Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Lots of long stretches of exciting play tonight. There have been some tight, nerve-racking games between these two teams the last few years, and we'll probably see another one at Lynah. Until then, good luck to Union. They are a very good team and I'm sure their fortunes will improve.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Needless to say, Rick Bennett was not pleased when he spoke at the post game press conference. He was about as steamed as I've heard him.

I'll have much more later tonight, including all the post game press conferences from both teams.

Remember Jeremy Welsh? It looks like he's made the Carolina NHL roster, at least that's what I was hearing at Messa tonight.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Another day another collapse, I can't really add anything on that front that hasn't been said.

However, that was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in a while. Schafer must have premptively told the ECAC he was "never coming back" just like he did after the Denver series, because that was a horribly officiated game. The sequence before Cornell's second goal involved M. Bodie receiving a flying elbow to the head from DeSwardt, and then Bardreau had Ghost pinned to the ice in the slot, neither got called and the puck ended up in the net. The Ghost embellishment call was a joke, McCarron did two things on that play that should've been called but Ghost got a phantom embellishment call at the end...unbelieveable. Don't get me wrong, Cornell dominated Union in the second and the third, but the way that game was called was mind boggling. The embellishment call added on to an actual penalty trend that has been happening throughout hockey lately is embarrassing. It's either a penalty or embellishment, don't call them both or better yet just don't call anything at all.

Seventh straight game where Union scored all of their goals in one period. This has happened in 8 out of the last 9 as well.
It's either a penalty or diving... embellishment can only be called as a matching penalty...

Bennett on taking penalties, which he said can wear a team out:

"It's the same guys taking the same penalties and that is going to stop. Guys are going to be sitting up in section P with their sport coats on and we don't care who it is."

If you only watch one, watch the Bennett presser.

The lockout actually helped Jeremy. He was able to develop at the AHL level and has to be game ready in terms of conditioning. I hope he stays but I would guess that he may go back down once the vets get their legs though the compressed schedule may keep him there. Interesting also that Juice gets a promotion along with K Zaj all in the same week. Just shows how much we lost this season when these guys moved on.

Julseth-White wasn't one of those guys who showed up in box scores often, but it seems like his leadership is missed in times like this. Despite being a first year player, he could have captained his ECHL team this year, his coach there told me. That speaks volumes. A couple years ago, Union had another good leader in Brock Matheson. I'm not sure who that leader is this year.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

The Dutchmen have released their lines for tonight's game with Colgate and there are several changes.

Ryan Forgaard rejoins the defense at the expense of Charlie Vasaturo. Forgaard is paired with Tim Boyle. The other two defensive pairings remain the same as last night.

As expected, defenseman Shawn Stuart remains out with an upper-body injury.

Nick Cruice rejoins the lineup, replacing Sam Coatta. Cruice will be at right wing in a line centered by David Roy with Cole Ikkala at left.

Several forward lines are shuffled. The only forward line intact from last night is the Matt Hatch - Josh Jooris - Kevin Sullivan line.

Julseth-White officially debuted in the AHL last night. Didn't get any points, but had 2 shots and a holding penalty for San Antonio.

Good turn around performance last night despite a few hiccups. Not yet hitting on all cylinders but we could be close. Grosenick looked very solid, big improvement in faceoffs and good energy level in the third. I am still scratching my head over the embellishment call on Ciampini. Are you not allowed to fall when hooked or tripped? Horrible call but fortunately did not effect the outcome. Must grab two points on Tuesday v Crimson to solidify hopes for top four finish and with closest foes having games in hand. I'm a little worried about Ghost possibly wearing down. He's been running on fumes with the WJC and has been getting a lot of ice time plus he's not the biggest of D men. Being 19 can't hurt though.

The Dutchmen were begining to remind one of the frustrations of lighting a fire with damp wood. After the kindling and newspaper provide a nice blaze, the fire fizzles. Saturday night they finally got the fire going for three periods. That was a desperately needed win after the blown leads of late.
Perhaps this team can take a page out of the Ravens' playbook. After their swoon they came back with a vengeance.
On paper Harvard looks like a "W", which, as we know, means nothing in college hockey. A resurgent RPI poses a tall order. Should be an interesting week.

Unfortunately, Union has been on this slump. I was really hoping that we'd be facing a cocky Union team. ;)
