Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Christmas came early.;) ...besides everyone knows EJ is the star on that team and STL will be just fine without TJ Fatty.

Also New Jersey will be just fine without their leading scorer Zach Parise.

This was posted over at the UND/SCSU game thread. From what Chay is saying it sounds like the team is starting to play better hockey but there is still much room for improvement. This team could be awsome by the end of the season.

Despite the talent, the Sioux are 9-5-2 overall, though they are 4-1-1 in their last six games.

"We've definitely been inconsistent," said Genoway, whose team was picked by the media and the coaches to win the WCHA in the preseason. "Some nights we've been inconsistent for 60 minutes and sometimes for back-to-back nights. There's not a weekend that we've been overly happy with.

"Definitely, of late, we're starting to figure out our systems a little bit."

And Genoway's glad to be a part of it.

Sounds like hockey is a complicated sport. Chay is in his 5th season with the Sioux and an Academic All-American and he is still learning the systems? Sounds like UND needs more academic classes teaching hockey systems to our players and fans. Now only if Gino Gasparini, Dean Blaise, and Hakstol could collaborate and write the textbook. That would be awsome!

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Hextall out until after Xmas with an arm injury.
Gregoire out indefinitely with a potential concussion from practice.

Ouch. Heal up quickly, boys.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Marto is actually a pretty good forward.

Imagine if Malone could score against every team the way he can against SCSU.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Very interesting game last night. Dell played outstanding. While not wholly responsible for the goal that was scored, he probably should have ate up that puck as opposed to leaving that rebound. Saying that, Frattin should have cleared it. Other than that, Dell played great. He was, for the most part, positionally sound, and made some great saves.

Frattin scored again. He just has an amazing shot, and puts himself in position to fire it off. If he keeps this pace up, he could hit 40 goals this year. While not very likely, he has played some of the team's most difficult competition already. If he were to hit that number, he would be the first 40 goal scorer in D-1 since the early 90's.

Very pleased with Malone last night as well. Hopefully he can keep that play up, especially while Gregoire is out.

A win tonight would be very big for the team. St. Cloud is good and should be at the top of their game after last night. Hopefully we'll see someone else step up and put in a goal or two, perhaps Kristo can get going. Anyway, pleased with the win last night, and let's get two more points tonight.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

It was a gritty win last night, but this team is not going as far as we all hope missing two players from their top line and playing two converted defensemen up front.

I thought the game was not particularily well played, by either team. I was actually impressed with SCSU's physical play. For years they've been a soft team that has avoided contact like the plague, especially in front of the net. They seem to be changing that, and it should help them in the long run.

Like FS23, I was also watching the BC-BU contest last night, for awhile. Candidly, I think the WCHA teams are going to struggle against some of the top HE teams this year, much like we saw against Maine, DU's troubles against BC and Wisconsin's against BU. Good puck movement and skating by all those teams.

Glad to see the help from BSU and DU last night getting two big wins that will help to tighten up the league standings. Now, if we could just get UMD-DU to tie, and maybe UNO and BSU also, a Sioux win tonight would put us in good shape.

Agreed. I've watched Boston College play a handful of times now, and they are as good as advertised. They can be a little soft in their own zone at times, but they pass the puck extremely well. Given their speed, that makes for a deadly combo. As for BU and Maine, they are both top notch teams as well that can be just as lethal as BC. The tide has shifted to the east it seems.

North Dakota, and for that matter Duluth and maybe Denver or UNO, have the firepower to take down any of those teams. In my opinion, one of the biggest factors in one of those games would be where the officials came from. The officiating in the BC-BU game last night was dreadful. The Sioux would have about 1200 penalty minutes if they officiated one of our games.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Is it me or is there a difference between referees in the East vs. West? Eastern referees call hockey games like basketball games; lots of petty "fouls" that put the WCHA teams at a disadvantage.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

According to Brad:

UND is 22-1-2 since the 2006-07 season wearing the black jerseys.

