Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Sadly, that's true. But it's too bad it's that way.

I think the only college where the women outdraw the men is Mercyhurst, and much of that is due to the fact that Erie PA also has a Major Junior team, not to mention the Mercyhurst women's program is fairly strong. I've really enjoyed the women's game, even if it is strictly skating fundamentals and no checking. Sadly, hockey has a reputation for violence, and when you strip that away, the casual fan doesn't want to watch. I remember a sizable (at least at Colgate standards) contingent of the Colgate student body behind me a couple weeks ago, and let's just say that many were disappointed when I had to explain that some of their chants were unfounded because there's no checking in women's hockey.

Yes it was Friday night and while on the topic can we we let pass the U, Red, Knights, sucks, etc. ? IMO it's really getting tiresome and I have to say disrespectful as well.

I'd love to see this end, but I doubt it will happen. It's almost become too much of a tradition for everyone to stop it now.

Returning to The DutchMEN...Watching Cornell and Dartmouth left this writer with the impression that, inspite of their record, Cornell was impressive. The game exhibited a tenor that suggests Union is in for a real battle this coming weekend. The boys from Ithaca are looking for some redemption. Of course, Union is out to prove something also. Hopefully last weekend was not just a dead cat bounce.

I don't want to read too much into this weekend's games but maybe U has finally turned the corner and can build some momentum at season's end. I agree that any win over Brown is a big one, the same for Yale. Maybe part of the difficulty in dealing with these two teams back to back is that they have such completely different styles and identities. Also, so far as Yale is concerned they were playing with second and third goaltenders, still Union had one of its best overall performances against them. In addition to finally getting some "puck luck", most significantly, Troy put together two back to back big games. He is the single most important player on the team who at peak performance gives us a chance to beat anyone. The team is not strong enough offensively to win consistently without him at his best.

A lot was made of the "as Wayne Simpson goes, so Union goes" statistic. That was put to rest last night against Brown, when Union won it's first game of the season without Wayno picking up a point. Also the Novak, Sullivan, Hatch line finally is getting it together and was the most effective line on both nights.
I'm hoping so too. Grosenick was definitely the difference in both games this weekend and agree that his continued rise is key. It does look to me that the lines are getting more set and starting to gel, and is very good to see the so called 3rd line chipping in with some big goals. The 4th line is also starting bring consistent havoc and the boys have been doing pretty well in the faceoff dot. I think U is becoming a very difficult team to play.. though the PK has been surprisingly average lately and its anyone's guess if the offense has really turned the corner. I'm still not sure if this team has a deep playoff run in them, but would definitely like to see a 2nd round series at Messa. Another couple big weekends to go!

A ceremony was held at Schenectady City Hall earlier today in honor of Union winning the inaugural Mayor's Cup.

Union beat RPI, 3-2, on Jan. 26 to capture the cup.

Members of the Union community presented the cup to Schenectady mayor Gary McCarthy. Players Kyle Bodie, Greg Coburn, and Mat Bodie were in attendance. Additionally, head coach Rick Bennett and Union College president Stephen Ainlay were also present.

Here's the video I took -

Biggest two games of the year this weekend. Union is somehow in the NCAA as of now but certainly on the bubble. After underachieving for most of the year there is now a chance to step up, get hot, and go on a run - you see it all the time in NCAA hoops. 4 points this weekend with some continued top shelf goalkeeping will tell me the team is for real. Too many easy / bad goals given up so far this year. Only real question still remains - other than on the PP - where will the offense come from? To say they miss Welsh is an understatement.

Go U!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Was last weekend permanent? Colgate is very tough at home, 10-5, and they have some players returning from injuries. They can score. Cornell always gives Union fits especially at Lynah. Last year Union was a road team. Not so this year. Has Union developed the leadership to step up and step out under pressure? Will the fore checking we saw last weekend show up? Earlier in the year I saw Union play Harvard. The Union team that showed up the the third period of that match needs to return full time. I just don't know. Will find out in an hour. Go Dutchman !!!!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

With a chance to solidify its hold on a bye position Union shot itself in the foot with a seemingly lackluster effort. Early goals in the first and second periods, sputtering offense, penalties and the PK all seemed to contribute to our demise. Didn't see the game and have not read any reports so details are sketchy. What is clear is that with a similar effort tonight we will have major problems and can fall precipitously in the standings. Time to rally the troops.

Even if they fall far in the standings, they could easily jump right back. With so many teams so tightly packed from 2nd to 11th place, 1 win can be a jump right back to where they were the night before....thus is life in the ECAC.

That said, it sounded Ike Union had some good pressure and were a step ahead of Colgate last night, but penalties and playing short-handed wore them down as the game went on. Penalties....bad.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Colgate scored more PP goals last night (2 for 5) than in their previous four games combined (1 for 19).

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Colgate is a very streaky young team that with their "A" game can beat anyone. You guys controlled the first period but Gate took over at about the ten min mark of the second. I thought we got some questionable calls also. Union is a very good team, as we know though in the ECAC every game is a "crapshoot". Don't be down on them, "Ghost" can fly, very impressed with him. Our frosh are tremendous.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Agree that the Colgate freshmen are very solid and based on performance to date, there are a bunch of ECAC teams with freshmen who have outperformed ours. Though I haven't given up on the group by any means I am concerned about what this could mean looking ahead especially in view of the losses graduation will be causing this season.

One thing I did pick up from Matt and Brian on radio is that the team looked gassed in the third, not sure why if they are in fact correct, but I know generally we have few if any wins when starting he third period behind. There will be no rest for the weary tonight.

By the way it was pretty amazing and good to see Goulakos back on the ice, and he was a big factor.
