Union College Dutchwomen 2013-2014

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2013-2014

congrats to the PP squad. scored all five goals against Maine, and I think they did each time in less than 30 seconds!

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2013-2014

Weighing in from the "is the Union coaches job in jeopardy crowd"...

7-12 so far this season and have matched their win total from last year, but continue to pick up their wins only against the bottom teams in each league. They were basically at the same place last season (a little better this year perhaps), but went 0-fer for the rest of the season (1 tie).

They are still a win out of the last playoff spot in the ECAC. The series against RPI in mid January may well be the linchpin of their season. Barcomb's job may very well hang on the next 2 months. If they make the playoffs she almost certainly hangs in. If not and they go 0-fer again the rest of the way, likely gone. In between, anybody's guess.

Also - kind of weird that they have committed players for 2015-2016 but no known commits for 2014-2015. They have 5 seniors on the roster - they are down to 18 including the goalies next season without any new blood. Are you hearing any news about kids for next year - likely Canadiens at this point...?

Union fell 1-0 to #10 Quinnipiac on Saturday:

The score probably would have been much more uneven if not for Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg. She made 35 saves.

Union mustered just 11 shots and none in the third period.

Great to see a big crowd for the RPI at Union game today. RPI pep band also made the trip.

Well, they beat Princeton last weekend and that softens the blow of losing both games to RPI, but still not a great result. They are sitting in 10th now and falling back. Much tougher road to the playoffs with these 2 losses....

Looks like another disappointing season is about to end. Is there any hope for this program?

This is harsh. Union has made some incredible improvements, especially this year. Rome was not built in a day, you cannot seriously expect a team that had 0 conference wins last year to suddenly make playoffs. Granted, Union still finished in last place, but they are not the pushover team that they were last season.

positives:
PP is one of the best in the country. Special teams success is a sign of good coaching. Not to say that the coach is great, but the union PP was a serious force, and you need to give the coaches credit for that.

Wins over playoff teams like dartmouth, Yale and Princeton. This is also something that should be seen as move in the right direction. Perhaps now that Union is more competitive and has the ability to upset playoff teams the coaches will possibly bring in some very strong recruits.

Closer games in general. This is also good to see.

All in all, not to say this season was a success, but imho, Union is much less deep in talent than almost any other team in the ECAC. They are getting a little more deep, and it showed this season. As frustrating as it is to finish in last, keep in mind the program is building, and consistently gets better every year. Also keep in mind that the ECAC is a much stronger division than HE and CHA this year, which means that Union would do better in another division.

Sorry John, but I'm not seeing it. I'm a casual observer, admittedly, but even if progress is being made it's not enough to keep up with the increasing level of competition.

The Clarkson game puts a great cap on the season; this game was the season. The talent is there. The heart is there. Nothing I've seen has convinced me that the the problem is something other than the coaching.

Reminds me of the saying found in the fortune cookie that came with my meal the other day:

"Success comes in cans, not in cannots" ;)

That may be true but I refuse to believe that Claudia is totally to blame. Union is better but your talent level isn't quite there yet. Otherwise you would have made the playoffs. She has them playing hard and giving effort on every shift. Could she improve? Sure but what coach doesn't have room to grow?
