Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Last year it came down to RPI taking out Cornell to get us the Clearly Cup. Assuming a win by us, we need Yale to loose or tie against Cornell. Come-on Big Red !!! Yale is tough at home 7-3-1. The last time they played it went overtime. Union has the tie breaker against Yale with a tie and a win. Another scenario we need is for Dartmouth to tie or loose against Quinnipiac. Dartmouth has the tiebreaker against us. Dartmouth is also very tough at Home (10-3-1). However, on the Road, Quinnipiac is an astonishing 10-1-2 and that loss was just against Harvard. I am hoping Quinnipiac is very upset at the loss. I refuse to contemplate a Union loss after yesterday. I see a Yale win and a Dartmouth tie and St. Lawrence is out with a loss to RPI. Quinnipiac, RPI, Yale, Union get a bye. Union makes it to Atlantic City again, wins the ECAC against RPI after RPI upsets Qinnipiac. Union and RPI advance to the Final 4 and play for the national championship. I see it all very clearly ....

Union and RPI for the national championship? Wouldn't that be a hoot? Amusing however improbable. At least the Dutchmen end the regular season on an impressive note. Playoff hockey is replete with thrills. Can Union regain some of last year's magic? This weekend was a great start! Whatever Dutchman is smoking, send some down here!

Union has not lost at home since January 19 3-2 to Cornell. Since then they are 5-0-1 at home scoring av. 3+ and only giving up av. 1 with two shutouts. In the last 4 home games they have scored 15 pts. and given up 3 pts. Go figure? The Playoffs have a life unto themselves. There are no easy wins anywhere. Quinnipiac crushed Dartmouth in Hanover. No letup there.

Remember the ECAC Pick The Playoffs thread is up and running. You have until 7PM on Friday to get your first round picks in.

Great way to end the regular season. Getting the bye was obviously huge. Already booked a house to stay at in AC so I hope to see U there!

Grabbing the bye was big but even bigger to me was the way Union played this weekend. They were clicking in all phases with the possible exception of the power play v SLU. On the flip side of that is 5 even strength goals in that game, goals which were few and far between during much of the latter stages of the season. Also noteworthy is that we scored in every period of both games, another huge improvement. Troy looked very good until leaving with injury on Friday and what can you say about Colin Stevens pitching a shutout in relief. Vasaturo was on crutches Saturday and his status is a concern. Stuart looked a bit tentative in his Saturday return but with another two weeks to rehab he may be close to par and will be needed.

Also heartening to me was the performance of Kevin Sullivan and his line mates giving us 3 solid trios out there. They will be needed going forward as it only gets tougher from here.

Alli In all plenty of reason to be hopeful but not overconfident. Five top four finishes in six seasons if I remember correctly, a notable accomplishment.

Nolan Julseth-White has been called up to the Providence Bruins of the AHL. He played in today's 7-1 victory over Portland.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Would we not have had the tiebreaker with SLU had they beaten RPI?

Had SLU beaten RPI, they would have finished with 2 more points than they have now, with 24. You go into a tie, same ECAC wins, comes down to Top 4. You have 4 points on us to their 2, you have 0 points on QPac to their 2, Yale you would have 3, SLU would have 0. You would indeed have won the tie-breaker. However, if you threw Dartmouth into the mix, it very well could have been a different story.

Helps our pairwise chances, though.
Exactly, the only reason U has even a sniff of an at-large NCAA is because of RPI becoming a TUC.

Correct, and if there had been a 3-way tie Union would have been seeded 6th, so thank goodness RPI and Quinny beat teams they should have beat .. Seriously though, congratulations to RPI on an excellent second half season. Appert and company did a great job turning things around after a couple disaster weekends in November. Deserves serious COTY consideration in my book.

Thank you much, and some credit should also go to you guys, since by the end of the season, we became the toughest travel partnership. Good luck in the playoffs (unless you face us, of course), and we'll see if we both can make the tournament again.

If I've got it straight the only way we could meet up again would be in the finals at AC, and that would be a very good thing for both teams.

If QU wins and Yale loses in the quaterfinals, we would meet in the semis.

Like RFAlph said, either semi or finals. My point against Dutchman's claim was specific to Union meeting RPI after RPI had defeated Quinnipiac. Union would have to defeat Quinnipiac and RPI defeat Yale in order for RPI and Union to meet in the finals. Of course, it could also happen if Quinnipiac somehow lost in the quarters (after losing to Harvard, actually wouldn't be all that surprising).
