Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

Dahlgren had two things going for it that no other rink had (or ever will).

the seaplane overhanging one end of the rink.
the memorial plaques around the upper walkway.

And the food in the snackbar was the best rink food I've ever had.

I'll see you all of that and raise you one: Armed Marines.

I refereed a number of games at Dahlgren over the years and will never forget the time that Johns Hopkins started a fight in the post-game handshake line. Seemingly out of nowhere, two armed Marines appeared on the ice and took down two Hoppies. End of altercation.

I don't know if a list has been put together of all the universities that have on campus ice rinks that don't sponsor NCAA sanctioned hockey. So, the few that I now off the top of my head are UPenn and Penn State. What are some others? I'll compile the list as we go.

  • Greenberg Ice Pavillion, Pennsylvania State University - University Park, PA
  • Class of 1923 Rink, University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, PA - 2900 Seats
  • UIC Pavillion, University of Illinois at Chicago - Chicago, IL - 6900 Seats
  • KSU Ice Arena, Kent State University - Kent, OH < 1000 Seats
  • McMullen Hockey Arena, United State Naval Academy - Annapolis, MD - 800 seats expandable to 3000 seats
  • University Recreation Center, Eastern Washington University - Cheney, WA - 750 Seats
  • University of Colorado at Boulder - Boulder, CO
  • Boss Arena, University of Rhode Island - Kingston, RI - 2500 Seats
  • ISU Ice Arena, Iowa State University, Ames, IA - 1000 Seats
  • University of Illinois Ice Rink, University of Illinois, Champaign, IL - 1200 Seats
  • Ice Sheet Ogden, Weber State University, Ogden, UT - 2000 Seats
  • University of Michigan-Dearborn Ice Arena, Unv. of Michigan-Dearborn- Dearborn, MI - seats 1500
  • Ossian C. Bird Arena, Ohio University - Athens OH- seats 2000
  • Lindenwood Ice Arena, Lindenwood University - St. Charles, MO - Seats 1000
  • LaHaye Ice Center, Liberty University- Lynchburg, VA -
  • Mediacom Ice Park, Missouri State University - Springfield, MO - Seats 1500
  • Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, Syracuse University - Syracuse, NY - Seats 300 (Note: Has D1 Womens Team)
  • Floyd Hall Arena, Montclair State University - Montclair, NJ
  • Fred Rust Ice Arena, University of Delaware - Newark, DE

How about Underhill Arena (rink) - Bates College - Lewiston, Maine. No D1 or D3. A club team, however.

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

As an Arizona State Uiniversity Alumni, and a good friend of the hockey coach, ASU has been dominate of U of Eh (Arizona) since Greg Powers took over. With that plug over, yes U of A plays at the Tucson Convention Center which is somewhat close to their campus but is a multi-purpose facility. ASU plays at the Oceanside Ice Arena which is a few minutes away driver or long walk from campus.
How did any arena in Arizona end up being named "Oceanside"?

And verboten by the terms of the gift that funded the ice rink from ever fielding an NCAA team.

We've had them for our high school games as well. I told them next time you show up, bring the recruiting sergeant with enlistment papers.

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

With the addition of Pinnacle Bank Arena and the John Breslow Ice Hockey Center in Lincoln, NE, I see. It's worth mentioning that the two facilities are right next door to one another and that Pinnacle Bank Arena only has the piping in the floor, itself, necessary for making ice. The above ground refrigeration equipment is not in place and the wheels have not even been set in motion to procure it, as far as I know. The Breslow Center just opened its doors 3 weeks ago, on December 15th.

and another update since 2011... SFU became the first international NCAA member (DII) in 2012.
The Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby seats 2,000 for hockey, but it's not on-campus.
If you're curious SFU plays in the GNAC, the same conference as UAA and UAF.

Then we redo the WCHA to go Alaska, Anchorage, Simon Fraser, Denver, CC, and Arizona St.

Then we combine and mix the NCHC and the "Eastern" WCHA schools into an NCHC and, (wait for it) CCHA!!

Yeah right. I need to get these delusions checked out!

Except Simon Fraser only has club hockey (which is why they play in a league with Eastern Washington.

SFU played exhibitions vs. BGSU and Miami (State) last year. They weren't very good, but pretty sure they weren't club.

edit: you're correct, they're club in hockey.
