Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

I feel fortunate to see Union walk away with a tie tonight. Down 4-2 in the second period and (for the most part) struggling mightily in the third... it wasn't looking good until that late goal. Stevens wasn't that great tonight, but he deserves a break. It was only the second time this year he's started back to back games (the other was in early December) so maybe the stamina wasn't all the way there tonight. I'd have to see it again, but I think he was left out to dry on the first goal (which I think came off a turnover). But I could be wrong. In the Friday post-gamer, Bennett hinted that Grosenick's injury wasn't any more serious than Jooris' injury (which kept him out a weekend last month) so maybe Grosenick returns next weekend.

Oddly, the thing I'll remember most about tonight... well, two things.... the crowd (amazing) and the ice maintenance work. I've been going to hockey games all my life, but have never seen someone spray a fire extinguisher on the ice... that was kind of a spectacle of its own.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

That was a great crowd, the game atmosphere was terrific aside from the delay to fix the ice. I had season tickets during the original Ned Harkness seasons and I have never heard Achilles that loud since the night they played #1 UNH before an SRO crowd that came throught a blinding snowstorm to see a Union team made up of only freshmen and sophs (admittedly some in the 22-23 yo range) pull the upset. I let those season tickets go when Ned's program collapsed and now only go when my real team plays there. And sometimes for RPI. But it's great that your program has developed to where it is now. From the first couple rows of section C last night you're team looked extremely fast (possibly part of the reason for all the offsides- the rest was the four Cornell defenders blocking up the blueline) and they do some very creative things with the puck. Very fun team to watch. With play like that, can't imagine anyone beating youthe rest of the regular season. Until Feb 24th, of course.;)

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

3 out of 4 points is ok in my book especially when considering the competition and our no. 1 goalie being sidelined. I actually don't think we played our best in either game. A couple of non game related thoughts. I think the attendance was over 2,000 each night with over 2,500 for Cornell. I'm wondering if the latter is close to a record. Now if only we had a real rink...ok I won't go there again. Except what was the deal with the defective ice Saturday behind the south side goal? Also, I wanted to give a shoutout to the Union band. I think they have improved tremendously this season though I'm sure they could use a few more bodies. It's nice to see and hear them at the games. The new goal chant is also growing on me a bit.

When'd y'all get a band? I remember a half-assed attempt when you played us a few years ago, but this must be something different...

Yeah, there's been a band for most home games. They've even expanded their repertoire somewhat. In terms of sheer volume they can't compete with RPI, Clarkson, Cornell, etc., but they seem to have their hearts in the right place. I don't think they travel however.

OK. Eleven down, only SLU remains.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

The Union band is great... they definitely add to the experience. Officially, there was 2507 on Saturday night and 2018 on Friday... but I sure didn't see 200 empty seats on Friday night. Only saw a few empty seats Friday night, but people were standing behind the goals too.

Monday polls: USCHO - stayed at 11. USA Today - up 1 spot to 11.

Pairwise - tied for 10th.

Looking way ahead, here is the Bracketology Blog from USCHO. http://www.uscho.com/bracketology/2012/02/08/making-a-case-for-attendance-based-switches/
Plenty of speculation there, but what is most noteworthy to me is that only one ECAC team will get to the tournament. That has seemed more likely than not for the past several weeks or longer.

zero chance only 1 gets in, zero chance that many hockey east teams get in

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Maybe with just one game this weekend coach opts to give Grosenick another week off so he can fully recuperate.

I can live with that, but we'd eventually like Grosenick to see some action again soon.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Grosenick is ready to go, I really don't want us to think we have this game in the bag since we beat them big last time. As for other injuries Forgaard has started practicing regularly for the first time in more than a month. Everyone else is healthy as of right now that I know of! Hopefully it can stay this way.
