Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Not sure how great a coach Gaudet is. With all of the talent moving through Hanover including successful NHL players, Dartmouth has accomplished very little in postseason play.
Well Gaudet may not be a great coach, but I do think he is a good one. The Big Green were putrid for about 20 years prior to his taking over and he even won at Brown (no small feat). Most of his NHL caliber players have been forwards and most of his teams didn't quite have the depth of talent or d-men/goalies to take the next step in post-season, which points to the challenge of recruiting at an Ivy not considered one of the hockey powerhouses like Cornell or Harvard. His teams always have size and play hard 2-way hockey that Union has had some trouble with over the past 3-4 seasons. I'd put Vaughn at Colgate in a similar category - some years has the horses and some years not, but his teams are always tough to play against.

Wow!! You seem to be a critic of certain coaches!!!!! From post #284 where you said "Donato is still their coach and IMO that's a problem". Now you don't think Gaudet is a "great" coach.
Just curious as to what makes you such an expert on who is a great coach and who isn't?
I guess you have to be from Troy or be an RPI fan to be an "expert".. maybe you experts should figure out what's going with RPI's coaching these days.

Not from Troy......do not claim to be an "expert"............ and I agree with you 100%!!

Has anyone here ever had a problem getting tickets for a Union game AT Cornell? Apparently, they have this asinine ticket policy where they don't sell tickets until the Thursday the week of the game and even then in person purchases get priority over phone/online sales. I was thinking about going with some family I have out that way, but it's a little hard to plan ahead with a policy like that.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Check with Kathee in the Athletic Office. They might have a block of tickets for us.

Typically your box office is provided a block of tickets (normally Section O), and they then return tickets that haven't been sold. I would very much recommend going through that way.

Just be glad you only have to deal with the Cornell ticket office once per year...one of the worst in the ECAC, for sure. Sorry about that. :(

Up to 7th in both polls after a 1-1 weekend. A bit surprising to me. Another pleasant surprise is that Ken Schott reports that Troy Grosenick's MRI of his injured leg was negative and he is "day to day" rather than 3 or 4 weeks.

Ken Schott with information on a new recruit:

The Union hockey team has received a commitment from Deerfield senior center Alex Gonye.

Gonye led Deerfield in scoring last season with 18 goals and 15 assists in 25 games last season. The 18-year-old Gonye is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. He shoots left.

U.S. Hockey Report said the Gonye has skill to spare and decent size. But for Gonye to take his game to another level, he will need to add "some consistency and grit to go along with the skill package."

NHL Central Scouting recently released a list of players to watch for the 2013 draft. Gonye was listed as a "C skater," meaning he has 4th-6th round potential.

Seems like a nice get from afar.

Goyne looks like a pretty solid pickup. It will be interesting to see how his numbers improve in his final season at Deerfield.

USHR had Goyne as their 40th best junior in high school/prep hockey last season, one spot ahead of 2014 Union commit Ryan Scarfo.

40. Alex Goyne, F, ’94 (Deerfield/Uncommitted) 6-1/175—New Canaan, Conn. native has a lot of skill, but has to play with more pace and consistency. Scoring nearly a goal per game and we feel there is even more in the tank.

Video from Saturday is up on the ECAC website.. Dartmouth's 3rd goal was a team-wide bad mistake by Union. Everyone stopped skating waiting for the period to end, Dartmouth throws the puck at the net and jams it in.

After watching the video I'm really looking forward to the rematch. Their second goal materialized when a d-man slipped in the offensive zone leading to an odd man rush and the third goal was a an uncharacteristic lapse. Not saying that Dartmouth didn't deserve to win, but we kind of handed it to them. With Bodie and Grosenick both likely available the visit to Schenectady will hopefully have a different outcome.

From the opposing (biased) perspective, you could make similar arguments about both of Union's goals. If both Sikura and Keenan don't fall down on the first play maybe they don't score. Similarly the second goal came as a result of an awful turnover by a freshman playing in just his second collegiate game and by the time the rematch rolls around he doesn't make that mistake again. Also if you watch the second goal again it ended up basically being a 3 on 3 with Robinson beating his man to the far post on a nice pass from McNally.

Nevertheless, also looking forward to any future games against Union in the future as Saturday's game was evenly matched as well as entertaining to watch.

Good luck and health to your team until February!

Check out Michael Pontiarelli's goal from tonight (click on the video tab, sixth video from the top). The kid has some real nice moves, it's hard not to get excited for his arrival. If you have the time browse some of his other goals from this season. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but he looks like he's going to be a great player in the ECAC.

From the ex-files... Schott reports former recruit Andrew Johnston has been demoted from Adirondack (AHL) to Trenton (ECHL). He had one goal and no assists in 10 games for Adirondack.

Following an off weekend, Union slips from 7th to 8th in the USCHO poll. They remain 8th in the USA Today poll.

I wasn't too surprised to see Johnston demoted. I think he could have used a season or two to develop at the college level but he got hot at the right time last season and jumped ship. Adios.

The weekend was a strange one again in the ECAC. Qpac and Colgate are seemingly the hot teams now with Dartmouth and Cornell on the wane. Trends in the league seem to last at least a week.

Meanwhile on the home front, the two games this weekend may be more competitive than I initially thought when I looked at the schedule. PSU has played very well for a first year D1 program and obviously has some talent and we know Gadowski is an effective coach from his days at Princeton. PSU is also a TUC so these games have added significance. Let's hope the boys are locked and loaded (and not with turkey ;)).
