Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

It's a good thing there's still a few more weeks until the Merrimack, Denver, Colorado College road trips.

I guess there are a few more players out right now other than hatch and bodie. Kyle Bodie is also out I guess for a couple weeks with an injury. Also Troy hasn't practiced this week, he is out sick. Hopefully we can get these guys back before the weekend but more importantly before we hit the tough OOC teams on our schedule.

I know the OOC games are big but first things first. I don't think we should overlook the importance of four big ECAC points at stake this weekend.

This week's Slap Schotts with Ken Schott featuring Jeremy Welsh can be found here.

I'd certainly agree with that too.. after giving away 2 points to Brown and not exactly helping themselves against Yale, I think its more important to get as many points this weekend as possible. And not that I don't care about the OOC games, but playing such highly ranked opponents will help Union's strength of schedule metric in the PWR win, lose or draw. Concerned about all the injuries, especially on the blueline, but at least is sounds like everyone is on the road to recovery.. was worried that MBode had a serious concussion, which hopefully was not the case.

I listened on the podcast and have to say I was quite impressed with young Mr. Welsh. Very well spoken.

I'm going to have to get the PWR for Dummies book.

You guys are hurting worse than we were a few weeks ago. Hopefully it doesn't hurt you as much as it did us.

Schott had a quote from Welsh earlier in the week (from before the Michigan game), where he said that Michigan was "decent" but "not a great team".. words that would certainly be bulletin board material if the Wolverines meet U again. While I don't exactly like these kind of quotes (BTW interesting that Schottsky didn't print it until AFTER the game), I do think it is yet another indicator of how far the psyche of the team and the program has come in the last 4-5 years.. basically from "kind of hoping" they can "compete" with the best teams in the country to now expecting that they can beat anybody they play if they bring their A game.

As for the PWR, I often think you have to BE a dummy to understand it :p. I probably know just enough to be dangerous, but there are factors for strength of schedule (SOS) and even opponents' SOS. This is why you sometimes see teams from the W, CCHA or HE that don't even have winning records ranked in the PWR.. and why it has been tough for AHA and ECAC teams to get any traction. U's SOS should be very high this season, assuming Michigan & UNH get back to their normal winning ways - 7 strong OOC games plus Yale, Cornell, Colgate & Quinny.

Just got an email stating the Jan. 13 game between Union and Harvard will be played at Fenway Park.

That should be a lot of fun. I'll definitely try to make it.

Actually Ken did have video up of the interview where Jeremy made that remark, before the the game. Contextually it didn't sound as provocative on tape as it read in print. Still, as they say, if it's true, it ain't bragging.

I haven't heard or seen anything from the team confirming some of the injuries and illnesses that are thought to be plaguing the team. I guess we will know soon.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Bennett has returned which is good news. This team has a lot of depth so hopefully guys like Yanovitch, Ciampini, and Bennett can take advantage of the opportunity.

I see Gostisbehere on the line chart - do you mean Kyle Bodie? He was speculated as out too. I'd rather see everyone healthy, but I have a lot of faith in guys like Bennett, Stevens, and Ciampini.

Kind of a nondescript effort last night from what I could see, but salvaging a point helped avoid a big disappointment. Considering the depleted lineup it was an ok result IMO. Big opportunities not taken advantage of on PP, especially a fairly long 5 on 3.

Game today v. Princeton is a 4:00 start. Let's get the win. Go U!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Awful collapse by Union this afternoon. The first 2 periods were good but not great with the third being the worst period I can recall Union playing in a long time. The Union team on the ice in the third looked like one of the old Roger Hull era teams, no pressure, completely passive play instead of going for the jugular.

The Carr-Simpson-Zajac line was non-existent, Carr was a minus 3 and one of the forwards that over pursued the empty net leading to the tying goal and he also took a terible penalty in overtime.

As of right now, this team barely looks like a home ice team in the ECAC, let alone a tournament team. I know the injuries were taking a toll but the way the team played in the third was inexcusable. I would assume the last place I would want to be right now is on the bus ride back to Schenectady, it's time for the guys to step it up.
