Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Union faces RPI and Cornell faces Dartmouth. Anything can happen, but who do YOU think got the best deal versus who got the worst deal in this draw?
Remember, there are four teams involved. What was more important in creating these match-ups: a flawed paradigm for selecting playoff match-ups, a prejudiced playoff committee, or did one coach outwit another? With all the predicting, guessing, statistics, and formulas "dumb luck" is not an alternative.

What are you trying to say? That the ECAC should go to the squeakball tournament format?

Nope: That even the officials with the best credentials make mistakes, and it's remotely possible to play the system. That's what I wrote. You suggested squeakballs (?!) but you didn't indicate who, if anyone, got the short stick in the next round of the ECAC playoffs. I still would like to know your opinion about these match-ups, in case you have one, and your conclusions about the equity of the scheduling.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Its going to be a good series.....I don't think you guys are going to have much trouble with the Big Green. Just don't coast and not take it seriously and you should be rested and ready in AC.

Keith.
I know, we lucked out. Everyone at eLynah was praying not to get RPI or Clarkson next weekend and we got our wish.

I still don't understand your point, Bear Red. I don't see how there's any sort of short stick at all. The lowest seed plays the highest seed, the next lowest plays the next highest, and so on. Seeding is determined based upon your positioning after the regular season. It's about as objective and fair as you can get. Doesn't sound like any subjectivity to me, and I don't see where you're trying to claim a short stick.

I don't think Union if given it's choice, would have opted for RPI, but my first option would probably have been Clarkson. U has absolutely dominated them over the past few seasons. RPI's last two weekends alone prove that they will be a very tough out and it is certainly not the same team that Union faced just a couple of months ago.

I agree with this and don't have any gripe with the system. Union had a chance of playing one of the bottom 5 teams in the league and they got RPI.. so be it. If U is going to win the tournament they are going to have to beat good teams and I expect this will be a stern test. Also have to be careful what you wish for.. last year Colgate looked like an easy team to beat and we all know what happened.. By all accounts Dartmouth's goalie played very well over the weekend, so don't count your chickens too fast

Unfortunately, there was no way we would have gotten Clarkson. If CCT had won, then the lowest seed would have been Dartmouth and we would have played them and CCT would have gone to Cornell.....

I agree. RPI has played very well, and I appreciate SA's comments to the media about this match-up. He is smart to keep all of the motivational comments within the locker room. I think Game 1 will be very telling. IF RPI takes it, then I feel like the Garnet will be gripping the sticks a little too tightly since there is a lot riding on this series for the program.....However, if RPI can't stay out of the box, this might be a short series and I think they know that. In the three games we have played them, we have 5 PP goals. Also, when RPI has the PP, we have 2 shorties,so RPI needs to be wary of special teams play. Plus, there seems to be a undercurrent of bias against RPI in the officiating core. Whether it is real or just imagined, this might affect how aggressive RPI plays. I know that what tickets are left for Game 1 and 2 are SRO ducats, so Messa should be crazy. RPI will have their fair share of supporters, but the Messa crowd can be the 6th man if opponents aren't careful.

I wish both teams good luck and to play hard. I would hate to see anyone injured and I hope the nastiness stays on the Internet and doesn't get out of hand on the ice.

Keith.

I noticed Friday and Saturday's games are down to standing room only already. Call 518-388-6020 for tickets.

Let's see;
  • Union won all three games with RPI this season, outscoring them 15-4
  • Union has been ranked in the top 10 nationally virtually the entire season
  • RPI has won just 12 of 37 games this season
  • Union has a good offense and a very potent power play and RPI is averaging fewer than 2 goals per game
  • Union has the best team defense and the best goalie, statistically, in the league
Union is 16-4-4 against RPI in the past several years

I'm glad the Union faithfull are wary of this RPI team, but I doubt that the Union team fears RPI.

Yeah, Messa is going to be at its best / worst. BTW, I think it may have been mentioned already, but all of the games will be broadcast on TW-3, which of course also means that they will run long with TV TOs, etc.

According to collegehockeystats.net, RPI is averaging exactly 2 goals per game. Not to mention, they actually have a defence now. ;)

Speaking of running long, I wouldn't mind seeing another 5 OT game as long as Union wins it. Who doesn't like live playoff hockey past midnight? I still have my ticket stub from that Quinnipiac game as well as a game-used puck from it that deflected over the glass.

Four of the longest 10 overtime games have involved a capital district team, and every single time, the CD team blew it.

If it happens to go that long, at least that streak would end. ;)

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Worked out well against #12 Colgate last year, didn't it?

Which is why I think this year's Union team will be sure to respect its opponent a little more. Not that they didn't respect Colgate, but perhaps they relaxed a bit in the 3rd period of Game 2 and let things get out of hand. I'm confident that Rick Bennett will do everything in his power to not let that happen this time.

As for Jasma's numbers, they are undeniable. But numbers didn't exactly help Union against Colgate last year and they rarely mean anything when it comes to the ECAC playoffs.

I'm telling all of you right now - take the numbers and throw them out the window...literally. Watching this league for over 20 years has taught me one thing - nothing goes to form in the playoffs. Only once since the current format was adopted has all four higher seeds won in the first round. I can only remember 1 or 2 other times when the 1-4 seeds advanced to Albany/AC.

Side note: Now that we have an Albany-area team guaranteed to be in the semifinals and Cornell favored to advance, maybe Mr. Hagwell should take notice about the location of the championships. :p

Or maybe he'll just see the attendance numbers and say, "See guys, I told you this was a great idea!"
