Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Vech & Foo have both had incredible seasons. In the playoffs we will need a few others to step up and contribute offensively. When we have made a playoff run in the past there was always a few big surprise contributors ie Novak, Hatch, Sullivan. Who will deliver come crunch time.......
This team is resilient and gritty. If Sak can continue to play well and stay healthy I like our chances.
Let's go U !

PS Vech has my vote for Hobey !

Agree on all your points.. Especially with the tighter play (grabbing, hooking etc.) usually encountered in the playoffs
the fancy stuff usually takes a back seat to grinding it out and striking when you have the chance. Go U !!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

You have until 7PM tonight to get your 1st round picks into the ECAC Pick the Playoffs 2017 Contest

In 2014, when we had a lead in the closing minutes of a game, in went both the Captain and Ghost, two first string all-American defensemen backed up by an all-American goalie. Supporting them were some very gritty defensive forwards. We never seem to give up a lead. Against Minnesota in the final, 7 different players scored. We had depth. Novak, Hatch, and Sullivan were playing the best hockey of their career. The games Hatch had against Colgate, Cornell and Providence and Vermont were remarkable. Carr always seemed to be able to play at another level when playoff time arrived going back to when he scored the winning goal against Harvard in the 2012 ECAC championship. He always stepped up his game in the playoffs. I remember when a not so great Colgate team came out of nowhere and knocked us out of the ECAC tournament in 2010-2011 Princeton is hungry and talented. That sophomore line is outstanding and they have some big bodies. We will progress as far as Sak can take us. His 20-4-2 record, his ECAC numbers, especially down the stretch, all bodes well for us. Still, we are not the multidimensional team we were in 2014. I believe the Olympic rink at Lake Placid helps us. We just have to get there.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I'm not as optimistic as others. While Vecchione and Foo have obviously had exceptional years, and the team has exceeded expectations offensively, Union is a poor defensive team - even with Sakellaropoulos playing well.

In fact, Union's Goals Against Average of 2.76 is the highest they've had over the past decade. It's difficult to see them overcoming their below-average defense in the NCAA's.

I'm very sorry to hear you aren't optimistic about a solid team entering the ECAC playoffs with an NCAA bid all locked up.. :-)
I wouldn't say a poor defensive team.. If you can pot 3-4 goals a game consistently then Alex's 2.38 GA is acceptable
Hopefully the extra time off has allowed the injuries on the defense to heal and they can play the top 6 ..

After the Cornell game, the Harvard fans cheered. The Cornell fans cheered and the Union fans seemed to me at least, somewhat subdued. With 5 minutes to go with a one goal lead, we let Cornell score, knowing a trophy was on the line. I think that brought us all back to earth. If we could not rise up and shut down an opponent in those circumstances, when could we? Brings you back to the BU game where which we should have won the game. Defense wins tournaments. I just want to get to Lake Placid. At this point, I am not thinking of the NCAA's.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Forget Lake Placid and the NCAA's the team needs to focus on next Friday night....

Would love to see Vech break one more record !

Unofficial tally of career postseason points:

Carr 26 pts 25 games
Novak 22 pts 26 games
Champ 21 pts 25 games
Sullivan 21 pts 24 games
Bodie 18 pts. 25 games
Vech 17pts. 15 games
Jooris 16 pts 16 games
Ghost 14 pts. 21 games
Hatch 14 pts 25 games

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Looks like Foo our other Hobey candidate has 5 points in 7 career playoff games.

Let's hope he can significantly add to those numbers this year.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

You have to love playoff hockey. Princeton scores with one second left in the third period to tie the game vs Colgate, then goes on to win in OT to extend their series to a third game.
Next Friday Union will either host Yale or Princeton depending on tonight's outcome.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Sorry to see that SA was fired at RPI never like to see anyone lose a job. Will be interesting if Ben Barr ex Union assistant coach & RPI alum
gets a crack at the job. Lots of experience between Union, Providence, Western Michigan & U Mass. Rumor has it that he was involved in the recruiting of many of the key players on the NC team.
Back to playoff hockey at Messa; Princeton is coming in with a ton of momentum Union better be ready to bring their A game for 60 minutes.
Princeton is a tough match up.....
Let's go U !

Many of us know Ben Barr as Nate Leaman's assistant, but whenever I hear his name, I can't help but think of a particular playoff series at Messa.

Even with 4 years still left on Appert's deal, I've been wondering for the past few years how he's been able to keep his job. RPI just kept disappointing over the years - losing home playoff series after a good regular season, having 8-win seasons like this year, etc. By all accounts, he's a wonderful guy and has developed a great relationship with the community in Troy, but his teams kept coming up short. Without looking it up, I think he had one NCAA tournament appearance, one top-4 finish, and no appearances in the ECAC semifinals (Albany, Atlantic City, or Lake Placid) during his tenure. Not that I minded RPI not being successful (:p), but one would have thought his time was up a lot sooner than now.

Princeton is pesky and now can sneak up on you if you're not paying attention. The boys better be ready.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

The hardest thing to do is to end another team's season, especially if they don't want it to end.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Understood! But as a Hobey Baker winner would it look better if the player made more of a impact at the next level thus validating the selection compared someone not winning and excelling at the next level? Again, no question Vecchione is the more deserving candidate...that much is clear.

I beg to differ on your evaluation of the two..1st and foremost what next level are you talking about.. who knows how anyone will play the NEXT level????? Are you the hockey clairvoyant who knows who is going to excel at the next level. If so do you know who wins Natty this year so I can bet on it .

What separate's the 2 players you reference Vechs has been a steady and productive player for 4 season..
Freshman 34 point 1st line center on Natty Team..
sophomore 50 point Hobey Nominee (his linemate -senior Champini went on to top 10)
Junior 30 points fastest to reach 100 points (record) MVP
Senior 58 points and counting broke all time school record for scoring 171 and counting, numerous other records this year.

Foo is having a breakout season but inconsistent in the past and at times too fancy. He should do well and be the man next season with his brother coming in .it will be interesting to see if he stays for his senior year or try and capitalize on this 1 season and jumps ship

All true - but the starting goalie missed how many of those games??? :):)
