Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Talk about being left scratching one's head..the 2013 edition of the Dutchmen is tough to understand. Obviously there is a component missing that is bigger than three conspicuous departures from a national championship caliber team. We probably will never know. Sometimes it just aint in the stars.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Does not compute. Other than the occasional half-hearted "Let's go U", Messa is about as lively as the Morgue.

They don't even do "Let's Go". They just do a ****poor attempt at trying to hi-jack Let's Go Red. We've tried to give them practice, but they just suck at it. :p:D

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Cornell Women's Team had 2182 for the game v. Harvard last weekend.

OK, so you can get people to go to a rivalry game; heck Union can only sell out AND fill men's games to standing room brim when you or us are in town. How has the rest of attendance been? I didn't get a chance to go to Cornell/RPI because it was Freakout.

Perhaps Union misses Nate "No Comment" Leaman more than they thought.

Have you actually been to a game at Union? That's not the main cheer...not even close.

As for the team, I think the word "enigmatic" comes to mind. No, they're not what they were last year. We should have stopped expecting that in October. I think we've detailed the issues in the past - missing scoring chances, which lead to gripping...make that strangling...the sticks, the goaltending not playing up to par, and a very young defense that apparently misses Shawn Stuart an awful lot. Combine that with some questionable lineup decisions, you have inconsistency.

I have to agree that scratching Simpson last night was quite bizarre. Unless he said something or did something inexplicable off the ice, then I didn't see any reason for it - at least not in late February. I'm all for coaches sending a message, but not now. The occasional pulling of Grosenick mid-game seems strange, too. Perhaps Bennett should have given Troy the game off in Canton, the night after he pulled him against Clarkson, instead of leaving him in to suffer the carnage in that first period.

This is in no way to put the blame on Rick Bennett...the players have to be accountable. After a sweep of Yale & Brown, which followed getting swept at Clarkson & SLU, you'd think they would have turned the corner and started to realize that 120% effort is needed every game. I look to the guys on the ice (the Bodie brothers, Simpson, Jooris, & Carr) to step up into the leadership role and take charge. Someone mentioned missing Nate Leaman...I think we're starting to miss Nolan Julseth-White and Kelly Zajac a lot more now.

Attendance has been pretty solid (about 2000-2100 per game), but it's not the same atmosphere when the student section shows up. They're definitely not the Lynah "crazies", but when section Q is full, there's a good buzz around the rink.

That was directed at 40-year with regards to Cornell's women's program. I'd go to their thread, but Cornell thinks they're too good for USCHO that they made their own message board.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I obtained some clarification regarding Bennett's comments about sitting Simpson - it was because Simpson hasn't scored a 5 on 5 goal since the Penn St series.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

This post is extremely hard to make, because at the end of the day these are student athletes, most of whom are paying something to play and go to school here.

Bennett picked the wrong guy to sit last night, if anyone it should've been Jooris. He's been way more unproductive and he takes at least one boneheaded penalty a game. He should've sat after the penalty he took that led to the second Colgate goal on Friday.

This team needs to decide during practice this week whether they want to make a run through the playoffs like they are capable of, or if they want to pack it in and hit the golf course two weeks from now. When this team is on they can beat anyone in the ECAC. For whatever reason they haven't played a complete game since the win over Harvard back in November. Losing Welsh and Zajac hurt, but I think losing Juice hurt just as bad. I'm not in the locker room so I don't know, but I think the leadership those three guys brought to the table is what this team is missing the most. Welsh was an amazing player, but he also had that special will to win that I don't see anyone on this year's team having. The goal he scored against Harvard in Atlantic City is a perfect example, you could tell as soon as he picked the puck up in Union's zone that he was going to score.

Ken Schott raised another possibility last night that maybe this team has simply just tuned out the coaching staff's message. While I dread to think there is any truth behind this, there are also troubling signs that maybe this is in fact the case. All the hallmarks of "Union hockey" which made this team so successful are no longer present. The tenacious forecheck is spotty at best, the dominance in board battles is gone, and you rarely see anyone in the dirty areas in front of the net on either end. Union always used to wear teams down as the game went along, now it's game over if the opponent survives the first period.

It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks plays out, but it's hard to be optimistic at all. It's always possible this team could go on a run in the playoffs, as much less talented teams have in the recent past, but I just don't see the drive to succeed that those teams had.

Seems like this is more of a return to "Union hockey" than anything. Maybe the last couple of years were an aberration? The only thing "Union always used to" do is lose first round playoff series.

Not too good...just too obsessed: need lots of sub-threads.

elynah is (generally) friendly to posters from other schools, as long as the post is respectful. RPI and Clarkson has some semi-regular posters.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Former Union goaltender Keith Kinkaid has been recalled by the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. Kinkaid, who had been with Albany of the AHL, has yet to see NHL game action. But it's worth noting that New Jersey starter Martin Brodeur is day to day with a sore back.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

According to Watertown Daily Times reporter Chris Fitz Gerald, SLU will be without Kyle Flanagan for the next 7-10 days following an appendix removal. Flanagan has 42 points in 31 games and SLU is at Messa on Friday.

I appreciate the kind words on the blog!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

2014 recruit Michael Pontarelli scored his 50th goal of the season tonight.... in his 50th game. Has 99 pts overall.

Nobody else in the CCHL even has 40 goals (second highest is 37).

Video of the 50th goal -
