University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

But my concern now is they'll have to hope Simpson (and Mattson) will be willing to play another year of juniors. If Simpson is as hyped up as they say, he may pull a Wiercoch(sp?) and go to say, Wisconsin, a team that has lost some defensemen.

It sounds like Mattson was already planning on returning to the USHL if Genoway returned, so no worries there.
Simpson accelerated, but I'm not positive if he was planning on for sure coming this fall or not. Either way, those rumors about Fienhage going MJ might still happen as well...

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Honestly I think at this point it would probably be in Fienhage's best interests to head north, because all he's going to be doing here is sitting for two years as the "seventh" defenseman.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Notes from the press conference from Brad:

* Genoway said he felt he let his teammates down by not being able to be on the ice at the ned of last season.
* He said that he's extremely excited for next season. He believes that when he's done playing, he'll look back and say that 2010-11 will be the biggest highlight of his hockey career.
* On UND, he said: "This place has always had my heart and my mind."
* He thanked the NCAA for granting him the extra year.
* He said that no doctor has cleared him to play yet, but he's working out and skating. He said he fully anticipates being 100 percent ready come October.
* Genoway also said he wants to finish things the right way and go out on his own terms.
* Coach Dave Hakstol said that he's happy that Chay can finish what he started on his own terms.
* Hakstol said that there's no way to project how the layoff and concussion might affect Genoway, but added that Chay doesn't do anything half way and he thinks we'll see the old Chay Genoway.
* Hakstol said that the team is doing player meetings with recruits and their families. Soon after that, they will know who is coming in next season.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

That's interesting. I thought I read in the medical hardship waiver rule that one of the conditions be that the player already have been cleared by doctors to play. Guess not.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

That is good news. What's even better news is that in order to receive the medical hardship waiver, Chay had to receive clearance from his doctors.

* He said that no doctor has cleared him to play yet, but he's working out and skating.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Glad to hear about Chay...any other news on people leaving? Hopefully they'll all decide to stick around.

It doesn't sound like anyone is leaving this offseason, aside from the rumors about Fienhage possibly going the MJ route to get more playing time with the logjam at defense for next season.

It sounds like for sure Rodwell, Forbort, and Simpson are coming in this fall. If those two dmen arrive and Fienhage departs, that leaves us with this for d-corps:

Genoway / Marto / LaPoint - SR
Blood - JR
MacWilliam / Gleason - SO
Forbort / Simpson - FR

That's a very talented group right there, and two of them would have to sit every night.

This could be one of the best Sioux off-seasons in quite a while! No nervous waiting to see who's moving on. :)

Did you type this while masturbating to a picture of Chay at the same time? Why would the coaching staff split up marto and lapointe? They were the best defensive pair all season, that's a quote from hakstol. Why not put mario in net and eidsness can be the head coach?

so what is your pairings going to be hot shot--
lapoint-marto
blood- macwilliam
gleason-genoway
simpson- forbort
davidson- fienage
thats 10 d-man
and Genoway, mac, blood, lapoint and marto will play almost every game so 5 guys for one spot!! and if forbort and simpson are as good as talked about somebodys not going to be happy!!

His point is valid though. If Marto and Lapoint make a good defensive pairing, why split them up? Plus, you've got great senior experience at the blue line, which could be key to making a push for some serious post-season hardware. The incoming freshmen are highly touted, but they are still freshmen. Rotate them through the lineup to give them playing experience and enjoy the luxury of actually having a strong group of experienced seniors.

Davidson started as a forward, which is where I'm guessing he'll get his playing time next year. And if Fienhage leaves to MJ like the rumors suggest, that leaves only 8 dmen.

Forwards- 15 for 12 spots
Sr- Trupp, Malone, Frattin, Davidson,
Jr- Hextall, Gregiore, Toews, Lamoureux
So- Kristo, Cichy, Knight, Rowney, Bruneteau,
Fr- D.Mattson, Rodwell

Defense- 10 for 6 spots
Sr -Genoway, Lapoint, Marto
Jr - Blood, Fienhage
So - Gleason, MacWilliam, Hill
Fr - Forbort, Simpson
Ok if Fienhage leaves but still there is talk about Nelson coming in too..
nice problem for Hakstol and company to have and hopefully everyone stays healthy, but on the same note kids do need ice time. think where toews could be if he got to play more last year he had 15 points...
do we know for sure if simpson is coming I know he excelled his education?

Schlossman said on his blog that he believes that only Rodwell, Forbort, and Simpson are confirmed for this fall so far.
It has been talked about Nelson coming in, but Danny Mattson won't be coming in this fall. He will play another year in the USHL, as will Nick Mattson now that Genoway is coming back. So that leaves 14 or 15 forwards on the roster, which is pretty common.

On the defense side, you can't count Hill in on the equation, his role is just a walk-on, knowing that he will never see the ice unless it's an exhibition. That leaves 8 or 9 dmen on the roster (depending on Fienhage), which is also common.

I think the roster is looking pretty good for next season. I'm sure Hakstol has it figured out already. :)
