University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Maine was either out of gas, or mental motivation wasn’t there today. Today is more disappointing than yesterday for me.

Reality check weekend. They didn't put away BC on Friday. You need to knock out good teams when you have them on the ropes. That loss took the wind out of their sails today. Absolute BC clinic in the third. We are not on their level yet so it's time to see what these guys are made of next weekend

Call me an optimist, or naive, or a biased homer, but I don't think Maine played badly this weekend aside from the ending of Friday's game. I thought they didn't give up a high number of great chances today, but the ones they did the Eagles were just absolutely lethal. Executed perfectly on their chances they got, especially today. They slowed down in the 3rd for sure, but even then I just really don't think they played a poor game. Losing how they did yesterday is what makes this suck so much in my opinion. Disappointment for sure, and if you want to be an elite team these are weekends you take points from, but I think the difference was the insanely elite offensive talent for BC along with rock solid play from Jacob Fowler.

BC is a better team at the moment with some real high end talent. I’m encouraged by the fact that Maine didn’t look outmatched for large parts of the weekend and probably deserved the win on Friday. Looked a little gassed and out of sorts in the 3rd today.

I’m interested to see how those games go at a neutral site or the alfond.

I'm all for moral victories under the right circumstances but everything we did right on Friday was undone by an absolute meltdown losing a 2 to 0 lead with 10 minutes left. Today was a case of BC knowing they are the better team and Maine losing all the momentum they had on Friday

I don't view it as a moral victory at all, though I will stand by my statement that Maine didn't play badly. If anything, my analysis presents a worse long-term outlook for the team; if they had sucked, you could just say "wow they sucked today, they won't play like that again" and write it off as a fluke. But if you're not playing poorly and still getting zero points, it means you're just not as good as the opponent, which is a problem if you expect to be playing late into the postseason. I still think Maine is a great team, and I still think they can make and win in the postseason, but BC is a better team than them. They'll need to learn to take better advantage of opportunities against elite teams like the Eagles if they are going to also be an elite team.

D1 hockey, losing both games should be a disappointment for the team and the fans. This is still best team Maine has had for over a decade but its not good enough at this point. BC is loaded, I can see DU and BC in the final game come April, that will be a battle. On to BU

You need some elite talent to be an elite team. Boija is looking that way but Maine still needs some offensive guys. Had one last year, he is gone

Might have been nice for him too if he stayed one more year he has less goals then the corpse of Brendan Lemeiux at this point.

Leonard, Perrault, Gasseau, and Fowler were the big difference makers for BC. All NHL draft picks… two 1st rounders, a 3rd rounder, and a 7th rounder. Gasseau seems like a steal for the Bruins in the 7th round.

I don’t think this weekend is a huge deal, BC is clearly a lot better team. Hopefully Maine can get some points next weekend but it looks like BU found their game last night.

Should have been a split but they blew it on Friday. I'm putting this weekend in the rearview mirror.

In other news....UMaine recruit Kuzma Voronin scored as goal and had 3 assists on Friday for Youngstown. The 18 year old Russian looks like the cream of the crop of the verbal commitments that Barr has.

Maine will never get a boat load of talent like BC, BU Denver etc, but with Barr he can put together good teams and you never know what they can steal.
But theres going to be alot more talent in the pool next year.
Maine could lose both games against BU and both against Denver but win everything else.
Im good with things right now, Alfond is fun again.

If anyone is feeling down about Maines performance over this weekend remember that last year Denver was swept 5-2/4-2 on the road in North Dakota. DU also lost 7-3 and 7-2 against #13 WMU. The last time The Black Bears won the championship, they were swept in UNH the last weekend of the regular season in two blow outs.

If there is a time to lose and learn from it, it is early in the season. If there is a team to lose to, its the #2 team in the country with 12 draft picks playing on home ice.

Head up and Roll Bears.

We might as well revive the debate here too on a similar subject. I stand by my comments that the D looks better without Lesakowski. The arguments against me were that it was Merrmiack and they make everyone look fast and it was only one series. Well Merrimack swept UConn so if we were to stand by Merrimack sucks, then UConn really sucks. But the point stands that we have now had two series with Lesakowski out.

With that said I do not see a path forward to Lesakowski being back in. Yes Dalton made some dumb mistakes, there was some bad penalties too, but it was elite competition and they held their own. What do you think Sparkee?

That’s really encouraging to hear. I looked maybe a week ago and noticed that him and Munroe weren’t doing much for Youngstown. I rate them as probably Maine’s two most talented forward recruits so hopefully they get going.

It’s going to be very interesting what next yeas roster will look like. Between old fashioned recruits, transfers, and CHL players there is a lot to consider.

Hard to tell but the results could have been a sweep for Maine if they were at Orono

The energy from the home crowd is often a difference maker

games were tight and in post season anything can happen
