"Lipstick on a pig" - gotta admit that one made me laugh. At least the author highlighted some of the flaws of the rink.

Pretty positive review. Lipstick on a pig? That was a bit harsh. I apologize.

David Sanderson, a Union alum, posted this comment on that blog:

Thanks for the article on Messa Rink and revealing a little Union hockey history. I was there when we built the rink in 1975 and was on a committee to input on the design. By way of disclosure I graduated in 1976 and was Captain of the club hockey team in 1974/75(and playing briefly on the first team 75/76) when Ned Harkness was hired and the program was started again. You are correct in your assessment of the rink and its structure issues. However, you have to remember in 1975 no one at Union had any idea about hockey except for Ned and Dr Bonner ( Union College President). In fact, the rink's original design was only for approx 1,000 people and did not have a major scoreboard nor press box.
Ned and I had to fight for it be built to handle Div 1 hockey. Also, Mr. Achilles insisted on having a curling rink in the basement which was part of the original building. Well there are many other stories which I am happy to relate at another time. Go Dutchmen!

I remember the curling sheets in the basement. It made for some really cold pregame receptions. It's still more a D-3 than D-1 facility.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Four games left and they've already clinched home ice. Of course, everyone's sights are bigger than that now, but it wasn't long ago that this program was fighting for 8th place on the final weekend.

From the sounds of it, they appeared to take any life out of Dartmouth early and did a good job of finishing. Even after giving up the goal on a turnover, they answered quickly and got the 3-goal lead back. I found it interesting that Bob Gaudet said that this Union team could "win it all".

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Realistically, Union clinched a top 4 last night.. has been very rare in league history that more than 26 points is needed to finish 4th.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Gaudet verbalized what I have been afraid to express myself but which I have been thinking. This team could do a lot of damage in the postseason, of course past playoff shortcomings will have to be made distant history to get anywhere. Clearly there does not seem to be a dominant team nationally at this point so a team that gets on a roll could dare I say it, go all the way or at least, to Tampa. Well the odds may be long but they are a lot better than the Power Ball tickets that I'm holding. :p. It seems that Rick Bennett is pushing all of the right buttons lately. Stevens performed admirably in the past three games, giving Troy a full two weeks to heal. Lineup changes have also been bearing fruit. This is what makes being a fan so much fun. One step at a time though.

Where did you see that quote? I've been looking for it.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Well, well. Cornell holds serve on its game-in-hand, so we have a 1-point race for first with a head-to-head contest remaining. Good luck - I'm just glad *we* don't have to play Cornell and Colgate on the final weekend... ;)

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Cornell beat Yale 4-2 to pull within 1 point of Union. Both teams have 4 games left, including one against each other on Fri 2/24.

Jason Klump tweeted that "Union would also clinch a bye with a point next weekend. Or a non-win by Clarkson and QU."

Hey we'll take another 3 point weekend. :)

Get swept next weekend, and we'll give you the point. :)

Looking at the playoff possibilities (here), It looks like Union pretty much has the tiebreakers against Cornell locked up even if Colgate drops out of the top 4 (we're 0-2 vs. them). Therefore, Cornell must either beat Union outright or get help in order to claim the Cleary Spittoon.

I'm more worried about us getting points in North Country than the RPI-Union home series. There's like an 80% chance that Union will sweep Princeton and Quinnipiac. Bobcats are a bit better but they've had a rough season and it will be difficult for them to pull a W against the Dutchmen on the road.

North Country trip is likely tougher than QU and PU coming to Schenectady, but on the other hand both of the latter gave Union all they could handle in their barns. I have a feeling though that this is going to come down to the final game of the final weekend.
