University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

Thanks, I was unaware of this loophole. I guess Niemo can transfer without penalty.
I thought he could have helped on 4th line this year but since he only played a few games I figure he is out of here.

He played in 18 games. But he had only 13 shots. Kind of strange for a guy that lead Bentley in scoring last season. He just wasn’t aggressive in getting shots off and making scoring chances. I hope he gets back to the level he was at prior to this season, whether it is here or elsewhere.

Good Luck to Donny Hockey...smiled at me and gave me a high 5 through the glass when he scored at UNH. Wish him nothing but the best.

Good luck to #11..!..now that Houle has left, what are the odds of Breen staying...50-50...or less...if both leave will be gaps hard to fill...but then That's Hockey..I would think if both leave then it's a good chance that one of those openings may get filled thru the Portal...going to be a very interesting off season.

I would guess he played on every single power play at Bentley snd I don’t remember him playing on any this past season.

also, I remember being infinitely more impressed with Nick at the Colby College game than I was with Scott. Nick was quick, could handle the puck and had moves. Obviously Scott improved and got used to hockey east a lot quicker than Nick.

Yeah, that is a big question. On the one hand, he is a captain with unfinished business and has every right to make up for a loss of a chance at post season play during that Covid year when they could have qualified for ncaa playoffs. He is a smallish type that might have a hard time sticking at AHL level if he doesn’t get the right opportunity. On the other hand, he may be presented with a good opportunity where it could be a gamble if he improves his marketability next year. I was hoping he could get paired back up with the Nadeaus and then Barr adds more scoring depth through portal acquisitions. I think that was the most dynamic line when he was with them. This way they don’t need to sacrifice top line scoring to make a third line that can score. Hopefully Maine can make 3 scoring lines and then have a competitive 4th line from the incoming freshmen and whomever sticks around. Carney is a guy that played well his first year and can add size to the line up. So maybe he naturally slides into the spot Houle vacated.

I’m guessing it is a good sign we haven’t seen a lot of defections. Hopefully this means the players all want to be part of the team and they like it here with Barr and staff. Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks have had 8 and 10 players enter the portal, respectively. I feel bad for those programs and the fans of it.

Apparently Carney had back issues all season. Honestly imo he was just an ok player, not dynamic enough to help bring this team to the next level. Just his size isnt enough of a factor. Due to these back issues maybe he will hang it up.

Owen Fowler is coming to Orono according to Mike McMahon.

Interesting. 5 G, 7 A as a freshman in 33 games. Missed this past season with a knee injury suffered in an off-campus fight. Should have three years left.

I can't say I have any real recollection of him playing for Lowell two years ago. Is this a move to improve the depth and make the third line a bit more viable, or would the expectation be for him to be a top 6 guy and carry some scoring load?

From the Lowell thread, some background on Fowler that was deleted from a story in the Lowell Sun:

Fowler was quite highly touted out of HS (NEHJ had him as the #1 player in Mass), so I'm sure Barr recruited him pretty heavily when he was still in Amherst.

Assuming he comes back without any complications from his injury I would think he could slide right into a middle six role.

Cant say fowler is an oh wow pick. 5'9". Hmmm.
Hurt a knee in a fight. ??

Rumor has it, the incident was more of an attack than a fight. This family had some less than flattering things to say about the City of Lowell. HockeyDB has him at 5'10" and 190 lbs so he's not necessarily small. Seems like a solid pick up to add competition to the lineup.

Hock db and riverhawkscom have him at 5'9", but whats an inch. 190ish is solid.
Theres always circumstances around a fight, but still gives me pause, not Barr though.
Interesting pick to fill a roster spot.

You're right. I was looking at Elite Prospects. 5'9" 190 lb is a bulky little guy though.

Could there be others from Maine entering the Portal...as in Carney,Trudeau...and maybe even Niemo...would Ostman go that route..??

Those are the ones I thought most likely. Pabich as well. He didn’t get much playing time. Seemed he and Trudeau got in Coach’s doghouse somehow.

None of those guys you listed would surprise me to see in the portal, including Ostman.
