University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

I understand the Portal to a point..but when does this end...this year, another year..?..pretty much a disruptive way to maintain a roster each and every year...and with incoming recruits ...the bigger named schools get to slice and dice the lesser schools[imo]....start to improve team and then bam...you lose one,two or more key players.

It isn’t going to end. The transfer portal is a change the NCAA made. The biggest aspect is that a player no longer has to sit a year. Once there is no penalty to switch then the number of transfers have gone up tremendously.

How does that work for Canadien or for that matter other foreign players on the NIL...because of visas...green card are they not able to benefit from NIL..??

Essentially foreign student athletes can make passive money through endorsements. They can’t make active money. They can’t do anything which requires labor, such as speaking and appearing at events, autograph signings, etc… So anything that can benefit by having the student associated with it. Like LL Bean could have Nadeaus on some ice skates they sell, or some clothing, etc… Or Old Town Canoe could have a version of the canoe called “Boija NC”.

Picking up a gem like Scott is the only hope, but whats the chances.

Isn't that how Maine has typically operated?

Find the unheralded gems that play with a chip on their shoulder because the bigger schools didn't want them. Even dating back to the Walsh days those have been the type of players that Maine has had success with.

Obviously that strategy works best if you're using those guys to round out a roster alongside a few blue chip guys, rather than relying on it solely.

Through the Standbrook days there were plenty of highly regarded recruits. There were some diamonds in the rough as well but Maine certainly didn’t rely just on them.

Thanks for the info. I figured or thought that in a year or so the Covid so called transfer ended and it was back to transfer and sit out....so the bottom line we can expect a musical chairs go round each and every year from here on in. Puts recruiting and knowing your players to a higher standard.

Somewhat right, more so in the last 10+ years without much success. I can't see trying to build a roster on hoping for hidden gems. Filling a gap here and there sure. Theres so much more talent out there now, 50+ nhl draftees in froz 4, a team has to get it and be deep.
Maines problem is the U made bad or no decisions regarding the hockey program following the Walsh era, it fell into disrepair, so now getting high end talent is tough. If they had handled things differently and maintained our advantage from the day we would still be an elite program today, not want to be's.
Yes this season was a great success the fan base is happy with expectations higher for next season.
Now with Barr theres a glimmer of hope, it could take time and be a rough bumpy ride.
Lets see what coach Ben can do with recruiting, his specialty.

I do have a question...pertaining to 5th year players..that must be coming to an end..? That can't be a forever rule..?

Litigation is what brought about the change in transfer rules. The ncaa didn’t have a choice.

This is the final year for the bonus COVID year.

Correct. It's only applicable to players who played during one of the pandemic seasons. There will be fewer and fewer of those going forward.

I think the most important aspect of the whole deal will be whether Maine is viewed as a feeder-school or a destination-school by talented guys in the portal.

My guess is that Maine will fall somewhere in the middle, as far as the short term goes anyway. If they were a feeder school, you'd see more than the three guys, none of whom were key contributors, be in the portal than we have seen. I.e, like Northern Michigan, who has 13 (!!!) players currently in the portal. But if they were a destination, they'd land guys like Wood, et al, which I find very unlikely that they will.

Another high profile player transferring out of Wisconsin. Charlie Stramel is 6’3 and 205 lbs right shot winger that is a NHL 1st round pick. He’s a big body net front type. Not sure Maine has a chance at him but let’s hope so.

Like I do with TSwift, :-)

So something I just noticed, when the team posted the picture of Houle signing his contract, he was flanked by Breen, Breazeale, and Ostman. Today when they posted Ostman signing his contract, he was flanked by Breazeale and Breen. Hopefully this is just a coincidence and because those two are captains, but was something I noticed just now. I'm probably over analyzing, something I can be prone to doing.

I thought same thing when Houle signed. It happens. So if we want the roster to be better it is more likely to happen. That’s why this portal is important to fill in guys that can make up for losses in short term. Let’s just hope Maine can do that.
