University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

Yet no one wanted an arena with more capacity. I hate it when money is left on the table.

A demand for your ticket is healthy. For years there were empty seats everywhere and no energy.

If the wait list sustains itself for a couple years, just raise prices.

People don’t want to sacrifice on atmosphere. A larger stereotypical arena isn’t as loud, the volume dissipates the noise making people less inclined to even bother making noise, which compounds things into a run of the mill atmosphere. Having a unique and loud atmosphere is a strength and a recruiting tool. I think keeping it and upgrading the seating and other interiors along with new lockerooms, workout, etc… is the way to go. To be honest, I’d rather see them add another balcony instead of the skyboxes. But big donors might not like that.

This is exactly why the Alfond > the Whitt

we need a Brendan.

Someone as tough as Brendan and as willing to send a message, sure, but not a forearm shiver to the head guy, like Brendan. Bellamy was just as tough, but not dirty and never embarrassed the Maine fans.
I had no use for Brendan.

and I would love another Prestin! —his 2004 jersey just sold on eBay for $1000…I could not pull the trigger at that price. (Covered in Tony Voce’s spit and blood, I imagine—-I was gonna say Voce’s tears, but Tony gave as good as he got)

The alfond has its charm like you mention but its a lousy facility. Its such a cobbled up affair. Theres so much wrong that cant be fixed, I wont bother trying to list everything.
Its what he have though for the next 25? years just have to embrace it.
Building a new properly designed and located rink was the way to go, but not enough funding. Personally from what I saw of that recent rendering they put together for a new rink, glad they didnt go with that.

To make it more comfortable,as in seating...you need to remove the bench seating and replace with chair backs ...but doing so will reduce capacity ...and by as much as 300 to 400. They will put add on's to the entrance ways and in between here and there...basically band aiding...the only way you see a NEW ARENA(rink)...is some deep pocket or muti-deep pocket donors...and that would be from 60 million to 85 million...my estimate might be far fetched but...but say a 6k hockey rink and everything under the sun won't come cheaply...maybe 75 million would be the ballpark price...so not happening...live with it and enjoy Maine hockey.

Where is a rendering of a new rink? I saw one for new basketball arena but not hockey.

The atmosphere in Snively Arena was always superior to that at The Whitt, at least after the new car smell wore off at the new place, and the more vociferous element of the old arena aged out and/or were discouraged from interacting more loudly. Of course, co-opting the pep band to work against the more raucous elements of the crowd didn't help.

When your time comes for a new facility in Orono, don't let them rob you of your hockey atmosphere in exchange for comfort, just so Mrs. Dean can bring her nieces/nephews to a game once a year without embarrassing her ...

This is a good example. I wonder if ticket prices increased substantially to price out the little guy in favor of corporate types?

It was back in that information last year or two ago with the alfond donation. Not sure its still on the umaine web site. I had a link to some of that early info, will see if i can find it.

You can see Swayman becoming a leader on the team. https://twitter.com/NHLBruins/status/1785504258537783537

His attitude is just move on and next game is our focus and we will be better. Good stuff. Too much energy is spent trying to focus on what went wrong… sometimes the other team just outplays you and if you dwell on it then you start playing not to lose rather than to win. I think Swayman’s head is on straight and we will see him in goal next game too.
