University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Hey, you're just a kid compared to me.

I was there to see the great Rufus Harris tear up the conference waaay back in the day, and the next season Skip Chapelle gave me a couple of lifts to school when I would hitch from Stillwater. Nice guy, funny as hell.

He coached against legendary UConn coach Jim Calhoun when the latter was still at the helm at Northeastern. I remember Calhoun saying : "I knew it was gonna be a long night in Orono when I overheard Skip discussing tee-times with the refs during warmups."

Tough L for Maine at Vermont today, but I love this team. Great to be able to watch them on an off day for hockey.
I doubt I'm a kid compared to you. I grew up in Orono so seeing Rufus Harris was nothing, Try Dick Devarney at QB, or Jack Butterfield coaching Baseball before he went the Yankees. :) The only one on here that makes me look like a kid is acs, that guy is is old :D

Lets hope Maine isn't thinking about PC today(I doubt Coach is going to allow that BTW) , big game today, Maine needs the points and the PWR help. Up to 4th in PWR. Getting Mitton back will change some lines around. Like to see Neimo keep the puck on his stick when he gets to a goalie. He has had some good chances in the last few games but lost puck before he could get a decent shot.

The Freel penalty was an absolute joke. Rouillard always needs to make himself first star with one clown call a game.

Breen is skating. But not taking hard turns. Trying to get his conditioning back. Russell hopefully back against PC that will be a big weekend but not before tomorrow we need those 3 points against Flagship
The one that bugged me was after the sequence where Lesakowski hit the post, then Freel couldn’t sweep it in… Whitehead lost his stick and the puck went into the corner and couldn’t be high enough to have been any sort of hand pass. So it was a fantom whistle when Maine had the puck deep and their goalie had no stick. That was BS.

Yes, it is a habit. Needs work on his poise. He showed off his skill when he won that shootout. Let’s hope he gets one or two and gets some confidence going. He could be a key if he can emerge, which it looks like he can. He’s playing with vigor this year.

I would be tempted to leave Lesakowski at forward and sit Carney for this game if Russell and Califiore are both still out. I didn’t see Carney doing too much, and he had a dangerous play where he turned a puck over at the crease in front of Boija and he had that needless hit from behind. Whereas Lesakowski hit a pipe and had another shift where he took puck to the net and wreaked havoc in front of Whitehead. Had a battle with three NU defenders in front. He also had several solid checks.

Big game today, Maine finishes the season on the road at UMass. So for the series, this game is a must have. Also, Maine has two games in hand with BC. So this is one of those games they can cash in on. If they win this game they trail BC with one game in hand. So would be within striking distance of tied for first in HE if they win today.

Mitton back in playing on the 4th line of Lesakowski/Pichette/Mitton.

Carney and Antonacci both sit.

Dalton in as extra skater. Arnott promoted from extra skater to third pair with Nobes.

Califiore, Russell, Breen still injured.

Coach Barr says key to beating UMass is to get pucks deep and outwork them on the boards. Says UMass is big and can skate well. The term the team has been saying lately is to drag them into the cave and not let them out. A good concept for a blackbear, drag them into the cave and maul ‘em.

UMass 1-0

Lattenback with a blind pass from behind the net to a streaking Connor who one-times it in.

Quick strike after Maine carried the play for better part of the first 10 minutes. That might be UMass’s second shot on goal.

Started well, ended well, after UMass scored they seemed to carry play. I can see what Barr said about UMass, fast and big.

Freel had a great open ice hit right in front of the UMass bench.

Fowler had a nice open ice hit as well on a defensemen looking to go d2d and the hit dislodged him from the puck, lead to more time in the zone and a chance.

Komarov just a whisker from scoring, beat Hrabal clean on a one-timer and clanks far post.

Nadeau doinked the iron also on short side.

Think Maine played good and need just forget the score and keep grinding.

Maine 2-0

Breazealle hustles to keep it in, goes to the net 2-on-1, dishes to Nadeau and Nadeau one touches it in. Nice playmaking by defensemen Breazealle!

UMass ties it at 2 immediately after a 3-on-1 develops, O’Hara passes but hits Boija stick and goes in off deflection. Boija was sprawled out trying to break up centering pass. Ouch.