That's crazy.
Great sweep over SCSU. Now go get Mankato!

Yeah, the one loss was in St. Louis against BC at the '07 Frozen Four.

Hopefully Cook cools down a bit from this weekend. Given the talent on the team this year, we should sweep at Mankato. If Minnesota can split with Duluth at home, we'll be atop the WCHA standings at the midway point.

Sioux Recruit Jordan Schmaltz getting some media attention.

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/300737/group/Sports

Schmaltz scored a go-ahead goal and then the game-winning goal in a shootout to help lead the Sioux City Musketeers to a 3-2 win against the Fargo Force
Then Schmaltz picked up his second goal of the weekend with 8:21 left for a 2-1 lead. There’s no doubt the 3,683 fans had mixed feelings about Schmaltz scoring. The barely 17-year-old 6-3, 185-pounder gave them a glimpse of the future ...

Game winning shootout goal for a defensemen! How often does that happen?

The Sioux pick up a recruit from North Carolina:

Men's hockey: N.C. native commits to Sioux
Charlie Pelnik, a 15-year-old standout from Cary, N.C., made visits to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, Boston University, Merrimack and Northeastern before deciding to commit to UND last week.

Not often do college recruiters turn their attention to North Carolina.

That all changed after Charlie Pelnik’s impressive performance at a USA Hockey festival this summer.

Pelnik, a 15-year-old standout from Cary, N.C., made visits to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, Boston University, Merrimack and Northeastern before deciding to commit to UND last week.

The 6-foot-4, 183-pound two-way defenseman — one of the program’s youngest recruits ever — is expected to arrive on campus in 2013 as the program’s first North Carolina native.

“The coaches are definitely the biggest deciding factor on why I chose North Dakota,” Pelnik said. “They are hands down just great, great coaches and great people. They were great players and I think I’m going to learn a lot from them.”

Pelnik plays for the Carolina Junior Hurricanes, a AAA midget major program coached by former Wisconsin defenseman Steve Sabo. Pelnik has been with the program for the last six years, traveling the country to take on top competition.

He didn’t get any college attention until this summer, though.

Pelnik was expected to be a high draft pick in the Ontario Hockey League draft this year, but he said he decided 100 percent that he’s going to college instead. He made his visit to UND over Thanksgiving weekend when the Sioux hosted Notre Dame.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable,” he said. “The fact that they sold out even with the students not in school at the time. . . that was great.”

Growing up in North Carolina, Pelnik became familiar with another former Sioux defenseman, Mike Commodore.

Commodore helped the Carolina Hurricanes win a Stanley Cup in 2006.

“He had his hair going and he was well known in the organization as a funny person,” Pelnik said. “He was an entertaining player.”

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Brad pointed out the key point. He's the youngest recruit since Clarke, who never showed up and has apparently had his own issues.

A lot can go wrong between now and that point where he could first show up on campus. Nice to know that Commie's carrot top is drawing in recruits though. :p

Yeah, any recruit this young I don't get too worked up about. Hopefully he progresses well and shows up on campus in a few years and makes an impact. It certainly sounds like he wants to go the college route, but maybe when he's old enough to drive a car he'll want to go into NASCAR...you just never know with these young commits.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

He is pretty good sized for a 15 year old. Imagine how big he will be when he is 20.

I think we are beginning to see a definate pattern here, where standout hockey players visit the top DI ice hockey schools in the nation, and choose UND over everyone else. Recruits seem to be most impressed with the 1) the coaches, 2) the team, 3) Sioux players playing in the NHL, and 4) the atmosphere at the Ralph.

Interesting that he is being coached by a former Wisconsin defensmen and he picked UND over Wisconsin. Also I had a suspicion that scheduling Notre Dame over the holiday was good for recruiting, especially since Pelnik was also recruited by Notre Dame. Good thing UND won 6-3 over Notre Dame on Friday night. Tough loss for Notre Dame in more ways than one.
