Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

In advance of Friday's game against St. Lawrence, I chatted with Saints assistant coach Kris Mayotte, a goaltender at Union from 2002-2006.

Mayotte discusses his budding coaching career, his time at Union, St. Lawrence star Greg Carey, Friday's tilt, and more.

You can listen to it on my blog or via this hotlink.

2014 recruit Michael Pontarelli scored his 50th goal of the season tonight.... in his 50th game. Has 99 pts overall.

Nobody else in the CCHL even has 40 goals (second highest is 37).
I don't recall ever having such a high scoring recruit coming in, we used to go after the under the radar sorts who could develop under the coaching staffs' tutelage. I guess it's ok to start worrying about whether MP will actually show up in August of 2014. ;)

First thing he needs to tell the goaltenders, "If you come out of your net to play the puck on a power play and let in a shorthanded goal, don't do it again." :D

Did you really need to go there?

Pete Dougherty (Times Union), Mike Ashmore (Trentonian) and Rich Chere (New Jersey Star Ledger) discuss ex Union stars Keith Kinkaid and Kelly Zajac. Both received promotions within the organization this week.

Welsh re-assigned back to AHL Charlotte. Recently got into three NHL games (0 points).

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Crunch time. Two points are needed for a home ice playoff series (who woulda thought that was a concern a few months ago?), so let's take care of that tonight. I'm really hoping the offense kicks in with Simpson being back, but most of all, I want to see that suffocating forecheck that was their staple last year. Offensive chances come from stuff like that.

Tough break for the Saints with Flanagan being out...here's hoping he'll be ok and back on the ice soon.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Flanagan's illness is unfortunate for SLU. I just hope his absence doesn't give the boys a sense of false confidence. With Cary and company this is still a very dangerous team. I am told by those who should know that U played two of its best periods of the year the last two at Cornell, so let's hope that they pick up where they left off. Full 60 minute efforts seem to be few and far between this season for some unknown reason, but this squad is still more than capable of beating any team when they come to play.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Vasaturo is "doubtful" to return tonight after lower body injury in first period.

He scored Union's first goal.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

A high energy all around spanking of a very good team, exactly what the doctor ordered. Speaking of doctors the only damper was injury to Grosenick and Vasaturo. Are we in 4th now with tiebreakers ? I wish we could have played all season with this kind of effort but better late than never. No let up tomorrow I hope.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I think Dartmouth has us on tiebreakers in the current 3 way tie for fourth.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Bennett offered little in the way of the status updates on Grosenick and Vasaturo.

He said both are hurt and are "very questionable" for tomorrow.

He offered "no comment" on what happened to Grosenick.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I think that was the type of game we've all been waiting for. Granted, SLU wasn't at full strength but Union looked dominant for a good portion of the game. I wouldn't expect to see Grosenick or Vasaturo tomorrow based on Bennett's comments.

When you factor in the injuries, a win over Clarkson is crucial if Union can receive a bye. The week off will give Stuart, Vasaturo, and Grosenick time to heal. Anything is possible if the boys can "stick to the process" and keep the momentum up. Let's go U!
