Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Side note: Now that we have an Albany-area team guaranteed to be in the semifinals and Cornell favored to advance, maybe Mr. Hagwell should take notice about the location of the championships. :p

*facepalm*

Ideally, if you want the best attendance in Albany, you need RPI, Union, Clarkson, and Cornell in the finals, and preferably with RPI playing Union in one of the games in order to make sure you guys show up. :p Three of those teams consistently made it to Lake Placid, which is why the tournament was so successful there (along with the charm factor). Unfortunately, as has been found out when Kinkaid played his first game at the TUC as a professional, the TUC is not very accommodating to hockey events. Quite frankly, I think that's one of the biggest reasons why they moved.

You really need to find a good hockey town to have the championships. I'd assume Glens Falls is too small (not to mention, good luck driving through there).

And has been mentioned every time you bring this up, they host the NYS HS Basketball Championships next weekend.

Every single time I mention it, I keep forgetting. One of these days, I'll remember.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

My short take as follows. Union's earlier edge this season over RPI was based on special teams and goal tending. Obviously RPI has shored up both areas, but they do seem to take a lot of undisciplined penalties according to the reports I've seen. I think RPI's goaltending is less of an issue than it may have been earlier on (or maybe it's just their improved defensive play) and Union's recent special team performance, both PP and PK have been somewhat sub par. I am sure the U coaching staff has been working on the PP to get it back to what made it successful, moving the puck quickly, getting the puck down low and firing away. Throw in U's well documented postseason woes, and I'll be doing some nailbiting this weekend. I will say this, however, Rick Bennett is a coach with his own style and methodology. For whatever reason, Nate as great a coach as he was and is, could not by and large get his teams to perform up to their potential in the postseason, and I have no idea why. I have a feeling that Rick Bennett's persona may be more conducive to post season success. I have zero empirical evidence of this, but that hasn't stopped me from opining before.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

I'm glad the Union faithfull are wary of this RPI team, but I doubt that the Union team fears RPI.
I was responding to a Cornell poster who thought that the Red got an easier opponent in Dartmouth, and I didn't say that Union fears RPI.. in fact I don't think Union fears much of anyone at this point. But I do think that Union's coaches and players know that RPI has been much improved over the last month of the season and are expecting much closer games than the previous ones. In the last RPI game in Schenectady, U got an early lead and you could see the body language sag in the RPI players.. they looked like they knew they could not come back. I'm not expecting that this time because; A) RPI has more confidence from their recent successes and; B) it's the playoffs and there's more motivation to give 110% every shift.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Union-RPI series should be fun. I'm not sure what I really want as a Cornell fan (assuming we take care of our own business). A Union Cornell final would be great (though I'm not sure the Union attendance would be fantastic) but the only scenario I can see Yale becoming a TUC and helping Cornell's seeding would be for them to make the final which would have to involve RPI winning this weekend. So either way as a fan of the game I guess I can't see a bad result (so long as Cornell is AC, which I assume you want because you have to beat the best to be the best). Either way, given how great the game at Lynah was, I'd love to watch another game against Union. Especially if they bring out Rodger Craig's hands again

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Yes, but remember that if RPI wins it all, they become a TUC by virtue of their autobid, and by going either 0-1-1 or 0-2-1 (Depending on how you do vs. Dartmouth), it hurts you guys even more, not to mention you'd have to fight for one of 14 slots instead of 15.

I thought they changed that rule (auto-bids automatically become TUCs) because of the situation with Bentley a few years back.

They become a TUC by virtue of their autobid ?????

Standing room only tickets at Messa: Is it worth it? Can you see the game?

When I get edgy I actually go down to the standing area to be right on top of the action. You can generally get within a few feet of the glass. It's a great view when skaters are near, obviously, not so great when they are far. There are also some areas on the bleacher landings where you can stand and have a good view. Parking is going to be an issue, but there is an overflow lot on campus on Nott Street and Terrace Lane, just up from Seward Place. I've never seen it full and it's only about a 5 to 10 minute walk to the rink. It's actually advantageous getting out of there after the game.

If the Watering Hole doesn't have Time Warner Cable, then the game won't be on.

Most watering holes (or at least the ones around here) get both Time Warner AND DirecTV, since local sports is definitely a good selling point.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Since I'm currently in Boston, I doubt any of the watering holes get TWC3.

Thanks for the feedback Wholin-just got tickets for Saturday! I'm excited.
