrinder should cool them somewhat in the second half, but I must admit I am impressed with how effective they are and how quickly Dean has built the program to compete at this level. I expected UNO to be a notch above Bemidji. They have exceeded everyone's expectations without a ton of stars, but with tons of team cohesion....

Jeebus. If the sioux are anything like they have been in the past few years, they're a second half team. If they're doing this well against teams that tough I'm going to hate the way this season turns out...

Article on NHL.com about Sioux recruit Rocco Grimaldi:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=544782

Another recruit from Southern California.

Grimaldi also admits learning a lot growing up in his hometown of Rossmoor, California.

"I had so many different lessons growing up in skating, shooting and stick-handling," he said. "That's why hockey in California is where it is right now. There are so many great coaches there willing to help and put in the time and effort with you. Whatever you need, they're there to help. That's what I loved about being in California -- you had so many options available."

Rossmoor, CA. I'm practically neighbors with the Grimaldi's. Small world.
