University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

From the Lowell thread, some background on Fowler that was deleted from a story in the Lowell Sun:

Yeah, I tend to lurk around all the Hockey East threads, and I read the Sun story shortly after it was posted. From what I remember, it wasn't a fight at all, it was that Fowler got jumped and attacked off-campus in the city, which was later corroborated by Owen's brother on Tw*tter.

Was that the article that the Family was ripped about how everything transpired afterwards..??

On Owen Fowler… the more I read/hear the more it seems we got a Brendan Walsh 2.0. I feel like Walsh had a knee issue that caused him to take a year off. But he was also stout for not being that large, played physical, and was an instigator. Owen appears to have similar playing style. He is described also as elusive and good in transition. I’m hoping for more production on the ice and less trouble off it. Here is an interview that is worth listening to… https://youtu.be/Ax-KjGPoQ-8?si=dR6xpgu6KlxxawgW

I’m a little surprised Barr would want Fowler but must have a strong enough relationship with him to be confident he isn’t going to hurt the culture at all. He certainly is someone who had talent and likely came without using much scholarship money.

There are three or four guys I would have expected to transfer before Pabich and Lindauer so could be a lot of movement. I’m all for kids being able to do what they like but not sure how much it will benefit teams or players.

I personally don't really see the concerns about Fowler, especially if the concerns are about "character". Injury concerns maybe, but by all accounts the kid was the victim of an attack that he did not initiate, there are no concerns in my eyes about him fitting in with the "culture". If I were attacked and seriously injured someplace, I would probably want to move on too. And maybe in Maine's more free-skating system his offense could be better opened up than in Lowell's more defensive and conservative system.

He also played for three different USHL teams which isn’t a great sign. He might be an awesome kid who has had horrible luck but there are certainly red flags.

I hope Barr did due diligence before signing him. I hope it works out. The team doesn't need any Ryan Lomberg type issues.

According to the article I read, his move from Omaha to Sioux City was the latter acquiring him in a trade as a deadline move to gear up for the Clark Cup run, which was ultimately successful as the Musketeers won the championship that year.

Mass kid who models his game after Marchand. Feel like the fan base will warm up to him pretty quickly.

Saw Taylor Makar just entered the portal. He would fill the need of a big body up front, 6 foot 3 and can really skate from what I remember.

Did Barr recruit Taylor? I know he was in on the recruiting for Cale

Yes. But he followed his brother, Cale, there. Cale committed to UMass before Barr arrived at UMass. However, Barr coached the defense there, and coached him both years he was at UMass. So definitely a heavy part of knowing both Makars even though when Cale committed Barr was at Western Michigan University.
