Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

I believe Kent State should be added to the list if they are not and I belive one of he University of Louisiana Schools like Lafayette or Montore have or had some sort of Events/Ice Rink set up,

Not sure which other PAC 12 schools have ice on campus but at USC has the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena seats 14,546 for ice hockey.

Bad news is that there are plans to tear down the stadium and build an outdoor stadium in its place.

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

Delaware's main rink is Division 1 caliber. Liberty says it seats around 2,000+ but it is a weird configuration.

Weird does not do justice to Liberty's layout. In addition to Delaware, Rhode Island's Brad Boss Arena and Navy's McMullen Ice Arena at the Brigade Sports Complex are close to D-1 caliber.

My favorite ACHA arena is the Bird at Ohio U. Small ice surface (185x80), team benches on opposite sides of the ice and fans right on top of the action. I liken it to a smaller scale Boston Garden. Oh, and I get to call the game from a construction scaffold set up behind the visitor's bench.

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

what about the opposite question, D1 hockey probrams/universities without hockey arenas on campus...
Notre Dame... I've been there... what ever that is, it is not a hockey arena, but kudos to them for playing in it.
heh heh heh

U of Arizona has a really good club team, the ice cats, and Northern Arizona used to have Bob Beers, so I bet they have an ice arena

In Lafayette they have the Cajun Dome. The Louisiana Ice Gator of the SPHL play there. At one point, an earlier version of the Gators in the ECHL drew 11,000 per game. In Monroe, where I worked for the WPHL Moccasins, you have the Civic Center which can seat about 5,000. It's a very good place to watch a game. The Moccasins folded after averaging about 2,000 per game. All of the non-fixed equipment relating to hockey has been sold off.

As an Arizona State Uiniversity Alumni, and a good friend of the hockey coach, ASU has been dominate of U of Eh (Arizona) since Greg Powers took over. With that plug over, yes U of A plays at the Tucson Convention Center which is somewhat close to their campus but is a multi-purpose facility. ASU plays at the Oceanside Ice Arena which is a few minutes away driver or long walk from campus.

LaHaye Ice Center reminds me of old style basketball arenas at really small schools from the 40's and 50's. Anyone here see the movie "Hoosiers"? It reminds me of that first visiting court they went to ("that purgatory they call a gym", as Dennis Hopper's character put it).

A facility capable of keeping an ice sheet for starters, then we can break it down. Maybe post seating capacities if available.
Going with that criteria, you could add the Patriot Center at George Mason University, in Fairfax, VA. It is a really nice 10,000-seat multipurpose facility that definitely has an icemaking capability since it has hosted Disney on Ice and other shows in the past. However, I don't believe it has boards and glass (and other hockey-specific stuff) as I can't recall a hockey game ever having been played there. The GMU club hockey team plays its games at off-campus rinks.

Disney on Ice will many time bring their own ice making equipment along. They've done at at St. Louis University's new arena.

all in good time.

Navy ... eventually.

It pains me to have to say this but Navy has spit the bit on a D1-quality hockey venue not once but twice. As I get the story, the original designs for Alumni Hall (where the bouncyball team plays) was supposed to include a hockey capability but this got nixed either by the Academy staff or OPNAV staff--possibly encouraged by basketball interests that didn't want to share a venue with hockey. In recent times, they had a golden opportunity to build at least a minimal D1-caliber venue but wound up with something that's not even big enough to accomodate high school crowds. What a pity. Like Penn State, Navy has always had a strong ACHA D1 club program and could have easily transitioned into a league like Atlantic Hockey, where they could have become competitive and played both Army and AF on a regular basis.

Actually the current facility is easily expandable to 3,000.

So they say but I've been there and 3K would be a stretch. And then there's the lack of amenities. All-in-all, a lamentable missed opportunity.

There's currently temporary bleachers on one side of the rink, but I agree it might be a stretch to put 3K in there. First time we went there we had no internet so I couldn't broadcast. Next two seasons we literally ran a Cat-5 line from the end boards outside to the wifi router on our team bus!

I only wished that I'd been with PSU when they played Navy at Dahlgren Hall.

Was lucky enough to be able to play in Dahlgren when it existed as a hockey rink (on the more recreational "B Team", not the ACHA-1 team). Fun rink in which to play but had some quirks because it was definitely not built to be a rink. The ice was not great and depending on the time of the day, you could be blinded by the sun coming in from the huge windows along the sides of the rink. It was cool to have fans right over the ice, though. Reminded me of being in the first row in the balcony at Matthews.

Been working/overseas too much lately to get to the new arena but I'd really like to see it this season. Seating is limited but expandable. Thought Chet Gladchuck (former AD at BC) was going to be the guy to start up the program, thought the new rink was a step in the right direction, thought hosting the FF was a step towards the limelight, but it's been quiet. Too bad. Would love to root for a D1 Navy team.

Re: Universities with On Campus Rinks w/o NCAA Team

Dahlgren had two things going for it that no other rink had (or ever will).

the seaplane overhanging one end of the rink.
the memorial plaques around the upper walkway.

And the food in the snackbar was the best rink food I've ever had.
