Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

The game against Quinnipiac in a couple weeks has gotten a lot more intriguing lately. A few weeks ago, Quinnipiac's stock looked to be down following a couple really bad losses (2-1 to AIC, 2-0 to Acadia). They were also blanked 4-0 by Robert Morris, a middle of the pack Atlantic Hockey team. But now Quinnipiac is 4-0 in league play and look like a force to be reckoned with. Their +11 differential in goals for/against in league play is tops in the conference. Union is second (+9). I was surprised by some of QPac's early struggles (I believe I picked them 4th in the conference) but they're playing more to expectations lately. It's set up to be a big game at Messa on 11/30.

I'm not sure what to expect from Penn St this weekend. I don't know a whole lot about them yet, but Bennett said last week he expects up tempo games. Union is easily the best team they've faced up to this point, so it will be a real test for PSU. Union should be favored to sweep, but PSU might sneak up on them a little bit.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Have to think Penn State will be pumped for these games. Union will be the first ranked team Penn State plays in their history.

If the trends from this season continue, I think Penn State will be in trouble because of the amount of penalties they take. PSU is the second most penalized team in the country, and their penalty kill is only middle of the pack. Hopefully Union learned their lesson against UConn to not look past anyone, because Penn State looks much better than I personally expected them to be at this point.

If Union does what they should, then Dutchmen will pick up four points this weekend. Like coach Bennett however, I hate the word should when it comes to hockey because you just never know. It will be an interesting weekend for sure.

The biggest thing I think we learned about Penn State is: Don't overlook them. Remember that Gadowsky is the coach, so he knows your program and how it has come to the way it is. After losing to Buff State, they turned around and beat RIT in front of 10,000.

Is Denver aware that Gwozdecky is coaching at Penn St.?

And after losing 5-1 to Air Force on Friday night they turned the score around on the Falcons the next night.

Definitely this is the biggest test for the Nittany Lions. They realized against AF that they can compete at this level, but Union brings the challenge to a whole new level.

Should be fun - we hope! ;)

Speaking of Gadowsky, does any one remember a few years back when he came in with Princeton and went after Mike Harr with a few expletives from the bench? As I recall, he called him "chicken***".

Unfortunately, it's what I always think of when I see Gadowsky. Not only was it was pretty out of line to yell at a student-athlete like that, but you could hear it loud and clear all the way across the rink from the benches. I've always loved Leaman's "I can't touch that" response to Schott's question about the incident.

Michael Pontarelli had a natural hat trick in Cornwall's 11-1 win over Kemptville tonight.

And a nice building it is! Just have to be careful standing up in the broadcast booth.....those oak beams could do some damage to the old coconut! ;) I might have to borrow a helmet.
Shhhhhh!! Don't say that too loudly.. don't you know Messa is the worst rink in the history of college hockey.. just ask any RPI fan ;).
