Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Wow.. that was something to watch! I think that's the most complete 60 minutes of hockey I've ever seen a Union team play. U could have had a chair in goal and won that one. The Big Red just don't have the offensive weapons they had last year. I suspect Cornell's pregame talk of revenge led to some of the frustration at the end.. probably won't be a fun practice in Ithaca come Monday.

The team has really gelled in the last couple weekends and seems to be getting great leadership from the upperclassmen, which allows the sophs & frosh to shine. Agree that Gate will be a dangerous team - they have very good speed and play a pretty relentless style, similar to Union's. The boys will need their A game again tomorrow..

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

I'll reiterate what Ken Schott said (even after the game in Ithaca) - Union out-Cornelled Cornell. That is how Cornell has been beating everyone during Mike Schaefer's tenure - get a lead and play stifling defense. Maybe now Mr. Schaefer knows how it feels. :D

The goonery was disappointing. I don't know what Andrew Buote did to Nicholls, but I guess Buote was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I also don't know why Buote was sent to the penalty box when all he was doing was getting hit and having his pads pulled off.

Nevertheless, this is the best I've ever seen Union College look at the D-I level. There are no easy games in this league and since Colgate is on a 2-game winning streak, maybe they've figured something out. Let's hope the boys keep focus and keep playing their game.

Does anyone else agree that the fourth line of Buote and Boileau centered by Pallos is a fourth line in name only? Pallos has been ablaze and Boileau seems rejuvenated since returning from the bleachers. Buote is as tough and gritty as ever. This team can really rollout 4 dangerous lines which creates major matchup problems for the opposition. No let up tonight or there could be a big disappointment. Colgate is playing closer to its preseason expectations and will be very dangerous.

I also wanted to give some props to the fans who have really started to pickup the intensity level along with the team. I have to believe that the great start last night was at least in some measure energized by the boisterousness of the home crowd. It was really loud and there even seemed to be some more organized cheering from the Q Crew. And by the way, I thought the band was actually improved as well and is a welcome addition. They're obviously not as loud as Cornell's or as polished as RPI's for example, but they're on the way.

Each weekend is amazing. Last night's victory was one for the books, only nine shots from a Cornell team. The hockey season is a marathon with high hurdles, the next being a recharged Colgate squad. The Dutchmen will have their hands full. Hopefully, Union's depth will tell the tale.

Most of the chants by the "Q Crew" (I like that one) were good, such as "We're #1!" as soon as the game result was evident. However, while last night was the perfect time for it, we didn't hear "Hey Cornell, it's Friday night and YOU CAN'T SCORE!".

Union held Cornell to nine shots on goal yesterday. Is this some kind of record?

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

OK math majors...it looks to me as if we can can clinch a bye tonight IF U wins and Cornell and Princeton lose. True?

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

No clinching tonight- Cornell won and so did Dartmouth. If Dartmouth lost, we could have clinched as Cornell and Dartmouth play each other and both would have had 22 points with a max of 7 left for both teams (They play to a tie, other wise one wins-gets 8 the other 6 which would leave them with 28, 1 shy) Currently the threshold for clinching is 30 points. No one clinches tonight.

Things will iron out more after tonight, but no clinching until next weekend up north.

I was an engineer not a Math major. I think there is a post about this in the ECAC standings thread.

right on the money! I've been talking about this for a few weeks now with some friends. This is one on the big differences, being able to bring it on with every shift. It's a huge step in the direction we all want this team to go. In watching the tournament over the years, the teams that make it thorough to the frozen 4 always have this complexion. Not only does it make for a relentless attack where the opposition can barely breath, but when one line gets a little cold, another one steps up to pick up the slack.

Agreed that tonight can be a slippery slope as a Clarkson and RPI both found out. Keep it up

GoooooooU

<s>Congratulations on clinching a bye.</s>

Sorry. I spoke too soon. You can still finish in 5th place if it's a 3-way tie between RPI, Dartmouth, and UC.

Is there a team that has as many freshmen contributing as readily as Union? Certainly among the top ten it is unlikely. Furthermore, it seems that the Dutchmen are getting stronger each week. Even weak starts are proving manageable, albeit a tough way to win. Merrimack and Union are the college hockey stories of the year.

The coaching staff have done an excellent job recruiting....even stealing one from the cross town rival who had a goal last night (Jooris). Congrats on another 4 point weekend, enjoy first place and stay hungry!!!

Here's hoping you didn't jinx anything with the North Country trip coming up.

Union needs 1 more point over RPI to clinch that bye. In other words, if RPI loses on Friday, all Union needs is a tie. Does anyone call this the "magic points" like MLB uses the magic number?

Before I forget, thanks for tabulating these numbers, burgie! I look forward to your updates after every game.

Union only needs a tie if RPI wins. If the Engineers tie, that's enough to clinch the bye. slack.net has magic numbers, but I sometimes have difficulty understanding them with the half-points and such. That said, your mileage may vary.

leave it to an engineer...I checked out the link and my head's spinning. Thank God that burgie can/will interpret it for us!
