University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Tonight on the Coach’s Show Barr said the league talked to him on Saturday and the league admitted they got that major on Mitton wrong, was not a penalty.

What a pile of crap. I said at the time principal point of contact was the shoulder. I'm not saying that's why we lost but not having another skilled skater such as Mitton juggled the lines and likely led to more playing time for people who were not expecting it.

-Ugly turnover lead to the 2nd BC goal on Sunday. Inexcusable given the situation

Tough situation there. Maine defender that had his stick explode never got a chance to retrieve a new stick from the bench or get one from a forward as BC pushed up the ice quickly. He was back there but not an option to pass to. BC had all bases covered as there was a forward that would have retrieved anything back in that direction (he later backed into the slot as the goal was scored and brought the D with him). Gasseau knew it and was coming in and getting the puck either way if he ate the puck or tried to go up the wall. Certainly not inexcusable given the situation. It is what it is.

A no-brainer non-call, even seeing it in real time. That it was a 5 was the cherry on the s*** sundae.

But, college refs regularly suck.

Maybe the influx of money into our sport will somehow trickle down enough to result in hiring more competent zebras, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

(And how 'bout WBB tonight? ESPN + is the best thing around since Al Gore invented the intranet!)

This is the summary, right here. You can't question Maine's effort, or the coaching, or anything like that. These were two hard fought games, both goaltenders played well, but BC had four or five future top 6 NHL forwards and Maine didn't. Those guys are going to make something happen over the course of 120 minutes.

Maine needs to have Bradly Nadeau pan out, and put another couple of guys in the league, to make Orono a viable location for future pros and get that assembly line going. The talent level is miles higher than it was, but we are missing the top end snipers who can create something out of nothing. We can spend all the money in the world on facilities, we can have the fan support back to where it was in the 90's, we can get NIL going, we can have top notch coaching, but until players and their families and their agents can look at UMaine and say "they will get you to the NHL" we'll be a cut below talent wise. Which is fine, after where Maine has been the past two decades having the 8th-14th best team in the nation is amazing. But to be a true top 5 team, that's the next step.

In a nutshell, yes.

Maine just might have a couple of NHL caliber players on the current roster, but it needs a few more to become a destination school, as it was under Walsh (and Tim as well, for most of his reign.)

I'm optimistic that such a thing can happen. I do trust that Ben can pull it off.

A hodge-podge of thoughts.

I think that Maine will rise again as the North Dakota of the East.....with BC/Michigan and BU/Minnesota always having the name, $$$ and location advantages that they have always enjoyed.

Didn't Nadeau score on that line while Mitton was in the box?

The way Maine had been playing....BC needed the "Boston refs" to show up.....and they did right on schedule.

Hockey East loves it when Maine is good ($$$).....but will always favor BC/BU winning the "big game".

Kuzma Voronin signed his LOI yesterday....should be in Orono next season.

Great win by WBB @ URI last night....outscored the Rams 14-7 in the 4Q.

Yes, Nadeau took Mitton’s spot on that line with Makar and Renwick. So somehow a 5 minute major may have actually helped Maine. Though not sure what would have happened if Mitton wasn’t sent to lockeroom.

Also, should add women’s soccer to your list. They went 13-1-3 this year and won the America East Championship. They are now on the road and will face Wisconsin tomorrow night at 8 PM EST in Madison, Wisconsin. I will post a link once I figure out how to stream the game. I will have it on one screen and Maine hockey game on the big tv. Nice to see another sport get to a national tournament game.

Thanks for the good news on Veronin. How about Peter Cisar? Any NLI signed for him or other recruits?

Lets hope Voronin brings Adam Benak with him as well.

Shouldnt y'all be talking about Cooper Flagg and his Duke debut against Kentucky? Tough coupla turnovers for him at the end of the game but they put the ball in his hands when it mattered most. Very impressive for a 17 year old from that hotbed of bouncey ball talent....Newport, Maine.....lol. Not ready to anoint him the next Larry Bird yet, but maybe Christian Laettner ? Kid can play.

Easy to root for Cooper as someone who has close ties to that area.

His mom was one of my teachers in 5th & 6th grade at Warsaw Middle School in Pittsfield right after she graduated from UMaine.

I was very lucky to see some NBA-level talent come out of MCI's now-shuttered prep basketball program, but having someone actually born in central Maine feels a bit more special.

Tonight on the Coach’s Show Barr said the league talked to him on Saturday and the league admitted they got that major on Mitton wrong, was not a penalty.

It was pretty clear that the refs felt they had to call the major

anyone with a brain just knew that BC skater was out for the rest of the season needing knee surgery.

i hope the refs no longer call penalties based on what happened AFTER the infraction that they’re supposed to be reviewing.

now the league either needs to hand down an award for best impression of a soccer player or bench the bc a55 for embellishment

No such thing as a bad win, especially a league win against a rival. But I thought this win was kind of ugly in my opinion, they started to let off the gas again at the end, and they had tons of awful turnovers deep in their own end that Boija either bailed them out on or BU failed to capitalize, or both. And speaking of BU, they were shockingly undisciplined in this game. Not at all what I expected to see from them.

They came into the game as the most penalized team in the country. Their penalty kill hasn’t been good either.

I agree on the turnovers. One was Arnott blind pass behind himself to the BU forward at the side of the net that gets it in stride and wheels out on Boija alone. Why do we have any defensemen playing making blind passes behind himself towards the net area. Gotta just chip it up off the boards if you have to. Another was when we were on a penalty kill and Renwick lazily flips the puck backward trying a D-to-D type pass when he just needed to fire it down the ice. Instead he puts it on a BU forwards tape barreling in full stride on Boija. There was a lot of sloppy play by Maine tonight. Luckily BU handed the game to Maine with all the dumb penalties.

Tomorrow should be a war. Let’s hope Maine cleans up their choices with the puck.

On the flip side though, was very impressed with Fowler tonight. That was his best game. He was close to a hat trick. He’s turned into quite the penalty killer. That short handed snipe was spectacular placement. He had other short handed breakaways too. The pass by Russell to find Freel on the doorstep was so good.

Like to see Maine play solid tomorrow and send BU home with no points. They need punished for the HE semifinal loss last year.

The players and coaches keep talking about how much film they watch in interviews/podcasts. Seems like the film had Fowler ready to read that play like a book.

Always good to beat BU but BU kind of beat themselves in 2nd period. They fell apart big time and I think thats been common for them on Friday nights so far this season. Glad Maine made them pay in 2nd.

Maine kind of fell apart in 3rd. Too many penalties.

It would help if Breen and Nadeau caught fire tonight. Freel camping out on side of net was awesome. Fowler looks like a really good pickup, maybe the best( Djorsevic sp? looks good also) of the players who joined the team this season. Boija held his own, he gives Maine a chance to win.

Going to take a full 60 minutes of good clean play to beat BU tonight.

The old girl was sure fun last night, wasnt it loud with goals 3 and 4.

Refs coulda shoulda called a dozen more penalties on BC, and not called a few BS ones on Maine. Oh well Rouliard likes to be involved.

Maine played the kind of game they had too, pedal to the metal, hard fore check, got to the puck quick and disruptive, good speed entering the offensive zone and forwards covered D pretty well.
Renwick had a great game he was sure a "power forward" last night, tough. Scholle had a good game, as did Fowler of course, Scott as usual, no doubt Boija, and a bunch of others. The D was fairly good but got lucky several times, bad turnovers as already mentioned, going to need several new strong D men next year from the portal or chl.

Im sure liking how Komarov is playing, a great addition, playing with alot of confidence, strength, and mature for a freshman.

Breen and Josh have got to start getting on the scoresheet and stop with the turnovers.
I watched the team practice for about an hour last week and Josh was making some nice scores during the drills. He has the touch.

Going to be a battle tonite, hope the boys slept good last night
